Note: the light dipped a little just as the train was passing over the viaduct, and the shot has been corrected in PS by a friend who is far more skilled in that department than me.

Midland Hotel….as shot through the front entrance Portico to Manchester’s Central Library.

Peter Street, Manchester.

The Midland Hotel was designed by Charles Trubshaw and constructed for the Midland Railway Company between 1898 and 1903. This is where Charles Stewart Rolls met with Frederick Henry Royce, the meeting led to the formation of Rolls-Royce Limited in 1904. During the Second World War it was alleged that Adolf Hitler had a keen interest in the hotel as a possible Nazi headquarters in Britain; American intelligence speculated the area around Manchester Town Hall was spared bombing so as not to destroy the hotel which is situated just around the corner.

Last of the photos from my last bike ride through Ascot Eaters and Maylands. This is one oif the old Brick Kilns for the old Midland Brick factory. They are no longer in use but have been preserved for posterity :-)

I shot this image handheld during a very quiet moment on a Saturday evening at Nottingham Midland railway station. I focused on the windows at the far end of the image and allowed the side windows to become progressively out of focus closest to the camera. I was using a 50mm f1.4 lens on my Canon 6D, but for some reason I shot it at f1.8. Nevertheless, I still had a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second, which was more than adequate to obtain a sharp image.

Thanks to the delay caused by a planned meet with an inbound MBTA train I was able to scoot ahead through town in time for this second and final shot of CSXT local B731 seen coming through the turnout from Main 1 to single track here at MP 14.8 on the MBTA Franklin Line, the former New Haven Midland Division. The Readville to Framingham turn job has the standard pair of GP40-2s with 10 cars trailing. Norwood Central is still graced with a tidy little brick suburban station that was built by the NH in 1899.

The rusty track in the foreground is CSXT's now lightly used East Walpole Industrial Track, the two mile long surviving stub of the old New Haven Wrentham Branch that into the 1960s was still a thru route to Valley Falls, RI.

HMCS (Her Majesty's Canadian Ship) Oriole is a tall ship, used by the Royal Canadian Navy for training and public outreach. First built as a private yacht in Toronto, the Oriole was loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War for training purposes. In 1952, the Royal Canadian Navy commissioned the ship, and has used it as a training and outreach platform ever since, making it the longest serving commissioned vessel".

curious city dwellers stand at the foot of Ashman Street as the water levels rise from the Tittabawassee River. The level at this point was about 30', 12' over beginning flood stage. In 1986 the area flooded under 31 days of continual rain and that record level was 33.9'. on Wednesday at 5 pm the river crested at 35.05' setting a new record. the damage and loss along the waterway is catastrophic. This Farmers Market car port roof ended up being half submerged in the water. Wixom lake and Sanford lake no longer exist as their dams failed in the flood. They are now huge mud fields with boats and docks stuck in the mud. They may never return to being lakes unless new dams are built on the Tittabawassee River.
