Photography is really quite magical, isn't it? Here the giant giraffes and acacia trees are dwarfed by the elephant. The results brought a smile to my face.

I was giving up on being able to get a sunset picture in Kenya. We went out on sundowners every night they were great apart from not having a sunset due to cloud. Finally in the Mara the sun behaved. I left it a bit late taking the shot and had to use a very high ISO (1600) to get a steady image

The Salt Mines of Maras are located 50 km in the northeast of Cusco city, at an altitude of 3,200m.They are located in the lower part of the sub-basin and left bank of the Salineras stream, towards its mouth in the river Vilcanota, in the jurisdiction of the peasant communities of Maras and Pichingoto, between the gorge of the Qaqahuiñay, Cruz Mocco, Llully Mocco and Chupayoq hills.

The salt mines themselves are constituted by a set of approximately 4,500 salt wells placed in the form of stepped terraces in the middle slope of the hill Qaqawiñay, which has slopes of 20 degrees of inclination to the bottom of the gorge on the left bank of the Salineras stream, with dimensions that vary around 5 linear meters, occupying a total area of approximately 1.5 to 2 hectares.

Salt extraction in Maras, Peru. This woman was still at work in the late afternoon. She gave me the chance to help her for a while. It is a hard work done by the local population collectively. Profits are distributed in proportion to the number of extraction wells that are owned. Each well produces on average between 150 and 200 kg of salt per month.

Salineras de Maras (Sacred Valley of The Incas) 20221126

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a territory full of incredible landscapes and unique archeological sites. One of the most visited are the famous Salineras de Maras.

The Salineras de Maras is made up of more than 3 thousand natural salt wells near the town of Maras. Each of the wells has a dimension of 5 square meters.

The 3,000 pools are fed by an underground hypersaline spring that originated 110 million years ago during the formation of the Andes Mountains.

Currently, these natural salt pools attract hundreds of tourists. The view you get from this landscape is beautiful.

The inhabitants of Maras sold this salt, just as the Incas did hundreds of years ago.

What do photographers do? Most of the time, they seek to reproduce images that they saw in their childhood or in the more recent past. I am very happy to be able to do this and to succeed in producing images almost as beautiful as those which were in my memory. These are the iconic images.

Then, when we advance in mastery, sometimes the Universe offers us access to our own compositions. But the way to learn is to go through iconic images.

Salineras de Maras (Sacred Valley of The Incas) 20221126

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a territory full of incredible landscapes and unique archaeological sites. One of the most visited are the famous Salineras de Maras.

The Salineras de Maras is made up of more than 3,000 natural salt wells near the town of Maras. Each of the wells has a dimension of 5 square meters.

These pools are fed by a hypersaline underground spring that originated 110 million years ago during the formation of the Andes Mountains.

The people of Maras commercialize this salt, just as the Incas did hundreds of years ago.

Legend has it that the salty waters that flow from the mountain are the tears of Ayar Cachi. Within Inca mythology, this was one of the 4 brothers and sisters that originated the great empire of the Incas: The God Wiracocha made these brothers come out of a cave to found a great empire. Ayar Cachi threw a stone at a mountain forming a ravine. Then his brothers, fearing his strength and power, locked him up in the cave with deception, preventing him from being the founder of the empire. The tears of this character formed the pools that the sun dried later, forming the salt flats.

Since pre-Inca times, salt has been obtained by evaporating water ponds, from Maras subterranean streams. The town of Maras is located in Cusco, Peru.
