Ein MINIMUM an Ausrüstung musste für dieses Bild genügen. Ich hatte beim Wandern um Lorch im Schwäbischen Wald das große Besteck dabei. Leider hatte ich die Speicherkarte zu Hause im Rechner vergessen. Als sich der Hohenstaufen in diesem wunderbaren Licht zeigte, musste das, was in der Hosentasche steckte genügen um dieses Bild aufzunehmen-die Kamera des Handys. Ein Großformat wird es nicht werden. Hübsch ist es allemal.

A MINIMUM of equipment had to be sufficient for this picture. I had the large camera bag with me while hiking around Lorch in the Swabian Forest. Unfortunately, I had forgotten the memory card in the computer. When the Hohenstaufen showed up in this wonderful light, I had to be ok with what was in my pocket to take this picture- the camera of my mobile. It will not become a large format. Yet I find it pretty.

We have been super lucky with an amazing start to the Northern Lights season this year. On many occasions the light has been visible with the naked eye, and has been present in the night sky for extended periods. This photo was taken at Liseleje which is located on the northern cost of Sjaelland in Denmark, a small coastal town with minimum light pollution.

We watched a tutorial on how to shoot macro on dull grey winter days when there is not much color or light to photograph. It is so hard to motivate yourself to go out to shoot anything when even the snow has melted. The video suggested to try capturing dead flowers and leaves or frozen rain drops. So we went for a walk in the park to look for both. I was surprised by what we found just by looking with a new perspective. We did have to search diligently. No epic images but it was a great exercise in composition when you don’t have much to work with. Plus, it was great to be in the woods. Hang in there everyone!

I’ve developed a fondness for a particular spot on the shores of Loch Leven to photograph sunsets. I’ve been there so many times now that I’m sure my Flickr feed is going to become even more repetitive. I’ve found that the local wildlife is also pretty accustomed to visitors to that spot and arriving with a few slices of bread brings in a multitude of interesting subjects. This is one of my favourites a very handsome young swan who is friendly enough to eat out of your hand. Not that getting that close is any good for photographs because he gets inside the minimum focus distance, however, throw some food out a few yards from the shore and he’ll pose for ages.

In den Jahren zwischen 1997 und 2000 verschwanden fast alle bis dahin noch fast vollständig grünen Stuttgarter/Kornwestheimer Loks der Baureihe 150 (u.a. 150 148-150 194) von der Bildfläche. Zum einen, weil sie nach Fristablauf in den verkehrsroten Farbtopf fielen, oder zum anderen der endgültigen Abstellung zum Opfer fielen. Im Jahr 2000 war der Bestand attraktiver "Fuffzger" bereits auf ein Minimum gesunken. Die Einsätze der letzten Exemplare wurden minutiös verfolgt. Auch der 150 191 drohte im Sommer 2000 der Fristablauf (im August 2000). Irgendwann passten dann meine Zeit und eine fotogene Leistung der Lok bei passendem Wetter doch nochmal zusammen. So stand ich am 22. Juli 2000 bei Eutingen im Gäu parat, um die grüne Wuchtbrumme vor dem TC 44240 (Singen - Kornwestheim) abzulichten. Wenige Wochen später, am 20. August 2000 wurde sie als eine der letzten grünen 150er der jüngsten Bauserie z-gestellt und schon bald darauf bei Bender in Opladen zerlegt ...

Scientific Name: Malurus splendens

Description: The breeding plumage of the male is predominantly blue, varying from cobalt-blue in the east of its range to violet-blue in the west.It has black bands at the base of the tail (absent in the violet-blue birds), across the breast and from the beak, through the eyes to join a band across the back of its neck. Its crown and cheek patches are paler blue. Wings and long tail are brown with a blue wash. His beak is black and his legs and feet are brown-grey. In non-breeding plumage, called eclipse, he is very similar to the female, being pale brown above and buff to white underneath although he retains the blue wash on wings and tail. The female does not have the blue wash on her wings, but does have a reddish-tan line from beak to eye that extends into a ring around her eye. Her beak is reddish-tan.

Similar species: The male in breeding plumage is quite distinct but in eclipse he is similar to the males of other fairy-wrens in eclipse. A faint wash of blue on male wings during eclipse distinguishes this species from others. The female is similar to females of other fairy-wren species, but has a bluer tail than most.

