Description: A "real-time data translator" machine converted Mariner 4 digital image data into numbers printed on strips of paper. Too anxious to wait for the official processed image, employees from the Voyager Telecommunications Section attached these strips side by side to a display panel and hand colored the numbers like a paint-by-numbers picture. The completed image was framed and presented to JPL director, William Pickering. Mariner 4 was launched on November 28, 1964 and journeyed for 228 days to the Red Planet, providing the first close-range images of Mars and making its first flyby on July 14, 1965. The spacecraft carried a television camera and six other science instruments to study the Martian atmosphere and surface. The 22 photographs taken by Mariner revealed the existence of lunar type craters upon a desert-like surface. After completing its mission, Mariner 4 continued past Mars to the far side of the Sun. On December 20, 1967, all operations of the spacecraft were ended.

“This is man’s first close-up photograph of another planet - - A photographic representation of digital data radioed from Mars by the Mariner IV spacecraft. Mariner photographed Mars beginning at 5:19 p.m. PDT, July 14, 1965, just prior to its closest approach of about 6,000 miles from the planet at 6:01 p.m. This is the first photograph taken by Mariner.
Viewed with the darkness of space at the top of the picture, the direction you are looking is toward the north pole which is out of view beyond the horizon. The general area in view is slightly above the equator and shows the region around a bright area of the planet known as Elysium. The length of the limb (edge of Mars) shown in this photograph is approximately 200 miles. Mariner took the picture from an altitude of about 10,500 miles.
Since this is a raw photograph subject to additional processing for accuracy, the eventual resolution of which the Mariner TV system is capable cannot be determined. The missing lines will be corrected when final data are received from the Deep Space Network stations.”
Upper atmosphere haze, dust or clouds appear to be present above the limb.

“Mariner IV - Picture no. 11. Data block at left, north is at top. Sun is 47 degrees from the zenith, from the north. 5:30:33 p.m. PDT, July 14, 1965. 7800 miles. Area covered: East-West: 170 miles. North-South: 150 miles. 31 degrees south latitude, 197 degrees east longitude. Atlantis, between Mare Sirenum and Mare Cimmerium. (sb)”
"Mariner 4 was the first spacecraft to reach the red planet and take close-up pictures that revealed its ancient, cratered surface. The picture...is the 11th image taken by Mariner 4 during its July 1965 flyby. The center of the Mariner 4 image is dominated by a crater that is about 155 kilometers (96 miles) in diameter and located at 32°S latitude and 164°W longitude. The crater was named "Mariner" in 1967 by the International Astronomical Union in honor of its discovery by Mariner 4."

"This is probably the best picture that our first spacecraft to fly by Mars took."

What appears to be basically the same thing, on a similar Mars map; it however being depicted on a globe:

and this way cool, high-speed contemporary depiction...and they appear to have a LOT of other great views:

Speaking of Mars maps - THIS IS AMAZING - check it out:
July 2015 - a month filled with inspiring milestones of #SpaceExploration.
The 4th anniversary of the final launch of #Atlantis #STS135 on July 8th, which my family and I were able to share with many other @SpaceTweeps in person in Florida.
The 40th anniversary of the #HistoricHandshakeInSpace of American Brigadier General Thomas Stafford and Russian cosmonaut and national hero Alexey Leonov during the #ApolloSoyuzTestProject on July 17th.
The 46th anniversary of the #MoonLanding on July 20th, when 3 men left our #BlueDot and 2 of them took the very first small steps on a "foreign world" ever - in the name of their team of 400.000 behind and of mankind as a whole.
The 50th anniversary of first Mars encounter of #Mariner4 probe, the first robotic visit to Mars on July 14th.
My cherry on the cake was being able to watch the #PlutoFlyby of #NewHorizons on July 14th with my little son (nearly 5 years old now), whose eyes were glued on the livecast and who was jumping with excitement on his little chair, when Alan Stern and his team and many space enthusiasts on our screen were waving their flags and cheering and smiling while witnessing history in the making.
I am thankful to live in times were our boundaries are being pushed constantly and mankind dares to boldly go, where nobody has gone before - together, in global teams.
Being able to share this with our little son since his early months and passing on our love of our beautiful blue marble and everything beyond is a precious gift.
Scrolling through pics of our travel adventures made me aware again, how much I am looking forward to the times, when @LightspeedLeo will be old enough to understand what he and his travelbuddy @PinkLilDragon saw and whom they met together during all our adventures with our growing number of @Spaceholix friends from all around the world and also with so many of our #SpaceHeroes and #ScienceHeroes in person and via social media.
I thank all for passing on the torch of inspiration and dedicate my designs to all involved in these historical events of mankind - taking countless small steps, adding up to giant leaps, culminating in #NewHorizons leaving all our planets behind and passing by #Pluto (which will ALWAYS remain a planet in my heart (dwarf or not ;-) )
And I am excited having again hopped on board of the inspiring @OneEarthMessage @NewHorizonsMessage campaign by #VoyagerGoldenRecord design director and GalaxyGarden designer Jon Lomberg and his lovely wife Sharona and their global team, who are working on sending a message to outer space.
So in the name of all @SPACEHOLIX out there - we are on board together now, ready to be sent to @NewHorizons2015.
( I admit being a tad superstitious with numbers, so I waited for my lucky number 113, as 5 years ago "1+1=became3" ;-) )
This is YOUR final call to send YOUR name or those of YOUR loved ones and may be even YOUR message and #SpeakForEarth.

“Three versions of photo No. 1 of Mars taken by the Mariner IV spacecraft of NASA and Caltech’s JPL, showing the horizon and perhaps some dust clouds high in the atmosphere. The frame on the lower left is the raw picture as received from the spacecraft. The top frame shows the results of intermediate steps of data processing, including contrast enhancement factor of two and fiducial (scale reference) marks removed. The lower right frame is of the picture after preliminary processing. With the data numbers on the left, north is at the top, and the sun is 25 degrees from the zenith from the southeast in the photo. The picture was taken at 5:18:33 p.m. Pacific daylight time, July 14, 1965, from a slant range of 10,500 miles. It covers an area of limb of about 410 miles. From the limb to the edge of the photo is about 800 miles. Location of the picture’s center is 35 north latitude and 172 east longitude. The area is a bright region between Trivium Charontis and Propontus II. Phlegra, a bright region, is on the limb. An orange filter was used. The lower right corner overlaps picture No. 2.”
Man, that’s outstanding…and rare!
At/from, with lots of other great descriptions of Mariner IV images. Might even be worth the malicious persistence/cookies it probably leaves:

Space history, especially WRT Mars, although rather nondescript & disappointingly boring. Little did we know of the boundless spectacular scenery to come - no canals - but still!

My cherry on the cake was being able to watch the #PlutoFlyby of #NewHorizons on July 14th with my little son (nearly 5 years old now), whose eyes were glued on the livecast and who was jumping with excitement on his little chair, when people on the screen were waving their flags and cheering and smiling while witnessing history in the making.
