Young girl walking by a mausoleum in Manila South Cemetery.

In the Philippines, particularly in densely populated cities like Manila, thousands of impoverished families reside within cemeteries. This phenomenon stems primarily from severe poverty, lack of affordable housing, and internal migration. Many arrive seeking work as grave caretakers, masons, or vendors, eventually building makeshift homes on or within mausoleums. Conditions are often dire, lacking basic sanitation, clean water, and electricity, yet cemeteries offer a semblance of free shelter and livelihood opportunities for those with nowhere else to go.

Large and longer thunder storm over Makati city, but the 2 cranes opposite just carried on working working throughout, I would not like to be the operator on one of those.

In Manila cemeteries, families honor their loved ones by repainting graves—often before Undas, the Day of the Dead. This tradition reflects care, remembrance, and respect. Bright colors or white limewash are used to clean, protect, and personalize tombs, showing the dead are not forgotten. It’s a heartfelt ritual passed down through generations.

Shot on film (fuji C200) with a pentax Mz-7 + DA 50mm, edited in lightroom. I did a digital capture of this image and it was sharper and cleaner, but somehow the film managed to capture more colours.

Night Rain and Dystopia in Futuristic Makati

Why is the future always portrayed as a bleak and dismal dystopia? Perhaps it's because the fear of darkness and chaos appeals to our primal instincts. Yet our hearts yearn for something more beautiful. A city where the warm, golden light illuminates the cobblestone streets, the soft echo of footsteps, and the promise of hidden cafes that invite you to discover their secrets. A place where you can walk hand in hand with your beloved, without a shadow of fear or doubt. A world where love, art, and beauty reign supreme, and where the soul can find shelter from the storms of life.

HAPPY MINIATURE SUNDAY!

Made it to Explore Front Page. Thanks everyone for your visits and wonderful comments.

After going thru some files, I've realized that I have started taking pictures of upcoming storms since January 2006.
