Thank you so very much for your kind and meaningful support. You are all so amazing to me and I appreciate your every gesture of kindness and and encouragement.
Lately I been, I been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby I been, I been prayin' hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Yeah, we'll be counting stars
I see this life
Like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
In my faces flashing signs
Seek it out and ye shall find
The old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
And I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing what we're told
I, feel something so right
Doing the wrong thing
I, feel something so wrong
But doing the right thing
I could lie, could lie, could lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive
A meaningful and beautiful 2021 for all friends on Flickr. May your photographic creativity blossom, and may you all stay safe.
Abstracting anything meaningful to focus on, we are compelled to consider the landscape free from narrative bonds. To imagine what might have been, in the space between reality and dreams. Nothing physical is eternal.
Canon fd 50mm f1.2L @ f1.5 (Zeiss b-speed mod)
This is a lens I bought cheaply due to a damaged and non-working aperture. I'd previously removed the aperture blades and used the lens in some early shots as a fixed f1.2 to nice effect, though decided to add a fixed reuleaux triangle aperture to emulate the look of the early Zeiss b-speed cine lenses used by Stanley Kubrick. I may create a blog about how I did this, as the improvement from f1.2 and against my Canon fd 50mm f1.4 with regards to sharpness, aberrations, optical vignetting, bokeh and transition is quite something.
Some people may find the triangles distracting, but I like it, and Kubrick chose to use the Zeiss stopped down, where he could have used the lens wide open and had circular bokeh. So maybe he liked it too.
Worth noting, the lens focuses perfectly well. I'm deliberately defocusing here with an eye toward abstract art, and look forward to posting more photos taken with it.

Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away with our so-called accomplishments. We spend our lifetimes collecting achievements, earning praise and recognition, and seeking approval – so much so that we lose sight of what is truly meaningful.
If being peaceful and loving are your primary goals, then why not redefine your most meaningful accomplishments as being those that support and measure qualities such as kindness and happiness?
Rather than being consumed exclusively with external accomplishments, try putting more emphasis on what’s really important. When you redefine what it means to achieve a meaningful accomplishment, it helps you to stay on your path.

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
Thank you Annielle Destiny for posing with me and admiring my Short Leash collar

deprived of a richer artistic training, are sent forth inculcated with the belief that they are creative photographers and artists. It is yet a fact that today, as in the past, the most inspiring and provocative works in photography come as much (and probably more) from those who are in the first place artists.

Our last meaningful snow was probably a decade ago but we got hit pretty good overnight. 6 inches of it. By some miracle the power stayed on The stalks poking through the snow are Soybeans.
Brandelhow Jetty, Derwent Water, English Lake District.
It taxes my mind sometimes trying to come up with meaningful titles for photos. I could have gone down the easy route….’Brandelhow Dawn’ or ‘Derwent Dawn’. Bit obvious though. Whilst I mused on the title my mind wandered back to the week I’ve just spent in the Lakes. Middle of a heatwave and the longest day of the year (aka incredibly early starts for sunrise). I had pretty much written off the week and decided to settle for short, cooler, early morning walks and time with the folks. But then there was the small matter of the BBC weather forecast for the following morning, a 4 hour spell of zero wind (how often does that happen?) and containing the magic 4 letter word…mist!
And so it was that 3 AM saw me creeping out of the accommodation with Otterbield Bay as the destination. The intention was to try and yet again shoot the Hawthorn Tree on the headland. It was my fourth attempt, again a bust, there was mist, but far off on the other side of the lake, and no predawn colours. Strange thing is the first time I was here I couldn’t get to the tree due to flooding, but that led to me finding what I consider to be my best photo of 2025 ( www.flickr.com/photos/197684268@N04/55000167169/in/datepo... ). And so it proved again that my failed attempt yielded unexpected results. Realising the hopelessness of the situation I ambled on past Brandelhow Jetty, which I had shot the day before, and looked at compositions in the direction of the head of the lake with Borrowdale in the distance (more on that later). Turning back with thoughts of breakfast the sun, which had till that point been obscured by a blanket of fog, broke through. OMG, the world turned muted warm shades of yellow and orange. Distant Skiddaw and the Saddleback could just be made out. It was one of those ‘glad to be alive’ moments.
I don’t know why but I invested 3 minutes on a long exposure, despite panicking at the time I was going to lose the light. I’m glad I did. But shooting into the sun and the long exposure meant consequences interns of excessive noise. By the time I had de noised the photo some of the detail on the jetty was a bit soft, so I’ve kept the shadows on this structure, which works to my eyes in terms of contrast. The rest of the picture rendered with a lovely mellow softness.
II suspect I may well end up at the end of the year considering this to be, again, one of my best photos, so thank you once again to that damn tree on Otterbield Bay!
And so to the title. Seems like every time I come to the Northern Lakes I get a week of missed opportunities curtesy of ‘bad’ weather, except for just the one day which makes the week in terms of photography. So the title has meaning for me, this was my 1 in 7 lucky morning, and one I won’t forget in a hurry.
I saw several lion cubs (panthera leo) in The Okavango, Botswana, mostly playing with their mothers. This one took time out to give me a pretty meaningful stare.
Generational definitions are most useful when they span a set age range and so allow meaningful comparisons across generations. That is why the generations today each span 15 years with Generation Y (Millennials) born from 1980 to 1994; Generation Z from 1995 to 2009 and Generation Alpha from 2010 to 2024. And so it follows that Generation Beta will be born from 2025 to 2039.

