Eu, contudo, vos afirmo que nem Salomão, em toda a sua glória, se vestiu como qualquer deles.»Mateus 6:28;29

Week 9: Shadows

"Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day..."

A week late but oh well. Luckily, I have something planned for this week! :)

The pleasure part, the afterthought, the missing stone in the graveyard

The time we have, the task at hand, the love it takes to become a man

The dust at dawn is rained upon, attaches itself to everyone

No one is spared, no one is clean

It travels places you've never been or seen before

-"the night starts here", stars

this song makes me think. forget our fears? what is THAT? how on earth are we to push aside all our anxieties, self doubts, struggles with self esteem, insecurities and innermost fears? matthew 6 is a pretty good reminder to all of us about how, if God feeds the and cares for the birds of the air, how much MORE precious are we to Him? why worry about anything we need? God will provide, what fears do i need to cling to? so go away, college decisions, go away, ib exam anxiety, God will provide the energy, the wisdom, and the discipline needed to do these things for His glory.

[note-this is definitely much easier SAID than DONE.]

happy bokeh wednesday!

We often go on each day and start worrying about little things. Small things that are so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Then, there are days (and weeks and months) where we worry about bigger things- things that consume your thoughts, day and night. Today, remember that Jesus taught us about worry. Of course, that is not as easy as it sounds. When something consumes your mind, it is torture. When you feel burdened, distraught, or even slightly worried about certain things (or things to come), remember that He is the comforter. He lives inside of us who are born-again. And remember, this life is passing. Nothing here will satisfy, no matter how hard we try. He alone satisfies. So put away your worry and thank Him for His grace and mercy on us!

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."

‎Matthew 6 - Giving to the Needy

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Matthew 6:7-15

Our Father . . . (Matthew 6:9)

Has there ever been a more powerful or beloved prayer than the Our Father, the prayer that Jesus himself taught us to say? Yet how easy it can be for this prayer to become just another part of our routine! Let’s take a little time right now to let the words of St. Augustine help us find new life in a very familiar prayer.

“When we pray, Hallowed be thy name, we are counseling ourselves to desire that his name, which is always holy, may be held holy among all people. That is, we are praying that his name would never be treated with disdain or contempt.

“When we pray, Thy kingdom come, which will certainly come whether we want it to or not, we can stir our desire for that kingdom. We can ask that it may come for us personally and that, when it comes, we will be worthy to reign with God in his kingdom.

“When we pray, Give us this day our daily bread, we mean right now, this present moment. ‘Bread’ can signify whatever will be sufficient for us to live today. But it can also refer to the sacrament of the Eucharist, which is our spiritual food here and now that helps us obtain everlasting happiness.

“When we pray, Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, we are advising ourselves both about what we should ask for and what we should do to be worthy to receive it.

“When we pray, Lead us not into temptation, we are encouraging ourselves to look to God for his help so that we don’t find ourselves left to our own inadequate defenses. How easy it is to give in to temptation through self-deception or self-pity!

“Finally, when we pray, Deliver us from evil, we can bring ourselves to reflect on the fact that we are not yet in that blessed condition where we will be free of all evil. This last petition in the Lord’s prayer has such a wide scope, in fact, that a Christian in any trouble can use it to help them deal with whatever pains them or causes them tears. We can even pray it first, or at length, or at the end of our intentions.”

—Adapted from St. Augustine’s Letter to Proba.

“Heavenly Father, let your kingdom come in my heart today!”

"So what does this mean as we pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven?”

“Good news, that’s what!

It means that as we try our best to do God’s will every day, we are aligning ourselves with heaven.

It means that the reality and the rewards of heaven will flow into our lives.

It means that we can experience all the blessings, gifts, and grace that God has stored up for us in heaven—right here, right now!"

Notice if you will? That none of this is about YOU! Not even your Spiritual Life, it's a gift from God. Why? Because you are willing to Seek Jesus for all of YOUR righteousness. Knowing full well, we have NONE of our own. If we have an ounce, it's because Jesus has given us HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS!

Once you've a grasp of that FACT OF LIFE, you can finally relax, where you cease from all your labor, and REST in HIS FINISHED WORK FOR US! JESUS DID IT ALL, THERE IS NOTHING LEFT FOR US TO DO, BUT ACCEPT HIS GIFT OF LIFE EVERLASTING, HIS FORGIVENESS, HIS LOVE, HIS SACRIFICE, HIS DEATH ON THE CROSS, HIS BURIAL, HIS RESURRECTED LIFE IN US, OUR ONLY HOPE OF GLORY! IT'S ALL JESUS, AND NONE OF US!

I MEAN IS THAT GOOD NEWS OR WHAT? FINALLY TO "KNOW" IT'S NOT ABOUT US OR ANYTHING WE ARE EITHER DOING OR NOT DOING IN THE ENERGY OF OUR FLESH! IT'S ALL ABOUT COMING TO FAITH IN HIM AND WHAT HE DID ON OUR BEHAVE. NEVER WORRY ABOUT TOMORROW, THE SAME GOD THAT'S IN YOUR TODAY, WILL BE IN YOUR MORROW ALSO.

THANK YOU JESUS! BELIEVE IT!

Cover design of my second book: my two other books had covers with no photos in them so my friends were wondering why a photographer would publish a book without a photo. So here is one with a photo and on which it is based (see comment below).

"Store up treasures in heaven, ...For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." From Matthew 6:19-23

MEDITATION

"What do you treasure and seek after the most? What do you value above all else? Jesus offers a treasure of incomparable value and worth, but we need healthy eyes - good spiritual vision - to recognize what is the greatest treasure we can possess.

