Coal loads head south through Mena with a grey AC4400CW leading on a fine October 16th morning in 2005.
Los hayedos se caracterizan en otoño por su explosión de tonalidades verdes, dorados y rojizos.
Las hojas de la haya son ovaladas y de un verde intenso con un borde ligeramente ondulado. En otoño se tiñen de colores espectaculares, como el amarillo, el naranja y el rojo, creando un tapiz deslumbrante que cubre el suelo del bosque. Este cambio de color no sólo es hermoso, sino que también es un indicador de la salud del ecosistema, ya que las hojas caídas enriquecen el suelo al descomponerse.
En la mayoría de los hayedos, es común encontrar arroyos que serpentean entre los árboles. El sonido del agua fluyendo suavemente añade una dimensión mágica al ambiente, creando un espacio de tranquilidad y conexión con la naturaleza. Estos arroyos son vitales para el ecosistema, ya que proporcionan agua a la flora y fauna del bosque, y su presencia contribuye a la biodiversidad del área.
El hayedo, con su combinación de tonalidades, hojas vibrantes y el murmullo del agua, es un lugar donde se puede experimentar la serenidad y la belleza de la naturaleza en su máxima expresión. KCSM 4722 North rolls into Mena, Arkansas at the foot of Rich Mountain with stacks and mixed freight for Kansas City.
The Kansas City, Pittsburg, and Gulf laid rail through Polk County in 1896 bypassing the original county seat of Dallas and establishing the town of Mena. The current depot was built by the KCS in 1920 replacing the original 1897 depot built by the KCP&G. Passenger service ended in 1969 with the discontinuation of the Southern Belle.
Having just finished the journey down Rich Mountain the KCS (Now CPKC) business train rolls up to Mena with the mountain looming in the distance.

A little further down the line at the base of the Rich mountain, our southbound KCS freight flies through the town of Mena, Arkansas with plenty of momentum.
A definite bucket list shot for me, KCS 3948 takes M262 south into Mena after battling Rich Mountain.

MSHKC05 hustles through town running 2x1 DPU with a GE/EMD duo on the point and a lone EMD on the hind end. The Shreveport to Kansas City manifest is at about MP 379.8 on the Shreveport Sub passing the gorgeous 1920 built depot designed by company architect, T. C. Horstmann with Mediterranean styling. It saw the last Southern Belle call in November 1969 but somehow has been one of very few KCS depots to survive. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 it is now owned by the city, and houses a local history museum and the chamber of commerce.
