I've been reading a book entitled The Tangled Tree: A Radical New History of Life, where the author brings to light recent findings that microorganisms outnumber human cells in our bodies by about 10 to 1, but because of their small size, only represent 1% to 3% of our bodies' total mass. They play an important role in our vitality and health. If you are interested in more info: www.nih.gov/.../nih-human-microbiome-project.

It is an ancient, huge oak tree. Planted in 1798 and standing more than 16 meters tall, it has long been one of the most important and well known trees in the gardens.

Called “Turner’s oak” after its species name, and native to Spain, the tree has been growing for hundreds of years.

Yet by the 1980s, the tree looked old and sick. It was no longer growing well and looked like it might eventually die.

Then on the 18th of October in 1987, a huge storm with hurricane-force winds hit the south of England. In total, more than 15 million trees were blown over in about an hour, most of them killed.

Due to its huge branches acting nearly like a sail in the wind., the mighty turner oak was torn out of the ground, before falling back into its hole where its roots were once buried.

In total, Kew gardens lost about 700 trees, which needed to be cut up and transported away so the space could be used for new, living trees. Due to the sheer size of the Turner Oak, it was propped up with steel beams so that it would not collapse onto any visitors, and the garden management staff said they would cut and clear all the smaller trees over the coming months before dealing with the massive oak.

Yet what happened next surprised everyone.

Three years after the storm, once the other trees had been cleared and management were ready to cut up the Turner Oak, they noticed it was healthy. Not just healthy, but revitalised and growing again.

Somehow, this massive tree having had its roots pulled out was now better able to grow than before. In fact, the tree has put in a third of its entire growth since 1987, significantly faster than the 200 years before then.

What had become clear is that when the roots were pulled out, it broke up the soil around the tree, allowing air and water around the roots again. Over decades, visitors to the park walking around the trees had compacted the soil around the trees, preventing water to drain down effectively, but also squeezing out any air or gases in the gaps between soil particles. These gaps are not only important for the tree’s roots to get at gases like oxzgen and nitrogen, but for the whole microbiome and all of the microfauna in the soil to be able to breathe, drink and keep the soil healthy.

The visitors, by compacting the soil around the tree, were unaware that they were slowly killing it.

Each individual step didn’t make a large enough difference to be noticeable. But millions of small steps over decades can together make a huge impact.

From this lesson, new techniques were introduced to aerate the soil by injecting air around the roots of other trees, not only in Kew but in gardens around the world...

Multiple studies have shown that there are genetic factors and gut microbiome factors that can lead to an increased likelihood of obesity. It is not always as simple as 'eat less' or 'exercise more' as there are many other factors at play including eating disorders, mental health issues and disability. We should never judge unless we have walked in someone else's shoes. Obesity is a modern epidemic of which science is still learning so please note that any derogatory comments will be removed. We are all human and we all deserve understanding and care.

Stay safe out there everyone!

Luxury feeling 😊

Enjoying a beautiful morning with my best friend ever and knowing that we can eat and have a good stressfree meal is so important.

I find being aware of how our bodies work extremely interesting.

"If you think about it, we’ve always intuitively known that our brain and our gut were somehow connected – you only have to think about the butterflies you experience when you’re nervous or excited or the sudden dash to the bathroom that you might need to make before a big exam or a performance you’re feeling anxious about. Not to mention the common phrase “go with your gut” when it comes to decision-making. But are gut feelings actually real?

Well, science tells us that our brain, our gut, and our gut microbiome (the community of gut bugs living in our intestine) communicate with each other via the ‘microbiota-gut-brain axis’. This connection allows bi-directional communication, which means your gut talks to your brain and your brain talks to your gut. This all happens through their own biochemical language – messages sent via hormones, nerves and other signalling molecules. Doesn’t it just blow your mind how amazing our bodies are?

Considering this strong connection between our gut and our brain, it’s no wonder we literally feel some of our emotions in our gut, and it explains why those with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) may notice that their symptoms worsen when they’re stressed.