“What is this treasure which Jesus offers so freely and graciously? It is the treasure of God Himself - the source and giver of every good gift and blessing in this life - and a kingdom that will endure forever.

“The treasure of God's kingdom produces unspeakable Joy because it unites us with the source of all Joy and blessings which is God Himself. God offers us the treasure of unending Joy and friendship with Himself and with all who are united with Him in His heavenly kingdom."

“To set one's heart on heavenly treasure is to enter into a deeper and richer life with God Himself. It is only by letting go of false treasure that one can enter into the joy of a heavenly treasure that is immeasurable and worth more than we can give in exchange. Do you seek the treasure which lasts for eternity?”

PRAYER

"Lord Jesus, YOU have the Words of everlasting life. May the light of YOUR Truth free me from the error of sin and deception. Take my heart and fill it with YOUR Love that I may desire YOU alone as my Treasure and my ALL.”

By the time I got back to the tent from taking dawn photos on the beach Petra had already put my sleeping bag away. So, no warming up in it for me. It was ok, I was awake and warm enough anyway, and wanted to make coffee.

We brought our 20 year old $50 Sears tent this time. It zips up completely, so was warmer than our newer $50 Sears tent, which is also wearing out much quicker than the old one. Not a bad campground. Maybe more geared toward RV's. Wouldn't want to be there when it is full. The fire ring at left belongs to the next campsite, so you would be pretty much on top of each other.

Union Station. Subway (Metro) next, so we didn't really need to be in this area, but we wanted to take a look around.

The annual crow migration is in full swing. They move at first light.

Doing a little train watching at Union Station. Probably the best location for it since you aren't on a platform here. Transportation police was right behind me at this point, but didn't bother us. We did later get kicked off the Amtrak platform, which I suppose makes sense now, since that train was going offline and we didn't have Amtrak tickets (we did have return Metrolink tickets).

Stairs are for chumps. You do get kind of tired wandering all over this place. It is big and hilly, so the moving sidewalks are nice options. My dad's knees were on borrowed time. He had both replaced recently.

Staying at Furnace Creek that night, so had time to explore. Found a hike off of Emigrant Canyon Road listed in the Death Valley Hiking book. Not that easy to find, but the book had a good description of where to look. Follows an old road up to a mining camp and mill (Greene, Denner, Drake or something). Seemed to be a short enough hike that the kids could handle it, although it was all gradually uphill on the way there. As you can see, the road has almost been reclaimed.

Getting some use out of the office Christmas present candlestick holders.

Matthew working out who this is

“Therefore I tell you,

do not worry about your life,

what you will eat or drink;

or about your body,

what you will wear.

Is not life more than food,

and the body more than clothes?

Look at the birds of the air;

they do not sow or reap

or store away in barns,

and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Are you not much more valuable than they?

Can any one of you by worrying

add a single hour to your life?

but seek first his kingdom

and his righteousness,

and all these things

will be given to you as well.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The teletubbies roof. Not much blooming.

Their hiding sticks.

Tarantula Hill bench. Jeremy having an apple.

We explored Afton Canyon a little in the morning. The road follows the tracks very closely in places. Meaning, right up next to the ballast. You can see it in this photo in the lower left. Yes, that is a public BLM road, not a railroad company-only road. Would have been a little unnerving if a train had come by (but none did for the rest of the morning).

This is a second bridge not too far from the campground. The road goes under the bridge and then across the creek (Mojave River). We didn't drive too far into the narrow part of the canyon itself since the road is basically in the river bottom in places and we didn't want to get stuck in the mud. Drove back here and let the kids out to play. I went under the bridge to get up on the hill overlooking everything, hoping for a train in good light, but it was quiet. Did get some nice wildflower photos, though. Lots of tadpoles and a few frogs in the river.

Still a spring in their step. After dinner at Spago in Caesar's Palace (Petra read that it was very kid and allergy friendly) and quite a lot of walking. We took the Monte Carlo - Bellagio tram again, which helps a lot, but you still end up walking to find it in the back of the casinos. 9:30pm, so kind of a late night for the kids, but not too bad for Vegas. You often see kids out with their parents at midnight. I did a little bit of slot machine gambling after the kids fell asleep, but I was still in bed before 11pm.

I'm trying to do this thing where I upload just a few representative photos from each day of the trip to give a quick overview of it. They aren't necessarily the best photos. I'll get bogged down in sorting through those later.

I think there was a tantrum involved before this about something or other (gum?). You could tell that they were getting tired.

"So do not worry, saying . . . What shall we wear?"

Been away again. Road trip for Matthew's spring break. Didn't plan an overseas trip in time to get cheap fares, so went with a driving trip instead. Zion, Bryce, Mojave NP and a few state parks along the way. Kids hadn't been to any of those yet and it had been a long time since we had. This is Cathedral Gorge State Park, which we hit while driving back toward home over the course of several days. Beautiful spot, and relatively empty. We were the only ones at this overlook for the entire time we were there, including doing a little interpretive loop trail. Matthew and Petra had taken a trail up from the bottom and Jeremy and I had met them with the car.

Look at the birds in the sky.

They don’t plant or harvest or gather food into barns,

and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

You are more valuable than they are,

aren’t you?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Amgen Tour of California Festival crowds after the end of Stage 8. One side of Thousand Oaks Blvd was for the race and the other had festival and VIP tents (further down). Finish line is the yellow structure over the road way in the distance. The festival was starting to shut down at 4, but we managed to pickup some freebies and samples while we were there.

Bob's Big Boy in Baker for lunch. Petra and Jeremy had breakfast. I had an enormous chili size.

Grandpa was in town for a few days. Having some tv time with the kids here.
