In Messina, Sicily, there is a church tower with a mechanical carillon dating from 1933. The tower is almost 50 metres high and can be climbed. From the top you have an interesting view of the church square. I took three pictures of a man crossing the square and superimposed them.

The Strait of Messina (Italian: Stretto di Messina; Sicilian: Strittu di Missina) is a narrow strait between the eastern tip of Sicily (Punta del Faro) and the western tip of Calabria (Punta Pezzo) in Southern Italy. It connects the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north with the Ionian Sea to the south, within the central Mediterranean. At its narrowest point, between Torre Faro and Villa San Giovanni, it is 3.1 km (1.9 mi) wide. At the city of Messina, it is 5.1 km (3.2 mi) wide. The strait's maximum depth is about 250 m (820 ft).

The strait has strong tidal currents that create a unique marine ecosystem.[1] The rock in the town of Scilla, Calabria at the north of the strait and a natural whirlpool in the northern portion of the strait have been linked to the Greek legend of Scylla and Charybdis.[2] In some circumstances, the mirage of Fata Morgana can be observed when looking at Sicily from Calabria. With its bottleneck shape, it is also a compulsory point of transit in the migration of many bird species.

In 1957, a 220 kV overhead power line was built across the Strait of Messina. Its pylons are among the highest in the world. This power line has since been replaced by a submarine power cable, but the pylons remain and are protected as historical monuments (see Pylons of Messina).

On July 10, 2024, Estonian athlete Jaan Roose crossed the Strait of Messina on a slackline spanned between the two Messina Pylons. He surpassed the previous longest slackline walk of 2,710 meters and completed a distance of 3,600 meters.

Messina is a harbour city on the island of Sicily. It is located in the northwest of Sicily separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina.

In October of 2016 my wife and I along with good friends visited parts of Italy, Spain, Portugal and France as part of a western Mediterranean cruise aboard the Celebrity Silhouette.

Mostly tour boats and ferries.

RN fleet tender Messina was launched by Richard Dunston Ltd at Thorne, Humberside in 1982 as HMFT Messina A107, one of a quartet of 29m RN fleet tenders of the Manly Class, the others being Manly, Mentor, and Millbrook. She was attached the Royal Marines in Poole as a training vessel before being de-commissioned after a little over a decade of service. There followed a short commercial career before being purchased by the Pride of Bristol Trust in 1994.

Since 1994 she has acted as a community boat. Operated by the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service Old Comrades Association. They provided a means whereby members could use their training and experience to provide a useful service to the local community and charities. Underprivileged and special needs groups were assisted, as were local schools and cadet/scout organisations providing sea going, firefighting, ship and boat handling, first aid and general team building experiences. Also subjects such as the maintenance of the ship were covered. In all it must have been a really useful local asset.

Time has moved on and during the summer of 2022 she moved to the Royal Navy Museum in Hartlepool which was where I came across her as I was taking my lunch break. I had a good chat with the crew who were more than impressed with their recent addition.

The Strait of Messina is the narrow section of water between the eastern tip of Sicily and the southern tip of Calabria in the south of Italy. At its narrowest point, it measures 3.1 km (1.9 miles) in breadth, though near the town of Messina the breadth is some 5.1 km (3.2 miles) and maximum depth is 250 m (830 ft). A natural whirlpool forms in the strait, which has been linked to the legend of Scylla and Charybdis.

A ferry connects Messina on Sicily with the mainland at Villa San Giovanni and Reggio in Calabria. There is also a hydrofoil service from Messina to Reggio.

Its pylons are among the highest in the world. This powerline has since been replaced by a submarine power cable, but the pylons are still there because they are protected as national monuments.

This is the second work carried out in the city (in 1557) by Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, in which the author expresses the powerful creative genius Michelangelo's style.

Neptune, as just risen from the waters, quiet and invincible, brandishing his formidable trident and holding his feet chained to the monster Scylla and Charybdis, is an allegory of the physical and moral strength of the City taming adversity. The original statues of Neptune and Scilla are kept in the Museo Regionale.

The original position of the Fountain of Neptune was in front of the Palazzata on the docks, with their backs to the sea, symbolizing the god Neptune who blesses, with the richness of its sea, the city of Messina. Today, however, the Fountain of Neptune has been moved further north and rotated with the front of the sea, changing the symbology.

In the original position, the Fountain of Neptune was perfectly aligned with the other two works by Montorsoli, the Fountain of Orion and the lighthouse of San Ranieri (the Harbor Lighthouse).

Position: Messina is the capital of the Italian province of Messina. It is city on the island of Sicily, and is located near the northeast corner of Sicily, at the Strait of Messina, opposite Villa San Giovanni on the mainland, has close ties with Reggio Calabria. It connects the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north with the Ionian Sea to the south, within the central Mediterranean.
