Rame Head is situated in the far south-east of Cornwall and separates Plymouth Sound and Cawsand Bay from Whitsand Bay. On the top of Rame Head are the ruins of St Michael's Chapel, which was licensed for mass in 1397. It is on the site of a much earlier Celtic hermitage. As early as 1486 Plymouth was paying a watchman at Rame to maintain a beacon there to warn shipping and to bring news to Plymouth of important ships.

Thought I'd throw another one in of this place while I'm at it... really can't promise there won't be more, once the guilt subsides!

Just love the view from this spot, where the 'Red River' at Marazion, near Penzance in Cornwall, flows from the nearby marsh nature reserve, across the beach.

Out in the bay, the historic jewel of St Michael's Mount, regularly draws thousands of visitors every year.

As you walk along the beach, you can't help but appreciate its beauty and setting.

A lot of compositional elements come together at this viewpoint!

What a fabulous way to start the day! An early rise and dash to St. Michael's Mount with almost perfect weather conditions... fast moving billowing clouds with enough clearance to allow the early morning sun to catch the side of the island as well as lending some colour to the clouds.

This is taken from the classic location on the causeway giving a great lead-in line towards the island itself. As you can probably guess from the speed of the clouds it was rather windy and one of the togs next to me almost had his camera taken by the wind, luckily his quick reactions saved him an expensive morning!

Here's a closer look at St Michael's Church and some information too!

The oldest remaining parts of St Michael’s church date from around 1200. It is the only remaining church within the old town walls. In the 16th century it was referred to as tanquam matrici ecclesie (mother church). After a period of decline when the fabric had become unsafe, the south aisle was rebuilt in 1748. From 1841 the Rectors embraced Anglo-Catholicism and this influence is seen in the remodelling and redecoration of the church which followed and included the addition of a chancel in 1878 and stained glass windows by Henry Holiday in the 1880s.

The modern period is represented by the sculpture of St Michael the Archangel on the tower which dates from 1976 and the east window from 1987.

Here is a shot of St Michael's Mount Harbour in Cornwall taken earlier this year.

St, Michael's Mount, Cornwall

St Michael's Mount (Cornish: Karrek Loos yn Koos, meaning "hoar rock in woodland" is a tidal island in Mount's Bay near Penzance, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The island is a civil parish and is linked to the town of Marazion by a causeway of granite setts, passable (as is the beach) between mid-tide and low water. It is managed by the National Trust, and the castle and chapel have been the home of the St Aubyn family since around 1650.

St Michael's Church Brynford

From the harbour at Mousehole in the far south-west of Cornwall you can see right across Mounts Bay to St Michael's Mount, which is off Marazion. St Michael's Mount features both a castle and a priory. It is considerably smaller than its "twin" - Mont St Michel in Normandy, but is nonetheless most impressive. The church was built on the summit of the island after the Norman invasion when St Michael’s Mount was granted to the Benedictine Abbey of Mont St Michel in France.

The island, which at low tide is connected to the mainland by a causeway, was once a thriving port for the booming tin industry. Around two thousand years ago trading ships sailed into the Mount’s harbour and exported Cornish tin to the rest of Europe. Several hundred years ago this port and that at Mousehole were the most important in this part of Cornwall.

Today we go from the grandeur of the Great Northern Hotel to inner city Dublin with plenty of life and points of interest to ponder. Is that a "Fagins" of urchins on the left foreground? What do you call a group of urchins?

Apart from what to call the gaggle/huddle of "urban youth" on the left, with thanks especially to Niall McAuley, swordscookie, sharon.corbet, pellethepoet, O Mac and others, we learned a lot about Michael's Lane close to Christ Church in Dublin. We learned that this image was likely taken close to the end of the 19th or very early 20th century. When the lane was a particularly poverty stricken area - with between 3 and 4 families to each small house on the lane. The main profession (as seemingly evidenced by what we see hanging around - other than the kids) was that of "clothes broker". A trade also plied on nearby Winetavern St/Michael's Hill.

