Metro, Subway, Tube, Underground. Different names for the same thing. Many cities have one and they all have maps so we can use them. Some are schematic, such as the London Underground Map, some are more geographically realistic, like the New York Subway Map, but they are all works of art in their own right. Now what if the cities of the world were linked by a metro system? Well that's what I've done here my with my artistic interpretation of a World Metro Map.
The design leans more towards the realistic style (New York Subway Map) rather than schematic style (London Underground Map). I felt this makes it visually appealing yet still easily recognizable.
The downside of taking the more realistic approach was evident in the dense area of Europe. It was difficult to choose the cities for this region due to the limited space available. Whilst some locations didn't make it to the finished artwork, I feel that the major historic cities of Europe are well represented.
More info about this and where it can be purchased on my blog:
Circa 1960s, published by the Japan Tourist Association. Direct scan
I bought a packet of 1960s tourist ephemera on eBay about a year ago. The graphics and maps are awesome. The text for almost everything is written in Japanese. Most of the items concern sites you can visit on Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan.
London Underground tube map, with all the station names anagrams of the real one.

I went back and forth about whether these boys needed faces or not - maybe not. Still, I like the overall effect. I've never tried anything like this before.
A map of the Paris Métro (subway) system in 1973, when I visited Paris. .
I became quite familiar with the Métro map during my first time in Paris, in May 1960. This map has the new "RER" lines, in orange. This map must be 1973, not visits in 1968 or 1979. There were no RER lines in 1968. The Étoile station at the Arc de Triomphe was renamed Étoile-Charles de Gaulle shortly after de Gaulle's death in 1970. You can see (or imagine) de Gaulle's name in very small print. RER lines were given letters as definitions in 1977, and the letters are not on this map.
Paris Métro lines are defined by their end points. A few of the lines in 1960 have been extended, and had new definitions. I remember line 8 as Charenton-Écoles in 1960, but it went well into the suburbs in 1973;

Working with the Youth Hostel Association we were asked to produce a large wall map that was to be used as part of a campaign to encourage people to explore the Dark and White Peaks.
The map would be simple and would need to depict 6 carefully selected walking, running and cycling routes and the terrain around them.