Yet, many of us have become disconnected from the impact that stress and our emotions can have on our physical gut symptoms. When we experience these symptoms, we tend to consider what we are eating but not necessarily how we are eating – and both are important. In fact, our emotional state can radically impact on how we digest our food. For example, eating while we’re upset or rushing around can potentially lead to indigestion and/or bloating, as digestive processes are not prioritised when the body is churning out stress hormones.

On the other hand, it’s difficult to feel happy and content when we’re experiencing digestive problems and challenges with our gut health. Around 90% of the serotonin in our body (the substance that acts as a neurotransmitter in our brain to help us feel happy, calm and content) is made in the gut, which means that if gut health is compromised, serotonin production may also potentially be altered.

The good news is, the power to change our gut health is entirely in our hands. Our gut microbiome (the ecosystem of bacteria in our gut) changes according to what we eat. It really is quite remarkable that the bacteria in our gut can change within a few days as a result of our food choices. What we eat is that powerful!

Our gut bugs love lots of plant foods. Some of the fibres naturally present in plants act as food for our gut bacteria and when the bacteria ferment the fibre, they produce short-chain fatty acids and these nourish the cells that line our gut. However, it is important to remember that the foods that are nourishing for one person may not be nourishing for another. I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve met who have continued to eat certain foods they have been told are “healthy”, despite their body sending them clear messages (often in the form of gut symptoms!) that these foods aren’t right for them.

When we begin to pay more attention to how we feel after we eat, we can learn how to identify our body’s messages and improve our instincts around what’s right for us and what’s not. This includes what we eat and how to take better care of ourselves, but also extends beyond that to having the clarity of mind to make important decisions and the ability to get through our daily tasks without feeling overwhelmed.

So, begin to pay more attention to how you’re left feeling after each meal. It can help to jot down what you’re eating and any symptoms you experience for a couple of weeks to help you identify any common denominators that might better serve to be avoided for a trial period of time*.

* Long-term exclusions are best guided and supported by an experienced nutrition professional to ensure how you eat each day is nutritionally complete."

Tremella mesenterica

I was walking down this path bestrewn with yesteryear's leaves when a little shiny gem caught my attention down on the ground a few steps ahead. It turned out to be this beautiful fungus clinging to a bit of a fragmented twig swept by the wind from up above. The fungus was about half an inch long, a third—high. There lay a handful of other fragments of the same twig near by, and the wood looked clean and flaxen at the fracture points, which suggested a fairly recent event. The presence of the fungus was indicative of the processes of wood decomposition being well-advanced, and it had been only natural for the twig to finally give in and follow the route of all living things...

Over the holidays, Danielle experimented with sourdough, including making & nurturing her own starter. It took a little work to get the starter going but now it's fully active and produces the most wonderful (sour) bread dough imaginable.

The downside of maintaining a sourdough starter is that it takes a little effort every day. The upside is fresh bread every day.

We've been told that sourdough starters develop a personality of their own (thanks to their unique microbiomes) and some people even give them names to reflect said personality. After having binge-watched The Crown over the holidays we've decided to name our starter "Princess Margaret."

Excerpt from rbg.ca:

Anamazon (Limb) by Pamela Rosenkranz

b. 1979, Switzerland

Lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland

In her works, Pamela Rosenkranz investigates transitions from the natural to the artificial, dissolving their distinctiveness with reciprocal copying strategies. Anamazon (Limb) appears in a cacophony of sounds from the Amazon in a seemingly natural environment. Pulsating waves run through the branch as if it were an organ pumping blood through its capillaries while a sticky green fluid oozes from its wounded broken edge. The use of the phosphorous green (derived from the RGB color model) as well as the intertwining of the botanic and the organic lends the branch a futuristic character, and raises a question regarding the larger entity from which this branch or limb originates, and the possibility of chlorocruorin* running through its veins.

