At 3pm I was up in the Old Zoo at Griffith Park. I'd only arrived a short time earlier, and after a whole day photographing in Baldwin Hills and Los Angeles (battling weekday traffic, which takes a lot of time), driving up through Laurel Canyon, and into Griffith Park. I could have taken sunset shots in the Park, but my feet were tired, and my legs were achy.
Could I get down to the South Bay by sunset? Sure, but it was going to be close.
I took the 91 from the 110 and drove west. (The 91 ends and becomes Artesia Blvd when exiting the 110. ) I could physically see the sun dropping lower, against a nice cloudspray.
Hawthorne down to Pt. Vicente? Nah. Too long. I'd be a few miles from the destination when the sun set.
How about Manhattan Beach, straight shot to the 405, a short jog up to Manhattan Beach Blvd.
Monday night approaching sunset on a beautiful day. Sure to be lots of folks around the pier.
There were.
During Christmas (shopping) period, the Beach Cities put neat little red bags over the parking meters, and parking is free, so I just had to find one that wasn't metered at 15 minutes. A two hour spot appeared four blocks from the pier.
The sun was now touching the horizon. I walked as fast as I could, and got to where I wanted to be to get this shot, and some others, right as the sun disappeared, but the sky colors were still glorious.
I had to chuckle when I saw a post on Instagram proclaiming a sunset shot as the "trendy sunset photo of the day."
Well, here's mine.

This is the 2nd of five photos I've processed from my sunset at Manhattan Beach on the 22nd. So far I've been very satisfied with the images from that Photo Expedition. I was going to digitally erase the gal in the shot, but kinda like the human element in this shot as she watches the sunset.
This is a telephoto taken with the lens at 90mm and she's standing on a sand berm. (As am I) There are a lot more folks below her whom you can't see.

I've been decompressing from my Hawaii trip, relaxing, doing chores, and finishing my months long itinerary planning for my 9 day tour of Southern England which is coming up quickly. I leave for London on the 18th!
Haven't done much in the way of photography since I got back from O'ahu on the 10th of February. Here is a shot of the sunset as it looked way down through the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier on the 22nd of January.
Recently I began planning my proposed next trip. (sigh! šš) Hopefully for June. Tennessee: Memphis to Nashville to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. And I also want to squeeze a trip to Disney World in Florida sometime this year! So many places to go, so little time.

Oh its chilly, dark, grey and rainy here today in Sydney and I went looking for shots with warmth to warm me up and to remember that long summer evenings are just around the corner - well around the corner 3 blocks away perhaps ;).
This shot was taken at sunset (which I rarely see on the ocean due to where I live ) on Manhattan Beach on my last night in the US . Thinking about it now, it was actually quite chilly about 20 degrees and windy and all these people were still on the beach swimming and sunbathing - reminded me of growing up in Ireland where we would be running down the beach when it was 18 degrees and windy thinking how lucky we were ;))
Clouds, some fog, lots of water in the air from the wave that just broke created this diffused light effect that I thought is worth sharing... :-) @ El Porto, Manhattan Beach, California
I was talking surfing pics (winter swell at El Porto), but couldn't pass up the opportunity to snap a few shots of these chasing willets... @ El Porto, Manhattan Beach, CA

Sunset at the Manhattan Beach Pier shot with my new wide angle lens.
Getting the lens (finally) a few months after upgrading my camera to the Canon EOS R5 seems to have stoked my photographic "creativity" insomuch as the past few months I haven't been as "lazy" as in the past year waiting for trips to come up before taking slews of pictures.
It still helps of course to have accommodating weather. Some much needed rain is supposedly on the way this weekend, so I'm hoping for amazing cloudscapes to photograph.
You can't really tell from this photo, but earlier when the sun was higher in the sky, some of the clouds were mixed with wind blown smoke from the latest fire, up in Castaic, plus the Palisades fire smoke could still be clearly seen along the horizon.
