El Brie es uno de los "reyes del queso" franceses. Se dice que ganó este distintivo durante un concurso de quesos organizado por el estadista francés Talleyrand para amenizar las aburridas negociaciones del Tratado de Viena tras la Batalla de Waterloo en 1815. Los treinta representantes participaron con quesos de sus naciones, pero cuando Talleyrand presentó el Brie de Meaux, la opinión fue unánime y fue declarado el mejor.
