Activated using my Martindale FL30 HV tester, . This is like having a miniature Geissler tube within a robust glass envelope.

I don't know the precise gas fill, but the tube glows bright pink/purple while the electrodes glow bright orange. Therefore, my guess would be neon with some other component added (maybe argon, helium or even mercury), but I could be wrong.

They state that these are neon-filled tubes, but the colour of the discharge suggests some other component, as pure neon glows bright red.

This device was apparently used as a high voltage indicator on switchgear, but I don't know much more about it than that. The writing on the tube is as follows:
