Macclesfield's town crier did a great job of announcing the various entertainments at the St George's Day celebrations on Sunday :).
There was a definite autumnal feel at Macclesfield's Treacle Market today. Last week it felt like late summer - today the ground is littered with leaves and the pumpkins are carved :)

Yesterday was Macclesfield's Barnaby Parade and the the theme was 'Space'. This model of E.T. attracted some attention... and took me back a few years *cough* to the release of the film and how much I enjoyed it at the time. Lovely to see the same fascination from some younger members of the crowd :)

Had a bit of a play with this one. I was practising my 'shoot-from-the-hip' technique, which usually leads to lots of photographs of people's knees, haha. So I was pleasantly surprised to find this one worked... just about. Light streaming in from the right, the clock tower of St Michael's Church, and a queue of people at the bread van at Macclesfield's Treacle Market.

Steam trains on the line between Kidsgrove and Cheadle Hulme are a rare event and it is many years since the last one passed through Macclesfield. 'The Mancunian' run by the Railway Touring Company was too good to miss and with 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' at the front it is seen heading north alongside the Bollin at Macclesfield's Riverside Park. The line is downhill here and it was a very warm day which meant no exhaust from the locomotive.
Macclesfield on the sort of damp late February evening when you rapidly forget that the last couple of days have been unseasonably warm. The parish church is just visible in the background. On the eve of St David’s Day (March 1st) it is not quite ‘Starless and bible-black’ but I did once see a performance, with live jazz, of Under Milk Wood in the church during Macclesfield's excellent Barnaby Festival. Some images just seem to me to cry out for a black and white treatment.

Entering Macclesfield's former bus station/depot
All that remains of the 1,000 seat Majestic Cinema situated on Macclesfield's main street. The landmark entrance tower is faced with white 'faience' tiles - often associated with art deco style buildings..
There are always a number of photographers at Macclesfield's Treacle Market. I met someone this time around who currently lives in Borneo and earns money from his travel photography! We had a fascinating conversation! It wasn't this guy, although he also seemed very intent on capturing the atmosphere :).

After a week of rain to help 'clean ' it, this week it is the turn of 66204 to get the photoshop treatment to highlight the patina caused by the rain and mud. Still at the north end of the 3J01 diagram, here it is waiting at Macclesfield's platform 3 to head south again; 28th November 2015.

Looking north from Macclesfield signal box as 221128 leads another set with 1M30 0730 Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly on 22nd July 2021.
The new Dorman style signals have already been fitted to the gantry for trains in the Down direction. All the other old style signals under Macclesfield's control will be replaced prior to it closing in September 2021.
A long-term fixture of Macclesfield is the posh furniture store Arighi Bianchi, seen on the right.

One of the coaches visiting Macclesfield on 26 September 2021 was Butler Brothers Coaches, Kirkby in Ashfield M6 BUT, a Caetano bodied Mercedes-Benz O510 Tourino that was new to Robin Hood Coaches, Rudyard in 2006 registered BX06 ULZ.
Day excursions to Macclesfield’s monthly Treacle market restarted after COVID restrictions were eased in summer 2021. One of the coaches visiting Macclesfield on 26 September 2021 was Harpurs Coaches, Derby MX04 AEM, a Plaxton Panther bodied Volvo B12M that was new to Shearings in April 2004.
Voel Coaches, Dyserth OU17 OTV was photographed at Churchill Way, Macclesfield on 29 May 2022 when it was operating an excursion to Macclesfield’s monthly Treacle Market. This Neoplan N2216/3SHDL Tourliner tri-axle coach was new in July 2017.

Darren Beacher’s YJ11GHY, a Van Hool T915 Alicron coach, was photographed at Churchill Way, Macclesfield on 23 February 2020 when it was operating a day excursion to Macclesfield’s monthly Treacle Market. It was new to Eirebus, Dublin in 2011 registered 11-D-24942.
Macclesfield's new £1.8 million bus station was officially opened on 6 April 2004 and replaced the bus station on Sunderland Street that had served the town since it was opened by North Western Road Car in 1939.
The old bus station continued to be used by Arriva North West & Wales for parking buses that could not be accommodated in the adjoining depot until the buses were moved to new premises at Gaw End Lane in October 2004.
Photographed at the old bus station in April 2004 were Arriva North West & Wales 1131 (H851NOC) and 100 (P401FEA).
1131 was 9.8 metre Dennis Dart with Carlyle Dartline 43 seat bodywork that was new to Chisholm, Ramsgate (Thanet Bus) in March 1991. It was acquired by Stevensons of Uttoxeter in 1992 and numbered 42 but was later renumbered 551 in the Midland Red North series.
100 was a Mercedes-Benz 709D with Alexander (Belfast) Sprint 25 seat bodywork was new to Stevensons of Uttoxeter, numbered 401, in December 1996.
Both buses passed to Arriva North West & Wales along with Macclesfield depot in February 2003.

Interestingly, whilst Anthony's provide the team transport for Macclesfield Town FC, on this occasion the coach had been used to deliver the Aldershot FC team and officials the short distance to Macclesfield's Moss Rose ground from Macclesfield railway station, after the team had travelled up from the London area by train.