Like the microbiome in the human body, whose multi-branched mode of action remains largely unexplored, the myriad connections and interactions of plant and fungal systems in the Amazon, for example, are yet to be fully recognized and described. Anamazon (Limb) appears as an extraction from an ecosystem that can only exist as far as the human imagination can reach.

* Chlorocruorin is a dichroic red-green respiratory protein, chemically similar to hemoglobin, and is only found dissolved in the blood of certain annelids.

Pamela Rosenkranz has had solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Bregenz; Kreuzgang Fraumünster, Zurich; GAMeC, Bergamo; Fondazione Prada, Milan; Kunsthalle Basel; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva; and the Swiss Institute, Venice, among others. She has participated in several major international group exhibitions, including the Okayama Art Summit and the 15th Biennale de Lyon. In 2015, her project Our Product was selected for the Swiss Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale.

Our Universe is beautifully organized and balanced by Nature and each living creature of this system has a particular role. If this role is un-naturally terminated, it will eventually disrupt the balance and our beautiful world will become ugly and full of ecological problems.

Vulture

A vulture is an important part of our ecosystem but unfortunately we people do not like it and is regarded as stinking, vulgar and indecent bird. Whereas it performs a very important role to clean the environment and provide healthy living condition for our habitat. This is because nature has provided them with a powerful digestive system which helps to kill extremely dangerous bacteria which could otherwise spread contagious deceases [1]. These birds clean the remains of dead animals and many other waste materials produced by increasing human population. A single vulture is responsible for consuming many tons of toxic waste during its life and without these birds our world would have been full of stinking carcasses and waste. Just imagine if these birds disappear from our planet how hazardous changes will take place in our environment.

Unfortunately in Pakistan many species of this bird is rapidly dwindling and in some areas of the country they have all together disappeared. The reason being the reckless use of diclofenac drug to cure sick cattle and the content of drug remains in their body even after death.

When the vultures consume carcasses of those cattle the drug enters their body causing kidney failures and ultimately the birds die. The same drug is also used to increase the milk production of milch animals which also results in heart attack and other fatal diseases in humans [2]. Although the drug has been banned for veterinary use, people can still buy and use the same drug available at common medical stores for their cattle.

In the absence of vulture the carcasses of cattle which died because of deadly diseases are consumed by other carnivores such as stray dogs, crows, kites etc. whose digestive system unlike vulture cannot kill the bacteria and eventually the contagious diseases spread out reaching humans.

homemade gnocchi fried in olive oil, chilli powder and turmeric powder flic.kr/p/2r99BNo mixed with cheese sauce

first attempt at gnocchi with thanks to 222LOLA for the suggestion

i should have cut the pieces smaller and more uniform

it tasted ok but next time i'll use a different potato and reduce the flour

i should have used a russet potato.

it's high in starch and low in moisture making gnocchi with a lighter and fluffier texture.

the more water a potato contains, the more flour needed to soak it up, and the more flour added, the denser the gnocchi will become.

my gnocchi was dense for that reason

i'll have another go next week but this time with the russet potato or a potato that has similar properties such as a maris piper :)

cook from scratch

www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001yxkb

Michael Mosley investigates how cooking from scratch can be a simple way to eat healthier and avoid ultra-processed foods, many of which are associated with an increased risk of diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It doesn’t need to be complicated - simple recipes using tinned and frozen foods can be a great way to get started. Michael speaks to Dr Emily Leeming, a nutrition scientist from King's College London, to find out why cooking your own meals can be so beneficial for your gut microbiome, your waistline and your mental health. Meanwhile, our volunteer Richard cooks up a storm!

Because we can! That's why I'm recalling this scene from Santa Cruz in the Galapagos Archipelago.

The islands of the Galapagos are a bit like New Zealand — the land animal population is dominated by reptiles and birds. Mammals are mostly absent. Along the coast, the marine iguanas and lava lizards are most obvious. Up here in the highlands it's hard to miss a 300kg lawn mower.

