Man Ray worked in a wide range of media including photography,painting,and sculpture often blurring the boundaries between these practices.Obstruction,an assemblage of sixty-three wood coat hangers,is an example of a type of artwork that Dada artist Marcel Duchamp called a readymade,a term that suggests Man Ray's appropriation and manipulation of preexisting,common objects.The sculpture playfully mimics a chandelier,but as the hangers seemingly divide and multiply,Obstruction quickly evolves into a dense tangle of overlapping forms.Cast shadows serve as distorted,immaterial extensions of its physical presence.Man Ray first created extension in 1920,but the present work belongs to an edition of fifteen reproductions he created in 1961 for an important exhibition of kinetic art.
BNSF C44-9W No. 4600 plays hide-and-seek with the afternoon sun as it pops out of the 350’ long Tunnel 15 before plunging into Tunnel 16 just a few feet ahead, but it won’t be long before it’s racing east across the Tehachapi Valley and cresting the summit.
With containers twisting through several reverse curves, a modernized C44-9W leads a UP intermodal west through Marcel.
BNSF 7076 East with the assistance of four other units shoot exhaust skyward as they claw their way to the summit roughly 12 miles ahead.

Designed by Marcel Breuer and completed in 1966 as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the building is now known as the Met Breuer.
Marcel Breuer was the protégé of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius and a leader of the modern movement. He is also celebrated for his achievements in architecture and furniture, perhaps most notable is the Wassily Chair.
This building, now an annex to the Metropolitan Museum of Art is at 945 Madison Avenue and East 75th Street on the Upper East Side of New York City.
