A little boy get his mid day meal at his school run by the HEalth Workers in Delhi. The "almost expressionless face" of the child, yet speaking eyes attracted me to him instantaneously. What's there in his eyes. Can any one tell me ?

I have stopped shooting poverty. But this was an assignment. I was shooting for a book, which is about the health workers in Delhi, who are working in slums and look after the pregnant mothers, the new born children and also run play schools. So this is not a negative picture. Its about those under-privileged kids who are taken care off and provided some basic education.

Mid-Day meals programme in India is a massive social welfare programme aiming at attracting children in to the educational main stream and also providing them with all the much needed supplementary nutrition to make them healthy and worthy citizens of the country.

In mid 1995, the government of India introduced a centrally sponsored scheme, the national programme of nutritional support to primary education. Under this programme, cooked mid-day meals were to be introduced in all government and government aided primary schools with a view to protect children from hunger, increase school enrollment and attendance and simultaneously improving nutritional levels among children.

Enrolment in primary schools (classes I – V) has steadily increased from 107.1 million in 1995-96, the year in which Mid Day Meal Scheme was introduced, to 130.8 million in 2004-05. Similarly, drop out rate (Primary) is also decreased from 42.07% in 1995-96 to 29.00% in 2004-05.

The government of India has set aside Rs 11,937 crore (USD$ 2400 million approx) for the Mid Day Meal Scheme during 2012-13 financial year. This is the world’s largest school feeding programme, reaching out to almost 150 million children in over 1.2 million schools across the country.

An Indian man wearing a red turban sits cross-legged in a yellow wall recess near the City Palace in Jaipur, India. He uses his bare hands to consume a simple, homemade lunch of naan and bottled water.

Indians typically use their bare hands when eating. Most maintain that it is far easier to consume traditional Indian cuisine like naan and roti by using their hands.

A scene of the children sleeping in the government school after having their mid-day meal. In india millions suffer from hunger and lack of education. Malnutrition is one of the major concern the government is battling. The mid-day meal program comes as a relief for children and pregnant women. In India children go to school to survive the hunger more than for education. There is no fan, no light, no clean water, unkept classrooms, no bathrooms, no transport, no proper care-takers, no good teachers, only the palpable spirit of survival.

The Mid-day Meal Scheme is the popular name for school meal programme in India. It involves provision of lunch free of cost to school-children on all working days. The key objectives of the programme are: protecting children from classroom hunger, increasing school enrolment and attendance and improved socialisation among children of all castes. Here a lady cooks food for about 50 odd school students.
