Within the large gym hall these books had been nicely arranged for us, probably by the last people to explore the place.

This photo shows a detail of the Max Schmidt-Römhild publishing house in Lübeck, Germany. The building’s brick facade features a striking golden inscription: “DEUTSCHLANDS ÄLTESTES VERLAGS- UND DRUCKHAUS SEIT 1579” (Germany’s Oldest Publishing and Printing House since 1579).

The company’s origins trace back to 1579, when Johann Balhorn founded a printing and bookshop business in Lübeck.

Today, Max Schmidt-Römhild Verlag is known for its specialized publications, including medical and scientific journals, as well as regional literature and non-fiction works.

The inscription stands as a testament to more than four centuries of continuous presence in German publishing history.

Yes, I am quite literally digging through piles of medical journals. Must finish assignment.

The 1880 census shows Elizabeth M Sturgis born 1872, Massachusetts and living with her Mother, Emily E Sturgis and siblings at her Grandmother’s, Margaret D Sturgis home in New York. In 1910 she is living at Brooklyn Ward 17, Kings, New York, a Physician along with her two partners Doctors Anna M Garnier and Elizabeth Sweet.
