So, I got totally fed up with endless grey, and snow, and cold. I outfitted my 7-year old granddaughter with one of my point and shoot cameras, and me with my new 100mm 2.8 lens, and off we went to the local conservatory where we could almost walk around without coats.

We happened across this ladybug pair...conversation went like this...

"Do you know what they're doing?" I ask my granddaughter, Arwen.

"Um, mating?" she says, most hesitantly.

"Yep."

"How?"

"Uh, I'm not sure."

"You mean the girl gets on the boy's back?" she asks.

"Uh, no. The boy gets on the girl's back."

"The boy gets on the girl's back?" she echoes incredulously.

"Yep."

"Why?"

"Uh..." I say.

"Oh, I know," Arwen says. "He's hugging her and he's saying, 'please, please pick me to be your boyfriend.'"

"Yep, that'll do it," I say.

LOL!

...or at least the mountains close to you. This was taken at the top of Mt. Mitchell, which, at 6684 ft, is the highest peak in the US east of the Rockies. We're lucky that it's only 2 hours away. We were very lucky to get a clear sunny day as it is shrouded in clouds 80% of the time (according to literature).

This shot was taken at 6578 ft as we couldn't go to the pinnacle due to construction of a new observation platform. It was an amazing thing to be up in the clouds. It felt like we could reach out and touch them! It was lovely and a cool 25 degrees cooler than home a mile up.

I'm still following all of your uploads though but I haven't taken any photo's that I've wanted to share on Flickr. I was even doubting about uploading this one since it's relatively plain, no special mood or light, or anything like that. Just some dragonflies doing it in mid air ;). That special project I'm talking about will take a while and I hope to have it finished by the end of Spring 2014...

For some time, I have wanted to capture a rocket launch from the camera mounted on another airborne rocket. I don’t know why. Maybe because it is difficult, or sounds cool.

I got lucky on Saturday, when a large Nike Smoke (in black here) went screaming up as my rocket was drifting back over the flight line by parachute.

Here you can see the parking area out at Snow Ranch and the launch control area.

I got a number of frame grabs, but the video is a dizzy spin. I wonder if a metal swivel between rocket and parachute could prevent the twirling dance on the return….