About the same time that English colonists first settled along the American Atlantic seaboard, Russian explorers, trappers, and settlers pushed east into Siberia and in 1639 reached the Pacific Ocean. It wasn't until 75 years later though that Tsar Peter the Great decided to define the geography of the North Pacific. The rapid growth of the fur trade drove Russian expansion into Alaska and down the North American Pacific coast. By the early 1800s, Russian entrepreneurs were exporting an average of 62,000 fur pelts from North America each year.
This is a part of a faithful reconstruction of what I think is the southernmost fort of this Russian expansion, and is of course a Russian orthodox church. There is a cemetery outside the fence to the right. The fort is located on the coast in Sonoma County just north of where I live, and construction started in 1812.
The fur trade died, and the colony switched to agriculture. The number of Russian colonists started to decline over time, and merely 30 years after the establishment of the colony in 1842, the last colonist boarded a ship bound for Sitka. Russians left a California that was then not yet part of the USA, and the Russia they returned to, no longer exists in any meaningful sense. It's really hard to imagine the world at that time.

Instead of complaining all day and night about restrictions (especially in Germany) we should hold on and follow the rules that are most important to fight the pandemic. Let’s find the best opportunities for meaningful work in these exceptional times. Going through the archives and editing overlooked goodies seems to be a good idea.
This is a new panorama from a series of photos I made in summer 2015 at Capanna Regina Margherita at the summit of Signalkuppe. I merged 5 photos which I had not edited before as I took a lot at this wonderful evening. They were taken at late sunset with the sinking sun right between Dent d' Herens and Matterhorn. We can look from Liskamm left with Montblanc behind over Breithorn, Dent d' Herens, Matterhorn, Dent Blanche, Obergabenhorn, Wellenkuppe and Zinalrothorn up to Dufourspitze and Zumsteinspitze which are quite near here at the right side.
I was working with the Leica M and the Zeiss Distagon 1.4/35 ZM. After development in Lightroom the panorama was merged in Photoshop.
One of my favorite places to go photograph birds is at Frank Lake, Alberta. This is where I photographed this scene.
This photo of a Baird's Sandpiper looking at a spent shotgun shell. It was probably a there since the end of the last hunting season.
I posted this now because waterfowl hinting season started this week at this wetland and lake and wetlands.
I am not sure why hunting starts so early here as many of the waterbirds are still having and raising babies.
As well many of the young water birds who are walking around on the banks, are still developing their flight feathers and can not fly.
It baffles me sure they would be allowed to hunt in one of the most important breeding grounds and migration stopovers for so many birds.
But this lake is owned by Ducks Unlimited which is a waterfowl hunting organization that manages wetlands so hunters have a place to find and hunt waterfowl and other birds.
I think the bird flu has decreased the numbers of so species in this area and around the world over the last couple of years.
In my opinion there should be a ban on bird hunting for this fact alone.

Sorry I am really not so much into meaningful or funny titles. Sigh. These are the last photographs of my evening in Brühl.
Japanese gardens were originally designed for Buddhist monks to meditate to attain enlightenment.
The round window of Meigetsu'in facing its garden is probably the most famous window in Japan. It became well-known on SNS for looking typically Zen. It is nicknamed "Satori no Mado (悟りの窓)" meaning "window of enlightenment."
For most of the Japanese including myself, Zen is perceived as something that seems meaningful but actually incomprehensible. The term Zen Mondou (禅問答) or Zen Riddle is often meant for discussions that don't mesh well, are pointless, fruitless, and time-consuming.
It is a Zen principle that enlightenment should be "grok"ed by Furyuu Monji (不立文字) i.e. not being based on the letters (language).

Maybe unfairly put aside due to its lack of possessing a meaningful sun influence, this scene nevertheless stopped me in my tracks when rummaging through past 'failures'. The haunting, mercurial sky does lend an element of considerable atmosphere to an otherwise muted state of affairs. Agonisingly, there is a faint hint of sunrise 'blush' upon the foreground that never really got going afterwards. Perhaps this disappointment had a hand in my initially feelings of "maybe next time".
Just a thought: How often do you see Buachaille Etive Mòr so utterly shunned & discarded away to one side in an image?. . .

I would love to put a meaningful message here but to be completely honest, I found this Shibe in my inventory from ages ago while I was making this and the narrative wrote itself. I believe this was an Epiphany event product several years back when Gacha was a thing, and honestly I couldn't have asked for a better prince!
