Shaded polar stereographic projection map of Mars' south polar region, based on Mariner 6 & 7 imagery, circa 1969.
"We've" come a long way since, eh?
The map is part of an August 1970 NASA Mars Chart:

For comparison/contrast:
“The “Giant’s Footprint”, two adjacent craters foreshortened by oblique viewing of the south polar cap of Mars. The sun is 8° above the local horizon off to the northwest (upper left). These craters can be seen in previous wide-angle picture 19 (M7-112). This high resolution picture shows an area approximately 85 x 200 miles in dimension located about 75° south latitude. Dr. R. B. Leighton heads the Television Experiment Team.”
Approved in 1976 by the IAU, the larger of the two craters is named Vishniac.

Mars from Mariner 6.
I believe the localized bright spot (with dark center component) just above and slightly to the right of the planet's center to be 'Nix Olympica '.
