I've been trying to make a larger version of one of these for so long. A massive shortage of dark brown pieces and a general lack of skill means that this is what I ended up with. Ah well, maybe I'll just need to micro scale my Cadillacs & Dinosaurs stuff ;)

It seems that she has intercepted a transmission of unknown origin. She got us up to check it out.

Mastodon in the rain. Spent 2 days and 13 hours photographing in the rain. Gotta love outdoor festivals.

This beach is called Elephant Rocks, but since it was 14°F there this morning it felt like it should be called mastodon rocks. Brrrr! Really glad I picked up a down jacket for this trip!! :)

The sunrise this morning was bluebird, but there was some nice glow reflected on the new england granite so I focused on that and the great textures.

I really enjoyed shooting these guys. LOTS of other images at www.livebabylive.com.

Tough shoot. The lighting sucked, but the band put on a hell of a show. They delivered on a 2 page set list.

Let's talk about Zords. It's no secret that I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Power Rangers reboot. Space witches, alien technology, colorfully animated heroes, and robotic dinosaurs. New look, same stuff. Gah. I love it!

The Zords have been under scrutiny for their redesign for the new movie, but then again, what doesn't? In particular the extra amount of legs both Triceratops and Mastodon now have has been criticized for being ridiculous and unrealistic. Yo. The original Triceratops Zord in the TV show had tank treads instead of legs.

A mastodon skull is on display at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre as part of a "pop-up" exhibit titled, Mammoth vs Mastodon. Now you can walk around this skull, and compare it to the Mammoth that we also have on display at the centre. Although both animals lived in the Yukon, and both animals resemble an elephant, more or less, they are seprated by about 30 million years of evolution from each other. They are in many ways, very different.

The Mastodon is the 3rd generation of heavy equipment transporters for Zeus. The tractor is built by MAN and is powered by a 300hp diesel hybrid engine capable of 2900Nm torque. There's a variety of trailers that can be hooked up to the tractor, in this case a 60 ton telescopic trailer produced by Doll.

I had the HET planned since I started building the MAN truck lineup and had already considered design options, when Aleks suddenly revealed his ATLAS HET. I guess we both sensed the lack of heavy tractor trailers ^^

That was motivation enough to fast-track the building of this and I am quite happy with the result.

Among all the newest sleek and superfast battlesuits this guy looks like a mastodon. Yeah, we all know what a modern battlesuit can do to mastodons. So this model is pretty rare ("extinct" is the word) and even the newest among them are well worn and need some serious maintenance... The thing is, this is pretty much the only still operational hardsuit with a diesel engine (some modifications carry a gas turbine). It is loud and creates clouds of exhaust. The only way to survive in a clash when piloting this suit is to hide among trees and wait for your enemies to be blown up by their own grenade. It is a popular model among bandits, smugglers and some other antisocial elements though. Maybe because it doesn't require and expensive chem batteries or cold synthesis reactors. Just a good old diesel fuel.

That's an old model of mine and an old render. I uploaded this just to fill in the gap between my previous and my next big creation which takes really long time...

Mastodon @ Bonnaroo - June 14 2008

Initially, the photographers were going to be denied the opportunity to shoot Mastodon, because security felt that the crowd would get too crazy. So we all stood to the side and waited a few songs, until they finally decided to let 5 of us in at a time. Funny thing is, the crowd was mostly a bunch of pot smoking hippies who'd rather chill out than crowd surf...I think I saw one single person being pulled out of the crowd for surfing during the 8 or so songs I was there. Either way, I'm glad we got to shoot...Mastodon are up there as one of my all-time fave bands to photograph.
