Conrail train TV-7, led by a pair of classy SD80MACs, passes Berea Tower

A pair of shiny SD9043MACs pull an 86-car CRSBG coal empty through Riverton, Utah on May 30, 1997. UP 8070 and 8099 were built by EMD for the UP in Sept. 1996 and Feb. 1997 respectively.

While sunrise may have been an hour ago the sun has just cleared the Chugach Mountains and is providing direct sun for the first time on this day. During the summer Bird Point is the first location, and not a bad one at that, to catch the southbound Coastal Classic in direct sun. On this running with a MAC and an ex-Amtrak F40 converted to a power car to power the HEP for the train. On my first visit the HEP was provided by a converted E9B numbered P30 the two Amtrak units are numbered right above as P31 & P32.

Thank you very much for choosing my pic♥

Westbound empty auto train M27717 heads through the MARC station in Germantown. Beginning in summer of this year, the MACs have become much more common on CSX trains in the DC area.

In what was a very odd move, a pair of BNSF SD70MACs, still in BN "Executive" colors, lead loaded CSX coal train N910 down into the Thornapple River valley. This train of Powder River coal, which was destined for Consumer's JH Campbell plant in West Olive, would normally run up the Grand Rapids sub to Holland and continue north to West Olive. The details are fuzzy to me now, but I believe the train was re-routed "the long way" via Toledo and Plymouth because of a derailment on the NS near Porter, IN where the GR sub connects to the NS Chicago district. I want to say this was the only time I ever saw this happen. Also, I absolutely loved those cream and green MACs with the classic BNSF logo on the nose!