With a reptilian metabolism, and a vegetarian diet necessitated by being a bit too slow to eat anything else — even here in the warmth of the Equator — these giant tortoises just take it easy. Here's a lifestyle made up of ⅓ eating and ⅔ sleeping. It's just as well plants sit still. The dietary intake of these whoppers is about 35kg/day of prime roughage. We can probably speculate that during the ⅔ phase of their day they are digesting an awful lot of compost!

Without teeth, the mastication process of giant tortoises is rudimentary — a bit of a munch, munch, swallow kind of affair. Again, I can only speculate that the digestion of this salad involves a rich bacterial microbiome and gastroliths — not very efficient, but evidently good enough for a slow and steady lifestyle on the Equator.

Sometimes doing science is as simple as wiping up. NASA astronaut Jack Fisher is seen here using a wet wipe on the surfaces of the European Cupola module of the International Space Station.

Doubling as both Station maintenance and science experiment, Jack collected microbes living on the surfaces of his orbital home for ESA’s Extremophiles experiment. Headed by Dr. Christine-Moissl Eichinger from the Medical University of Graz, Austria, the experiment studies how microbes settle into the harsh environment of space.

Cosmic radiation exposes not only humans but also bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms to cellular stress. A typical stay in microgravity for an astronaut weakens the immune system and causes more health issues, prompting researchers to ask whether the same was happening to microbiomes, or the organisms found in a particular environment, and whether they resist treatment, becoming ‘super bugs.’

Because the Space Station is a closed environment, microbes can only arrive with new crew and cargo. The Station has accumulated a core group of 55 microbes over 20 years of continuous human inhabitants.

Researchers tested these against microbes found in a similar environment on Earth: spacecraft cleanrooms. They found that space-based microbes did not have a higher resistance and were not more stressed than Earth-based ones.

In short, microbes are no more extremophilic – able to survive in uninhabitable environments – in the weightless and radiative environment of space. The results were recently published in a paper in Nature Communications.

Interestingly, researchers found that space-based microbiomes can react negatively to metal surfaces, especially when those surfaces are wet. As they struggle to adapt to their environment, they attack the metal surfaces they find themselves on by corroding them or creating biofilm.

Researchers and crew are monitoring the situation by keeping metal surfaces dry and easily accessible for regular cleaning and sampling.

After all, there is no getting rid of microbes or any need to. They are a fact of human life.

Credits: ESA/NASA

Bacteria are around us and inside us: a teeming ecosystem which, together with viruses and fungi, makes up our microbiome. Made from paper, Rogan Brown’s intricate sculpture imagines what it might be like for us to see such a microbial community close-up: a kaleidoscope of repeating patterns and natural forms. Here, we are invited to wonder at this complex hidden world

Black Pool, one of the largest and most consistently beautiful features in West Thumb Geyser Basin, is 35-40 feet deep. The gorgeous blue water was once so dark it looked black, but changes in the inflow of hot water from underground changed the "microbiome" resulting in wonderful clarity - if you can see past the continuous up-welling of steam.

The silaceous minerals dissolved in the heated water arising from beneath the ground is deposited around the edges of the pool where it forms a necklace of geyserite crust adding to the beauty of the feature.

In a couple of spots in the shallow water at the features rim is cool enough for orange cyanobacteria to proliferate.

European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake captured this photograph of the SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft as it undocked from the International Space Station on May 11, 2016. The spacecraft was released from the station’s robotic arm at 9:19 a.m. EDT. Following a series of departure burns and maneuvers to move beyond the 656-foot (200-meter) “keep out sphere” around the station, Dragon began its return trip to Earth. It is currently scheduled to splashdown in the Pacific Ocean at 2:55 p.m., about 261 miles southwest of Long Beach, California.