See the full set of comments for links, images and the 1914 inquiry into the conditions on the lane - published shortly before the area was redeveloped to more closely resemble how it appears today.

St Michael's Institution, Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia

A group of Catholic missionaries arrived in Ipoh in 1912 and began building the school next to the famous Kinta River. They erected a huge school building with unique French structural design.

When WW II broke out, the school was used by the Japanese secret police as their headquarters. After the war, St Michael's Institution served as a public school again.

St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery (Ukrainian: Михайлівський золотоверхий монастир, Mykhaylivs’kyi zolotoverkhyi monastyr) is a functioning monastery in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The monastery is located on the right bank of the Dnieper River on the edge of a bluff northeast of the Saint Sophia Cathedral. The site is located in the historic administrative Uppertown and overlooks the city's historical commercial and merchant quarter, the Podil neighbourhood.

Originally built in the Middle Ages by Sviatopolk II Iziaslavych, the monastery comprises the Cathedral itself, the Refectory of St. John the Divine, built in 1713, the Economic Gates, constructed in 1760 and the monastery's bell tower, which was added circa 1716–1719. The exterior of the structure was rebuilt in the Ukrainian Baroque style in the 18th century while the interior remained in its original Byzantine style. The original cathedral was demolished by the Soviet authorities in the 1930s, but was reconstructed and opened in 1999 following Ukrainian independence in 1991.

Getting on down (and damp) on the causeway to St Michael's Mount, Marazion.

If ever there was a place to be photographed, this is it... to photogenic for its own good!

Wagga Wagga

Regional New South Wales

Australia

St. Michael's Cathedral is a Gothic Revival Style sandstone building built in two parts. The first part was completed in 1887, and stood as the parish church. The second part was finished in 1925, at which time St. Michael's became a Catholic Cathedral.

The city's name, Wagga Wagga comes from the original indigenous inhabitants, the Wiradjuri people. It is thought that the word 'Wagga', means crow. Thus Wagga Wagga , translates into, place of many crows.

Taken at the wrong time of day really, but managed to get a few shots off as the sun went and the storm came in. Easter Sunday at St Michael's Mount.

Mount's Bay, Cornwall, UK

A couple walking along the South West Coast Path stop to admire one of its scenic jewels.

Dominating Mounts Bay near Penzance is St Michael's Mount, linked to the mainland at low tide via a causeway.

Never tire of capturing it's beauty!

Finally I can show the first image from my recent photography workshop; my PC has not been happy recently and finally gave up completely (it was seven-years-old so I guess I can’t complain too much!) so new components have now arrived and I’ve managed to find the time to rebuild and get Lightroom and Photoshop installed, so far the only loss is a couple of weeks of Lightroom updates which is not too bad in the grand scheme of things.

On the day we started in at St. Michael’s Mount and we tried to find some alternative views from this famous location… it was low tide when we arrived which of course meant lots of people walking across the causeway (the natural lead-in line) but scoping out the rock-pools we noticed there was a nice reflection on offer. Most of the pools were too small but venturing a bit further we found this large pool which included some nice seaweed which I decided to use as the foreground interest in my shot.

As the seaweed is so close I merged two shots to get front-to-back focus, one focused on the seaweed, and one focussed on the mount itself, the clear water in the middle making merging the shots quite simple.

The St. Michael’s Church is the largest church in Hamburg. The church has a Latin cross plan with 44 m width, 52 m length and 27 m height.

The 132-meter-high church tower, characteristic steeple dominates the skyline of the city and was considered as an orientation mark for ships sailing on the river Elbe. In 83 meters, the tower platform offers an excellent panoramic view over the city and the harbour.

St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church has the distinction of being the second oldest Polish church in Manitoba.

St Michael's boasts one of the largest churchyards in the UK. Much of it is running wild and in summer it is waist deep in brambles and nettles. And bats.

This is so late, I really shouldn't be posting it in WH now. I went out and photographed on the correct day (and totally forgot just how blooming dark St Michaels is at night!), but what with preparing to travel, I didn't get around to posting. But it's Halloween today so I thought I'd throw it in anyway.
