Union Pacific’s MNYRO manifest freight winds its way through Byers Canyon west of Sulphur, Colorado, on October 8, 2015. The scar in the cliff above the BNSF unit indicates a fairly recent rockslide at this location.

Challenging myself as usual. I nearly always have difficulty creating symmetry on these type of rotation shots and tonight was no exception. Happy to be messing around in the conservatory whilst the wind and rain is coming down outside.

On an unusually warm March day in Denver, Union Pacific 7092 and mates lead the eastbound Grand Junction to Denver North Yard manifest through Arvada, Colorado. The units on the long train are configured 3-0-2. Old ties lie along the right-of-way after the passing of last summer's tie gangs. March 4, 2026, 3:44 p.m.
Union Pacific AC4460CW No. 7312 leads a North Platte (Nebraska) bound manifest over the summit at Cajon. The train has a KCS AC44CW as second loco in the consist (No. 4586), and is crossing from Main 2 to Main 3, having joined the BNSF from the UP Palmdale cut-off at Silverwood. 02 March 2023.

The Southern Pacific Transportation Company had just over two months of independence remaining when this lumber drag was climbing the grade to Tunnel 17 near Dorris. It was nice to catch a clean Rio on the point, even if its light package had been lobotomized.
The appearance of DRGW 5354 begs the question of what looked worse - Rio Grande units that received SP-style numberboards with Espee's Roman font, or SP units that received DRGW-style numberboards with the standard Rio Grande gothic font.
In the mid 1800s, the United States of America was growing. The Louisiana purchase of 1803 was secured after the War of 1812 and Florida was purchased from Spain in 1819. The population grew from just 4 million in 1790 to 20 million in 1845. The desire of many in the new nation was to expand westward as it was seen as Americas destiny to rule from sea to shining sea and to expand the Anglo-Saxon American way of life. Some Americans moved into the Mexican territory of Texas where they would soon start a revolt in 1836 and declare their desire to join the U.S., which succeeded in 1845. In the following year, the United States and Great Britain came to an agreement regarding the Oregon country resulting in American claims over the territory south of the 49th parallel being solidified, with the exception of Vancouver island. The Mexicans were outraged by the annexation of Texas, and war between the U.S. and Mexico broke out soon after lasting until 1848. The Mexicans would lose more than half of their territory including California. This would pave the way for further American settlement westwards. However, these territories were home various Native American tribes who previously resisted Spanish and Mexican authority. Unlike the Spanish and the Mexicans, the average American was armed and could mostly fend for themselves against Indian attacks.
The idea of Manifest Destiny was achieved, for now. The United States more than doubled its territory since its founding and was able to consolidate its gains with American settlers in the long term. Many of these settlers and pioneers sought to start a new life, or get rich quick in the California gold rush. Further expansion would resume after the American Civil War of 1861-1865 where the United States would expand beyond continental North America, but that is a story for another day.
For the 250th anniversary of America’s founding, I decided to build something related to the settlers and pioneers who built this country. In my opinion, they don’t get enough credit in modern day America. I’ll likely revisit American westward expansion in the future, so stay tuned.

An eastbound manifest, with a cut of hoppers on the headpin, is on West Hump's board and just clear of Staples DS board. It will be smooth sailing into the cities with no traffic ahead.
At 08:50, UP 2662 leads the M-GJNY (manifest, Grand Junction, Colorado, to North Yard, Denver) at mile 10.25 on the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision in Arvada, Colorado. The train is approaching W 72nd Avenue. The engines are configured 3-0-1. July 11, 2025.
Looking back 10 years to when I shot this, it was a lucky shot in more ways than one. From the look of the sky, it's obvious I caught a sucker hole for good light. Nice to get a decent H1 leader. The matched CP units in the consist were better than a couple trashy dash 9's. And finally if my memory serves this was the first time I shot from this location, and it was probably just a grab and go kind of thing on the way to a meeting somewhere. Last but not least, my (un) trusty Pentax did a decent job here.
The second drone shot of this train, taken on my way to the train show in Fargo. I managed to come home with money left and a couple of photos to boot so it was a decent day.

Une manifestation importante en cette journée de lutte internationale du monde du travail.
A Paris, la présence massive de CRS et gendarmes était oppressante. Sans aucune raison, la manif a été bloquée dès le départ pendant plus d'une heure (alors même qu'en ces temps de covid il est malveillant de confiner des milliers de personnes, venues marcher et non stationner sur un même lieu). La manif a ensuite été a plusieurs reprises interrompue, coupée par la police, alors même qu'il n'y avait aucun signe de "violences" de manifestants. S'il y avait bien une source de violence dans cette manifestation, c'était celle de la police macronienne. et celle d'extrême-droite comme le montre l'attaque dont la CGT a été la cible place de la nation.
