A striking 1962/63 depiction of lunar Extravehicular Activity (EVA). One of a series of North American Aviation (NAA) artist’s concepts by the supremely talented Gary Meyer.
Note the extremely wide stance of the Lunar Excursion Module’s (LEM) landing gear. Working for/under contract to NAA, I suppose Mr. Meyer was not as compelled to render Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation’s (GAEC) LEM as faithfully as the NAA’s Command & Service Modules.
I love the look & feel of this…stark, dramatic and sort of haunting. I’ve never seen it before!
I wonder if that’s a lunar sample return container that he’s holding. Also note the Astronaut’s subdued/shadowed face, reminiscent (to me) of the appearance of Aldrin’s in the “flag/flag salute” photos of him on the lunar surface. And finally, the glint off the PLSS antenna…nice touch.
This would’ve been an awesome image as part of some sort of NASA promotional/recruitment poster or publication.

50 years since your team put a man on the moon.
This is one of my father's pictures of the computer at his tracking site on Zanzibar Island 1961. I am so proud of him and even though all the hype is around the astronauts and mission control (well deserved of course), however none of it would have happened without the geniuses that worked the tracking stations for the decade of the 60's as they prepared for the ultimate launch, orbit and journey.
My father worked Zanzibar East Africa, Wallops Island Virginia and Corpus Christi Texas. I was part of his growing family that was moved every few years as NASA used his experience at different sites. He has awards for inventing software that aided in the advancement of the space program.
This months full moon is the pink moon because of the flowers that bloom at spring 🌺 The moon doesn’t actually appear pink to the eye but thought it would be fun to add a pop of colour to it to match the name

Man on the Moon by R.E.M.
‘Now, Andy did you hear about this one?
Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Andy are you goofing on Elvis, hey, baby?
Are we losing touch?’
'Andy' refers to Andy Kaufman, the American performance artist and professional wrestler. He was well known for his pranks and elaborate ruses. When he died in 1984, age 35, some believed him to have faked his own death.
I think the song touches on how the media has led to a culture that encourages us to ‘believe anything we hear’ without necessarily questioning it. In this atmosphere it becomes deliberately difficult to determine what is real and what is fake.
In the modern world it is hard to be an ‘expert’ on everything that affects our lives. I do, however, find it disconcerting how bad the reporting is on the handful of topics I do know something about.
The picture shows one of the new IEP ‘Azuma’ trains. There have been many wild claims from the government about the performance of the train, all of which have proved to be wrong. In the words of the Star Ship Enterprise’s engineer Scotty, ‘ye cannae change the laws of physics!’ Or in Michael Stipe’s words ‘IEP better than an HST, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!’
I chose the duotones of burgundy and blue to represent the current ‘excitement’ in the UK surrounding the change in our passport colour post-Brexit. The latest ‘news’ is that anyone who mocks the change is part of a ‘metropolitan elite’, I think my reply would have to be, '£350 million for the NHS, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah'!
I recently saw an interview with Mike Mills, guitarist with R.E.M. He expressed disappointment at how many of the themes of the album ‘Automatic for the People’ were still just as relevant 25 years on. At the end of the interview Mills did give a positive note in which he likened humanity to Sisyphus rolling his boulder up a hill, two steps forward and one step back. Let us hope that next year is a ‘two steps forward’ year!