Distribution: These birds are widely distributed across Australia in two areas. One area is from about Shark Bay south through WA, through SA except the coast to about the Flinders Ranges and the southern and central parts of NT. The eastern area include SA from the Flinders Ranges, the far north-western tip of Vic, NSW east to about Moree and Balranald and south central Qld.

Habitat: These birds live in arid to semi-arid areas, in mostly dense shrublands or woodlands of acacia, and mallee eucalypt with dense shrubs.

Seasonal movements: These birds are mostly sedentary, defending a territory all year, but the younger females may disperse to another territory. In some areas they are semi-nomadic, depending on local conditions.

Feeding: Like most of the fairy-wrens, Splendid Fairy-wrens eat mostly insects and forage on both the ground and in shrubs. They live in groups which forage together.

Breeding: The Splendid Fairy-wren female builds an oval domed nest of dry grass, strips of bark and rootlets, with an entrance two thirds of the way up one side. The female is the only member of the group to incubate the eggs, but all members of the group feed the chicks.

Calls: A rapid series of slightly metallic, high-pitched pips that blend into an "undulating" call.

Minimum Size: 12cm

Maximum Size: 14cm

Average size: 13cm

Average weight: 9g

Breeding season: mostly September-December, but can extend from August to April

Clutch Size: 2 to 4, mostly 3

Incubation: 15 days

Nestling Period: 11 days

Eastern Great Egret

Scientific Name: Ardea modesta

Description: The Great Egret's overall plumage is white, and, for most of the year, when not breeding, the bill and facial skin are yellow. The feet are dark olive-grey or sooty black, as are the legs. During the breeding season, the bill turns mostly black and the facial skin becomes green. Also at this time, long hair-like feathers (nuptial plumes) hang across the lower back, and the legs become pinkish-yellow at the top. Young Great Egrets are similar to the adults, but have a blackish tip to the bill.

Similar species: The Great Egret can be confused with other white egrets found in Australia. It can be distinguished by the length of its neck, which is greater than the length of its body (and with a noticeable kink two-thirds of the way up), a dark line extending from the base of the bill to behind the eye and the overall larger size.

Distribution: Great Egrets occur throughout most of the world. They are common throughout Australia, with the exception of the most arid areas.

Habitat: Great Egrets prefer shallow water, particularly when flowing, but may be seen on any watered area, including damp grasslands. Great Egrets can be seen alone or in small flocks, often with other egret species, and roost at night in groups.

Feeding: The Great Egret usually feeds alone. It feeds on molluscs, amphibians, aquatic insects, small reptiles, crustaceans and occasionally other small animals, but fish make up the bulk of its diet. The Great Egret usually hunts in water, wading through the shallows, or standing motionless before stabbing at prey. Birds have also been seen taking prey while in flight.

Breeding: The Great Egret breeds in colonies, and often in association with cormorants, ibises and other egrets. Both sexes construct the nest, which is a large platform of sticks, placed in a tree over the water. The previous years' nest may often be re-used. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young (usually two or three).

Minimum Size: 70cm

Maximum Size: 90cm

Average size: 80cm

Breeding season: October to December in the south; March to May in the north.

Clutch Size: 2 to 6

Incubation: 28 days

Nestling Period: 40 days

Many years ago, I bought the Rokinon 12mm fisheye for one particular photo that it made possible. Since then, I've kept the lens with one more shot in mind: this one. I finally was successful.

I wanted to shoot the North Star from Glacier Point in the winter and have both Half Dome and the lights of Yosemite Valley in the photo. When I composed this shot, I realized that Yosemite Falls (left) and Nevada Falls (right) just fit into the frame too. I put the horizon through the middle of the frame to keep it straight. The fisheye lens projection kepts the star trails circular, whereas a wide rectilinear lens would stretch the star trails into egg shapes.

Getting to Glacier Point in the winter was a major effort, especially since it was snowing on me during the 10-hour snowshoe in and I had to break trail because no one else had recently ventured out there. I camped three nights at Glacier Point and a night at Sentinel Dome, shooting the firefall each evening. This was at least my fourth attempt at the trip. In 2020, there was no snow. In 2019, I flew from Washington DC to California, but the entrances to Yosemite were closed due to extreme snowfall. In 2018, there was no snow.

I guess I can sell the lens now? This is a stack of 20 5-minute exposures at f/4. Normally the A7R3 is pretty noisy during long exposures, but the far-below-freezing ambient temperatures kept thermal noise to a pleasant minimum.
