In North Dakota right now, just taking a 30 minute break. Took this picture an hour or so ago in Minnesota around mile marker 90 off I-94 westbound. Heading to Portland Oregon for a Monday delivery. About 8 degrees F, but probably gonna get colder before it gets warmer as I get further West.
This Midwestern salmonfly naiad is an amazing aquatic insect. It lives under rocks or leaf litter in pristine streams with sluggish water flow for two to three years before transforming into an adult during early summer. Even though this immature salmonfly looks ferocious, it only eats detritus such as decaying leaves. Winged adults that can fly around only live for two weeks or so in the summer and do not even feed.
BNSF's Tulsa-to-Madison Yard (TRRA) freight takes the Terminal's High Line in front of St. Louis, MO.
Wheeling 228 had to 'double' the hill from Norwalk to Hartland after pulling a combined train of general freight and stone from Bellevue. This is their second trip to Hartland with the second half of the train consisting of 108 loads of stone. The yellow beanfield in the foreground unmistakably marks the season as the set of 4 motors works hard to drag it all to Hartland. East of Norwalk, OH. 9/5/2020
Ohio Central 4092 leads a short Cambridge Turn into New Concord in perfect early morning light. With these Super-7s rumored to be leaving the roster by the end of the year, I was thrilled to catch one wearing the classic OC colors.

A Chicago & North Western RSD-5 pulls a train of 40 ft. box cars for grain loading (no kidding!) through Northville, South Dakota.
A duo of BNSF Dash 9s in the H2 scheme lead a westbound windmill blade train into Alpha, IL mere moments before sundown.

A field, a storm, and BNSF. A line of severe storms chases down BNSF L CHI104 as it rolls east into Princeville, IL.
Century Saturday surprise: Toledo Peoria & Western C-424 No. 800 sits at the Morristown & Erie shop in Morristown NJ on 10 July 1984. The 1964 vintage Alco, one of two Centuries on the Tip-Up, came east to work on the M&E for many years before retirement, and has since been acquired by the Illinois Rail Museum for preservation.
The second day of Winter delivered the first snowfall of the season, bringing with it the promise of a White Christmas here in the heartland. Wishing all of my Flickr friends a very Merry Christmas and Holiday Season. Many thanks to those of you who visit, comment, fave, and/or award my modest efforts . . .

A dramatic sky for a while today over mostly empty farm land. Although there is some early tilling and fertilizer application taking place, the real busy planting season is still a few weeks away.
Norfolk Southern's Central of New Jersey heritage unit rolls west through Catlin, IL on train 21T. With great lighting and a CN nabbing the diamond at Tolono, this train was a fun chase between Catlin and Cerro Gordo.
“Midwestern Corn Belt”
Last week I was in Iowa visiting family. It was amazing seeing all the beautiful yellow fields of corn. I photographed this 100+ year old barn (partially engulfed with vines) between two corn fields as Orion’s Belt rose over it at about midnight. The bright yellow star directly above the middle of the barn is Betelgeuse. Rigel is the bright blue star to the far right, and Bellatrix is at the top.
I used my new Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 (low coma and super sharp) @ f/2.0, exposing for 4 seconds at ISO 4000. I also used a Tiffen Double Fog 3 filter during half* of the exposure to accentuate the glow of the brightest stars. (You can achieve a similar effect in post with a PS plug-in, called StarSpikes Pro 3, but the Tiffen filter is more accurate, because the glows are the true color of the stars. More information about the filter and the plug-in are on my blog.
As we get closer to Winter, the bright core of the Milky Way sinks further below the horizon for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere. At the same time, we are now being blessed with earlier evening views of Orion and Sirius.
*Full disclosure: Rather than holding the filter in front of the lens during one-half of the exposure, I now shoot two exposures —one with the filter and one without. If the glow is too much for my tastes, I blend the two sky exposure together in PS Layers (aligning the stars), and adjust the opacity of the filtered layer until it looks natural to me. By "natural," I mean the natural star glow that comes from thin clouds or atmospheric humidity.
You can find more info and techniques in my new ebook, Milky Way NightScapes, which gives extensive details on my style of starry night landscape photography. Four chapters cover planning, scouting, forecasting star/landscape alignment, light painting, shooting techniques and post processing. Midwestern folks know about the great north woods. I found these on an abandoned logging trail in Iron County, Wisconsin, USA. Helios KMZ 44.2 58m 2.8 adapted for Nikon F by Retro Foto House.
