An adult Herring Gull seems to be shepherding this juvenile (first year of a four year maturation) in a quest for edibles over Lake Champlain. They are common here in the open-water seasons, perhaps not so much so as the ubiquitous Ring-billed Gull. Gulls fly beautifully, with purpose and verve, and especially when the wind is up expressing the freedom of flight in a way that one imagines brings them joy.

A pair of instructor pilots from VMFAT-101 'Sharpshooters' departs NAF El Centro in a T-34C Turbo Mentor for a mission over the nearby ranges providing 'low safe' observation to student pilots learning to bomb and strafe in the F/A-18.

This aircraft's registration was chosen by US Air Force General Charles Boyd to commemorate his release from captivity (in February 1973, hence 2/73) after seven years as a prisoner of war having been shot down in North Vietnam in 1966.

It really amazes me the generosity of some people. In addition, this whole concept that people on flickr and elsewhere are just ‘internet people’ and not real people.
Sunday I was asked to come down to Orange County to photograph yoga instructor, mentor and blogger Geri once again. Last time the concept was beauty, so we shot her at the Long Beach marina in daylight. This time, she wanted a more rugged, urban look. Beautiful yoga in an urban setting.
I asked Steve Moore and Hector Cruz if they wanted to come along, shoot along, etc. There wasn’t much money involved, but I thought it might be fun.
Not only did they both want to come along (and drive miles to get there) but they allowed me to use their Alien Bees, Cyber Syncs, ring flash, octabox and their entire studio. Plus, they helped with all the lighting, etc. I’m just blown away.
Now the funny thing is that their new studio Moore & Cruz just opened and they are doing some amazing work. Both come from different backgrounds, so when they combine for a portrait shoot, wedding, or just something fun, you better believe they have the equipment, skills and personality to make it happen. Does it sound like I’m giving an endorsement? You betcha. If you’re in the OC or LA area, be sure to look them up.

This was shot at ISO 2500. Almost SOOC. There was an AlienBee 1600 on the left and right, both just using their modeling lamp, in some dark alley in Santa Ana.

In Ohio for a few days. Not my idea of a Spring Break destination, but oh well. This is also SOOC, trying to edit my photos less.
Digital Photo Magazine interviewed me about photographing Istanbul. What a treat to visit Istanbul, but to photograph this great city, too? Wow. Istanbul offers photo opportunities wherever you turn.
What was it about Istanbul that made you want to capture it on camera?
The Ottoman architecture of Istanbul, it’s minarets reaching to the heavens, the colourful spice market, Grand Bazaar presented a vivid image in my mind. Hypothetically, I had been photographing Istanbul even before I arrived. I had seen a myriad of photos while researching my trip and visualized how I would capture the various scenes differently. Once my feet hit the pavement, it seemed as if I had already visited the city, making my task of capturing the city on camera all the more easy. Additionally, having grown up in Tripoli, Libya, re-discovering the Islamic world has been high on my list. Istanbul has been only one stop with regard to this journey.
Istanbul is famous for its beautiful Ottoman architecture, such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and so on; artistically, do you think you did it justice?
Ottoman architecture is brilliant, isn’t it? The style completely captures my imagination, and there is a fairytale magical element I’ve not seen elsewhere. My eye is drawn towards curves, and lines, so Istanbul was ideal for me as a photographer. Hour upon hour I studied Hagia Sophia, Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque), Süleymaniye Mosque, Basilica Cistern following each curve and line.

Krishna is the first Tonner doll I ever bought. He came in damaged, no outfit, and now has typical "age marks" - the vynil chipping off around his shoulder joints. And I love him with all that. Although have Photoshopped the shoulders for a more realistic look.

Born Jan. 24, 1926, in Norwalk (Los Angeles County), Ms. Asawa was the fourth among seven children of immigrant truck farmers whom state law then prohibited from owning land or applying for citizenship.
During childhood, Ms. Asawa did farm work with her family and attended both public school and a "Japanese cultural school," where she learned calligraphy and her parents' native language. Her teachers appreciated her drawing ability.
In 1942, the federal government began to implement the executive order mandating internment of Japanese Americans on the West Coast. Ms. Asawa's father was separated for six years from the rest of her family, who were housed initially in the Santa Anita racetrack stables, and eventually at an internment camp in Rohwer, Ark.
Ms. Asawa continued drawing and learned as she could from older internee artists. She completed high school in the camp and won a scholarship to Milwaukee State Teachers College.
Because of anti-Japanese prejudice, Ms. Asawa was unable to obtain mandatory teaching credentials. She instead entered Black Mountain College in North Carolina, an educational experiment that in its brief life span became a hotbed of artistic innovation. It attracted future luminaries such as Buckminster Fuller, John Cage, Franz Kline, Robert Creeley, Charles Olson and Bauhaus exile Josef Albers who, improbably, acted as Ms. Asawa's mentor.
Ms. Asawa passed away in 2013.

Two young men we encountered on the walk back to the canoes. The older one seemed to be pointing out things to the younger. Wish I could have understood their conversation.
