Member's Choice - Musical Instruments

Had to take out my 30 year old Sitar from the attic and clean it for this macro. One of the melody strings is broken.

Sitar, stringed instrument of the lute family that is popular in India,. Typically measuring about 1.2 metres (4 feet) in length, the sitar has a deep pear-shaped gourd body; a long, wide, hollow wooden neck; both front and side tuning pegs; and 20 arched movable frets. Its strings are metal; there are usually five melody strings, one or two drone strings used to accentuate the rhythm or pulse, and as many as 13 sympathetic strings beneath the frets in the neck that are tuned to the notes of the raga (melodic framework of the performance).

In the 1960s, the use of the sitar in Western popular music, with the instrument appearing on tracks by bands such as The Beatles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones and others.

What you see are the pistons of my shiny trumpet reflected in the lacquered top of my Cuenca guitar, which is an artisan classical Spanish guitar.

I love shiny instruments, so this is really a HMM to me looking at all these beautiful shiny pictures in this great group!

HMM!

Some of my favorite music is classical guitar instrumentals and I have always been fascinated by the speed of the guitarist's fingers and how the strings hum with life. Photographing a guitar was all about light, line, reflection, and motion for me.

I have missed doing Macro Mondays the last couple of weeks! When I saw this theme, I knew I wanted to shoot my mom's piccolo. She is a gifted flutist and plays in the Hill Country Community Band as well as in her own ensemble, The Prevailing Winds. She provided this information about her piccolo... it is very special!

“Roy Seaman and Miles Zentner were the masters of handmade piccolos 30-40 years ago, designing and constructing piccs at the Roy Seaman factory. The original factory was sold to Gemeinhardt (a major flute/piccolo manufacturer); Gemeinhardt still produces a line they call "Roy Seaman piccolos." However, there are a few of the handmade grenadilla wood piccs from the original Roy Seaman factory in circulation, and this is one of them ~ serial #259.”

A piccolo is about 12.5" in length. This image is the center (about 1/4) section of the instrument.
