September 2018 Full Moon

Day 11. Got it! Just thought I'd check the sky before I went to bed and the moon was back out from behind the clouds. Waited until midnight and managed to bag my moon shot for day 11.

It's been in the news: "This is the first big partial eclipse to happen in the UK since 1999, and the next one isn't until August 2026, so this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity." - So all gear set up and waiting - hoping for a glimpse of that "once-in-a-generation" event...

BUT the weather didn't play by the rules where I live: Muddy skiess all morning... No sun to be seen, let alone the moon trying to cover it up...

Still, with all the gear in place, when the clouds went I decided to do a shot of the sun (background image - HDR'ed) and "post-processed" my moon in with Photoshop afterwards.

Ha: If you cannot rely on UK clear skies, create your own eclipse! ;-)

Made for mental sanity & Sliders Sunday: HSS!

The moon on this night (August 17th) looked full but it doesn't technically become a full moon until August 18th at 2:27 PDT. It seemed especially bright tonight and looked wonderful. There seems to be many names for the moon on for this particular lunar showing. Sometimes referred to as the "Full Green Corn Moon", "Blueberry Moon", "Full Sturgeon Moon". the later name from Native American stories that this is the best time to fish for the namesake Sturgeon.

Tonight's 'Supermoon' (29/08/2015) is the first of three spectacular lunar shows this year

That means the moon is very full and bright in the sky, because it has come very close to earth.

Tonight's full moon is just 222,631 miles from earth - one of the closest approaches of the year.

Last Friday night I wanted to take an image of the lunar eclipse, but it wasn't visible in the valley where we live. Hence, we decided to drive up the hill next to our house and after waiting a few minutes the clouds moved and the moon emerged. Since we were pretty late I didn't catch the blood moon, but I'm happy that I got an image despite some troubles. First, I'm not yet very familiar with my new Sony A7II and changing settings took me longer than usual. Moreover, my cheap Tamron tele lens doesn't have a tripod collar which means that my ballhead was moving due to the front heavy weight. Anyway, I think it turned out reasonably well. Hope you like it!

Took this last night and its my first time shooting pictures of the moon.

Went out on this relative clear evening to catch the moon there in the 'blue sky'. There was some very very thin cloud layer there that added just a hint of glow as the sun was setting.

You can compare this view to the one night before in the darker sky. Like the moon here on the blue sky at sunset.

و القمر قدرناه منازل حتى عاد كالعرجون القديم .. سورة يس، آية 39

"And the Moon, ---We have measured for her mansions (to serve) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date stalk."

I cropped the actual shot and it seems closer than using 200mm coz its 10.2 Megapixels =)

The Moon is the only celestial body to which humans have travelled and upon which humans have performed a manned moon landing. The first artificial object to escape Earth's gravity and pass near the Moon was the Soviet Union's Luna 1, the first artificial object to impact the lunar surface was Luna 2, and the first photographs of the normally occluded far side of the Moon were made by Luna 3, all in 1959. The first spacecraft to perform a successful lunar soft landing was Luna 9; this was soon followed with the first successful lunar soft landing by Surveyor 1 and the first unmanned vehicle to orbit the Moon by Luna 10, all in 1966. The United States (U.S.) Apollo program achieved the only manned missions to date, resulting in six landings between 1969 and 1972. Human exploration of the Moon ceased with the conclusion of the Apollo program, although a few robotic landers and orbiters have been sent to the Moon since that time. Several countries have announced plans to return humans to the surface of the Moon in the 2020s.

I tried a redux of the Moon tonight, since it wasn't hazy. It is a slight bit better, but I think I can still do better. The moon was lower, so perhaps better to wait until it's high in the sky so the light is traveling through less atmosphere. Also, a quarter moon or so makes for a more dramatic terminator, when the craters and peaks are highlighted by the sun edge-on.

The moon (78.2%) on the 28th May 2015 at Grantown on Spey, Scotland. The 'Kicking Donkey' in full view.

In memory of John, May 2015.

I had trouble with the clouds (in the way again!), but the moon finally moved into a clearing...

Zoomed into Moon

Full moon. Snapped through telescope. June 15, 2011.

"The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections."

Quote - Tahereh Mafi

Spotted this somewhere in a shelter place;-))

The black text says: The moon always smiles (in Dutch: Het maantje lacht altijd)

Happy Wall Wednesday ;-))