The spacecraft will return the final batch of human research samples from former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly’s historic one-year mission. These samples will be analyzed for studies such as Biochemical Profile, Cardio Ox, Fluid Shifts, Microbiome, Salivary Markers and the Twins Study. Additional samples taken on the ground as Kelly continues to support these studies will provide insights relevant for the journey to Mars, as NASA learns more about how the human body adjusts to weightlessness, isolation, radiation and the stress of long-duration spaceflight.

the recipe is simple enough but i still managed to take a wrong turn!

i broke the egg in the breadcrumbs and herbs mixture, realised it was too dry to hold onto the tofu so added another egg to the mix

finally did what i should have done all along and reread the recipe -

one egg to be mixed in a bowl on its own,

then the tofu to be dipped into the beaten egg

followed by rolling the tofu in the breadcrumbs and herb mixture

anyway i wasn't throwing it all away so continued. wrapped as well as i could the breadcrumb mixture around the tofu and then cooked slowly on a low heat in extra virgin olive oil

despite the problems along the way it tasted delicious and would cook again but next time following the recipe! flic.kr/p/2qhCNX8

i added a teaspoon of each of the herbs (and would do that again) and didn't have any parmesan cheese so used grated mature cheddar cheese

Eating Dates Produces Powerful Health Benefits

By Sayer Ji •

Originally posted on GreenMedInfo.com

Since biblical times, dates were believed to possess profound healing properties, but only now is science catching up to confirm our distant ancestors knew exactly what they were talking about.

If you go by the Nutrition Facts panel of an ordinary package of dates, they look more like sugar bombs than a healthy snack. Check this one out:

But are they really as nutritionally vapid as these label claims make them seem?

Not by a long shot.

When we apply the complementary lenses of modern scientific investigation and ancient wisdom, dates begin to look like both a holy- and a super-food of immense value.

Here’s a neat example.

From the Koran to Clinical Trials: Dates for Better Birthing

In the Koran, the central holy book of Islam, Allah instructs the Virgin Mary to consume dates when she gives birth to Jesus.[1] And so, not surprisingly, dates are commonly referred to within the Islamic tradition as beneficial to pregnant women. We might chalk this up as “pre-scientific” magical thinking without basis in medical fact, were it not for a remarkable human clinical study that confirmed their value in pregnancy…

Published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2011 and titled, “The effect of late pregnancy consumption of date fruit on labour and delivery“, researchers set out to investigate the effect of date fruit consumption on labor parameters and birth outcomes. Over the course of 11 months at Jordan University of Science and Technology, two groups of women were enrolled in a prospective study where 69 women consumed six date fruits per day for 4 weeks prior to their estimated date of delivery, versus 45 women who consumed none. These women were matched so there was no significant difference in gestational age, age and parity (the number of times a woman has brought a pregnancy to viable gestational age) between the two groups.

The results of the date intervention were reported as follows:

•Improved Cervical Dilation: “The women who consumed date fruit had significantly higher mean cervical dilatation upon admission compared with the non-date fruit consumers (3.52 cm vs 2.02 cm, p < 0.0005).”

•Less Damage to Membranes: “[The intervention group had] a significantly higher proportion of intact membranes (83% vs 60%, p = 0.007).”

•More Natural (Spontaneous) Labor: “Spontaneous labour occurred in 96% of those who consumed dates, compared with 79% women in the non-date fruit consumers (p = 0.024).”

•Less Drugs Required: “Use of prostin/oxytocin was significantly lower in women who consumed dates (28%), compared with the non-date fruit consumers (47%) (p = 0.036).”

•Shorter Labor: “The mean latent phase of the first stage of labour was shorter in women who consumed date fruit compared with the non-date fruit consumers (510 min vs 906 min, p = 0.044).”

The researchers concluded:

“It is concluded that the consumption of date fruit in the last 4 weeks before labour significantly reduced the need for induction and augmentation of labour, and produced a more favourable, but non-significant, delivery outcome. The results warrant a randomised controlled trial.”[2]

Thanks to research like this we can see how the mythological and scientific ways of understanding now converge and confirm one another. I believe that rather than contradict and/or negate one another, the mythos and logos are beginning to assume a far more productive complementary relationship as we move into a new era of understanding where the profane and sacred are perceived as intimately entwined in our direct experience. The field of nutrition, as you can see, is no exception.

Dates Contain Nourishing Information

Dates, of course, are in the palm tree family, and along with coconut and red palm, are some of the oldest cultivated plants known in the historical record; in fact, they are so old we don’t know where they first originated. They have provided life-sustaining nutrition in regions that are often sparse in edible resources, and are increasingly being researched as a powerful medicinal food that could reduce much suffering in malnourished and disease prone populations, especially in underdeveloped countries.

Even while scientific analysis of dates are beginning to reveal that they are actually densely packed with a wide range of minerals, vitamins, amino acids and fatty acids, it should be emphasized that they are not just sources of energy and material building blocks for our body. We must acknowledge that they are also sources of biologically valuable (perhaps indispensably so) information. We can not analytically decompose a food into the minerals, vitamins, and macronutrients (e.g. lipids, fats, and protein), that we believe are responsible for its nourishing and life-sustaining properties, without losing quite a lot in the process. Foods contain hundreds, if not thousands, of physiologically important biomolecules, together which modulate the expression of thousands of genes in our body, as well as affecting our microbiome. In fact, our microbiome works on the foods we ingest, and together produce an intermediary layer of biomolecules known as the metabolome, many of which may be indispensable to our health.

This is why when we say food is medicine, we are not simply using a metaphor. We now know that food is capable, on a molecular level, of positively modulating a wide range of biological pathways simultaneously, in a manner that drugs simply can not replicate. In fact, I believe food contains an immense, if not infinite, amount of information which our bodies draw from to realize optimal gene expression, especially in times of stress or imbalance. Looking at it granularly, I believe food contains discrete units or packets of gene-regulatory energy and information. This can be inferred by the way curcumin, for instance, which is only one of hundreds of biomolecules found in the spice turmeric, is capable of modulating over 2,000 genes simultaneously within a cancer cell line, with a positive end result. Both the specificity and broadness through which these food compounds are capable of correcting imbalances is simply astounding and speaks to an intelligence within certain plants of particular food and medicinal purpose that can not be exhaustively explained through terms and methods of the reductionistic sciences that still form the backbone of our understanding of conventional nutrition.

So if my theory holds true, and dates, which are a food type (namely, fruit) we co-evolved with for quite some time, are more than just a package of mainly simple carbohydrate (half fructose/half glucose) and mineral quantities of alphabetic vitamins and minerals, but also possess gene-regulatory energy and information, shouldn’t it perform a number of therapeutic effects? Indeed, the research now bears testimony to exactly this fact.

I took the liberty of doing a cursory meta-analysis of the extant research on dates available through the National Library of Medicine’s biomedical database MEDLINE, accessible of course through the google-like search engine pubmed.gov. And to my pleasant surprise the research on dates as a whole (including the fruit, pollen and seed extract) reveals approximately 19 specific beneficial modes of action, and a preventive and/or therapeutic role in about 40 different health conditions.

Consider for a moment that most of the blockbuster drugs on the marketplace only have one therapeutic mode of action and one condition they are approved to treat. Additionally, there are on average 75 adverse health effects for each drug. The fact that it is classified and sold as a food and not a drug should not delude us into thinking it is not as powerful as a pharmaceutical. In fact, it should be clear that foods are actually far more powerful in affecting root cause resolution of health conditions by nourishing us deeply, nutritionally, and again, informationally (literally: to put form into).

To gain greater familiarity with the literature demonstrating the various therapeutic properties of dates, view our Date research page. You will notice that one of the potential therapeutic properties of dates are its beneficial properties in diabetes – which underscores our original point, that if you go by nutrition facts panels alone you are bound to miss out on a number of healthy foods include fruits like dates.

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. she cried (in her anguish): ‘Ah! would that I had died before this! would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!’ But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): ‘Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee; And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree; it will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee.'”
