The Mâconnais district is located in the south of the Burgundy wine region in France. It takes its name from the town of Mâcon. The photo shows the view from the Rock of Salutré (Roche de Solutré), a limestone escarpment overlooking the commune of Solutré-Pouilly. Occupied by man for at least 55,000 years, it is also the cradle of the sought-after Pouilly-Fuissé wines. Mâcon was a major crossroads in Roman times, and grapes would have been brought by the Romans if they were not already cultivated by the Celts. The limestone hills are covered in alkaline clay that best suits Chardonnay. In the 1980s French President François Mitterrand started to make ritual ascents of the Rock of Salutré once a year.

My goal with this series is to explore every day scenes under the cover of darkness. A street corner, a lamp post, a doorway. Big city, small town, urban, rural. Early on in the COVER OF NIGHT series, I shot a couple gas stations. They were not initially the type scene I was looking to capture, but when I came across one late at night, bright and isolated in the darkness, it was impossible for me to resist, so I continue to shoot them. I have now shot enough that they have become a series-within-the-series. For a look at them as a collection, check out, Gas Stations
I came across this beautiful old home near Marshallville, Georgia in Macon county. I don't know its history. I was frustrated with trying to shoot it, because at that time of day the sun was always in the shot. No clouds, no shade and the only way to get the front of the house was straight into the sun. To make it worse the wind was blowing, so the HDR is blurred. It gives me a reason to go back one day with better light. The interior series is also on my photostream.
