It rarely happens, but every so often the display will look like it does in this photo. It goes away with a restart, but I want to find out what's causing the problem.

I'll be interested to see if it's part of this issue or not, as I do have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT:

Update 2008/10/16: Stopped into the Fashion Valley Apple Store, and they took it in for repair. I think it was Daniel that helped me at the genius bar, and he said that they would likely replace the screen/clamshell. They estimate that it will take 3-4 days, and I will update this picture once I hear back.

Update - Date Unknown because I forgot when they returned my laptop, but I'm making this update on 2/1/2009: The Apple store ended up replacing the entire screen / upper half. I haven't had the problem return after the screen replacement. Everything appears to be working fine now.

Nothing is ever easy. Some people just weren't meant to use technology.

I received my Griffin Elevator last night via FedEx. Setup is great!

The LCD on my laptop died and I took it by the Apple Store for a replacement. When they gave me my laptop back they hadn't just replaced the LCD but the entire top cover. I was shocked as I had no idea they'd be doing that and asked if I could keep the old broken one as I had a lot of stickers on it that I didn't think I could replace and that meant a lot to me. The lady initially told me they no longer had it, then finally said they did have it but had to return it to Apple and the only way I could keep it would be to have them undo the repair. I offered to buy it, begged even but no go. She did bring it out so I could snap this last photo before they took it away.

just a couple pictures I took to illustrate something at macosx hints.

The box on the left is the shipping box for the new Macbook Pro. The one on the right is the 2003 iBook G4 box for comparison. The iBook's logic board does not work anymore; probably will recycle or sell for it parts.

I happened to have my work MBP and my home MBP together when I bought the newest MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

Sitting them side by side, the screen resolution and brightness are remarkably different, even to these old eyes. That said, they are all amazing machines.

The lego moves into my broken MBP

So, in the book of Genesis, after God creates the heavens and the earth, he takes all of the creatures of the earth and he shows them to man so that man can name the creatures of the earth.

The interpretation I've always learned is that the bible's trying to communicate that man has a power over the animals, because naming something implies that you have power over it. So God named us, and we named the animals.

Oh, and while we're on the subject I tend not to consider every single word of the bible as a literal truth. I mean, Genesis also spends a lot of time describing the earth as flat. It's pretty hard to consider the earth flat, no? Meanwhile, the Catholic church has come up with an interesting philosophy to follow: In the contention between science and religion, the facts produced by science should not require God to be a deceiver. In other words, Occam's razor. It makes much more sense for the earth to be billions of years old and the bible's a little figurative than trying to go on about the universe being a few thousand years old where God planted a bunch of false evidence just to trick us.

Sorry. Just had to throw my defense that not all Christians are against evolution there.

The main point of the pic is the shell script about to be run -- Release Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf.

Things must have names... and by giving my piece of software that I've written just about everything but a few pieces of monitoring code a name implies my power and ownership over it.

The general pattern is to have the first character of the company name as the first word in your acronym. Which is really unbelievably lame. So I like giving things fun names.

Like "Hank". We came up with an acronym that spells HADD so that the official documentation doesn't delve into Howard Stern. And, it really does make sense why you'd call it Hank... in a weird Wirehead sort of way.

But, either way, even though *you* probably won't notice how the site I maintain works post-Hank, we will.

I'm quite proud of this little piece of software. And an engineer's pride is worth more than gold. Without software shipped (or bridges built or jet fighters flying or power plants generating) all the money in the world isn't going to make an engineer happy. So I'm happy to be adding my own little deviant fingerprint on the years and years of software accumulation.
