Puree stamper

A potato masher, tater masher, bean masher, pea masher, masher, or crusher is a food preparation utensil used to crush soft food for such dishes as mashed potatoes,[1][2] apple sauce, or refried beans. Potatoes mashed using a potato masher tend to be fluffier and lighter in texture compared to other methods of mashing, because use of the device reduces cell damage to the potato, releasing less starch.[3]

Day 4 of 7 of the black and white food photo challenge. I found this huge mortar and pestle on clearance at Costco earlier this year. I have to admit I haven't used it much but am ready to start spicing things up. Anyone have one? What do you use it for mostly?

There's so much wrong with the internet, but at least there is Mashed Potato Time. American robin, backyard Olympia.

Manze's Pie & Mash shop, Chapel Market, Angel, Islington, London. Opened 1911.

Update July 2019: sadly, this shop has closed forever, after serving pie and mash for 108 years. London pie and mash shops are in sadly in steep decline.

If you would like to know more about Pie and Mash, then I wrote this article about it:

Iced puddle abstract

I popped down to my local river country park, just as the temperatures were creeping above freezing, and pointed my old Nikon D90 with 55-200mm lens at all the frozen puddles along the solid mud track. It was rather therapeutic, though I am sure some of the passing walkers thought I needed therapy myself - 'I make abstracts out of these' I said, and received a polite, somewhat vacant knowing nod in return :-)

Mash presses in one of the more modern areas of the former Molson Coors South Brewhouse, in Burton-apon-Trent. This site closed in early 2018 and is now being stripped out, this area, along with the more modern additions will soon be demolished.

My dad said this was his favourite meal.

These sausages were stabbed before cooking and didn't bang.

Serving sausages with potatoes was first described in The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy by Hannah Glasse in her book of 1747. It was published the following year in America and Ireland.

Can't go wrong - delish

Contre-jour, and probably at F 11. There is a certain drama not just in the sky, but between the two types of energy here - natural and man-made (the sun and electricity produced by power plants). Both we are exposed to and benefitting from. Our mish-mash world.

100x the 2024 Edition - food and drink

First, mash a banana in a bowl.

Most people are horrified by how long I keep bananas. But I think they improve with age, up to a point! The one on the left has definitely reached that point; soft, very sweet, at the apogee of its deliciousness. Ready to be mashed.

THE MASH IS THE BEST:

Make a mash as you usually would. Sprinkle with salt & freshly ground black pepper, add a tablespoonful of dried Greek oregano, throw in a good knob of unsalted butter, fold over, and let melt.

Throw in a dozen or so black Kalamata olive (quartered), a good couple of forks full of capers, and adjust the texture with leftover cooking water. Blend with a serving spoon.

Meanwhile, start sautéeing your veggie 'sausages' — I used 'Meaty Gourmet, Classic BBQ' — in a bit of olive oil, and when they're about 1/4 done, throw in some small onion slices and let brown with the sausages.

When all's done, serve up and enjoy! :-)

The second time I made this I used the grill instead of the oven. Everything is better in the grill!