Darren Beacher’s Van Hool Alizee bodied DAF SB4000 coach YJ04BYG was photographed at Churchill Way, Macclesfield when operating a day excursion to Macclesfield’s Treacle Market on 28 October 2018. This coach was new to Fishwick, Leyland in March 2004 and was later re-registered B10FWS when it passed to F W Stainton & Son, Kendal. Other operators of this coach include Hunters Coaches, Alloa, Mitchells Coaches, Stirling, MacDonald Coaches, Balallan, Simpson’s Coaches, Rosehearty, KT’s Coaches, Kendal, JP Coaches, Forfar, MW Nicoll, Laurencekirk and Hobson Travel, Larkhall. It was registered HSU247 for a short period before reverting to its original registration in 2017.
Memories of a lost business. Macclesfield's Woolworths on Mill Street in the run up to Christmas in 2007. Just over a year later it would be closed as the business went into administration. The shop is now an Iceland outlet.
Bethan is a regular frequenter of Macclesfield's monthly Treacle Market. Showing enterprise and initiative the gutsy fourteen year-old's saxophone penetrates the bustling chatter and competing sounds.This extra practice in the street gathers in an additional source of financial support for her music and other hobbies and interests. As well as the saxophone Bethan is also a student of the clarinet and her repertoire includes both classical and swing/jazz classics.

Following Cheshire East Council’s supported bus service review, the Monday to Sunday and Bank Holidays route 200 between Wilmslow and Manchester Airport operated by Springfield Bus & Coach was withdrawn from 31 March 2018 and replaced by an extension of D&G Bus commercial Monday to Saturday route 130 linking Macclesfield with Manchester Airport via Wilmslow operated from 1 April 2018. D&G Bus had started to operate route 130 between Macclesfield and the Handforth Dean Retail Park from 29 January 2018 but the route ceased to serve the Colshaw Farm Estate and Handforth Dean from the end of March.
D&G Bus 30 (SL64JGF) was photographed leaving Macclesfield bus station for Manchester Airport on 13 April 2018. This Alexander Dennis E20D with 39 seat Enviro 200 bodywork was new to South Lancs Travel in January 2015 but was transferred to D&G Bus before South Lancs was sold to Rotala in March 2015.
D&G subsequently announced that route 130 would be withdrawn after 16 June 2018 because insufficient passengers were being carried to cover the operating costs.
The sculpture next to the bus by artist Andrew Smith was commissioned by Cheshire County Council and symbolises Macclesfield's silk manufacturing history, containing elements of a weaving loom.
In November 1993 Stevensons of Uttoxeter took delivery of two DAF DB250s with Optare Spectra 77 seat bodywork. They were originally numbered 94/5 but were renumbered 1994/5 in the Midland Red series during 1996. In February 1997 Stevensons transferred 1995 (L95HRF) from Burton to Macclesfield depot and it was photographed at Park Green, Macclesfield on 22 February 1997. It replaced 1904 (EEH904Y), one of Macclesfield's ECW bodied Leyland Olympians, that was damaged in a collision with the Buxton Road railway bridge.
Visiting Macclesfield’s Christmas Treacle Market on 23 December 2018 was Darren Beacher’s Van Hool Alizee bodied DAF SB4000 coach YJ04BYG. Henshaws Coaches, Jacksdale Bova Futura FHD12.340 coach HXZ6038 was photographed at Duke Street Car Park, Macclesfield when operating a day excursion to Macclesfield’s Treacle Market on 27 May 2018. This coach was new to Coach Options, Middleton in April 2006 registered YJ06GKU.
After Macclesfield's new bus station opened in April 2004 the old bus station, which had been built by North Western Road Car in 1939, continued to be used by Arriva North West & Wales for parking buses that could not be accommodated in the adjoining depot until the buses were moved to new premises at Gaw End Lane at the end of October 2004. The old bus station was photographed on 24 October 2004 while vehicles were being moved to the new depot. The depot and bus station were subsequently demolished and the site redeveloped as the Waters Green Medical Centre.

Grayway Coaches BV19YHU, a Mercedes-Benz Tourismo coach that was new in June 2019, was photographed at Churchill Way, Macclesfield on 27 October 2019 when it was operating an excursion to Macclesfield’s monthly Treacle Market.
Little Gem, a company owned by the proprietor of Go Goodwins, was awarded the contract to operate the Cheshire East Council supported 391/392 Macclesfield to Stockport routes from 22 June 2020. Three new Alexander Dennis Enviro 200 MMCs with Little Gem branding were acquired for this contract and entered service on 6 July 2020. One of these was 1949 (YX20 OGW), photographed leaving Macclesfield bus station on 12 September 2020.

Newly acquired Voel Coaches 3377VC was photographed at Churchill Way, Macclesfield on 25 November 2018 when operating a day excursion to Macclesfield’s monthly Treacle Market. This Plaxton Panther bodied MAN 18.400 coach was new to P&O Lloyd Coaches, Bagillt in April 2008 registered YN08AUE and later passed to Jacksons Coaches, Blackpool.
Macclesfield’s monthly Treacle Market is growing in popularity as a destination for day coach excursions. Laying over on Churchill Way, Macclesfield at the pre-Christmas market on 17 December 2017 were coaches from North Wales and Leeds: BE Davies Coaches, Mold GIG7078, a DAF SB3000 with Van Hool Alizee bodywork, Darren Beacher’s Van Hool Alizee bodied DAF SB4000 coach YJ04BYG and Blue Sky Coaches, Leeds VDL Futura L99BSC.
A wet winter's day at Macclesfield's deserted bus station, Monday 6th February 1978. Parked on the oily apron was Crosville's DDG 313, a Daimler Fleetline CRG6LX with Alexander body, formerly of North Western Road Car Co. and acquired when, in 1972, that company was broken up and apportioned between three larger operators.
Drawing pictures in the condensation of steamed-up windows was an innocent amusement of many young passengers in those days. The destination looks like Manchester; a fair old way. I suppose the heaters would have been blowing cold air. Note diabolical cigarette advertising.
