According to Wikipedia, Photinia (/foʊˈtɪniə, fə-/) is a genus of about 40–60 species of small trees and large shrubs, but the taxonomy has recently varied greatly, with the genera Heteromeles, Stranvaesia and Aronia sometimes included in Photinia.

They are a part of the rose family (Rosaceae) and related to the apple. The botanical genus name derives from the Greek word photeinos for shiny and refers to the often glossy leaves. Most species are evergreen, but deciduous species also occur. The small apple-shaped fruit has a size of 4 to 12 mm and forms in large quantities. They ripen in the fall and often remain hanging on the bush until well into the winter. The fruits are used as food by birds, which excrete the seeds with their droppings and thereby distribute the plant.

The natural range of these species is restricted to warm temperate Asia, from the Himalaya east to Japan and south to India and Thailand. They have, however, been widely cultivated throughout the world as ornamentals for their white flowers and red fruits.

The scientific name Photinia is also widely used as the common name. Another name sometimes used is "Christmas berry", but this name is a source of confusion, since it is commonly applied to plants in several genera including Heteromeles, Lycium, Schinus, and Ruscus. The name "photinia" also continues to be used for several species of small trees in the mountains of Mexico and Central America which had formerly been included in the genus Photinia.

Lycium barbarum is a shrub native to China, with present-day range across Asia and southeast Europe. It is one of two species of boxthorn in the family Solanaceae from which the goji berry or wolfberry is harvested, the other being Lycium chinense.

Goji, goji berry, or wolfberry (Chinese: 枸杞; pinyin: gǒuqǐ) is the sweet fruit of either Lycium barbarum or Lycium chinense, two closely related species of boxthorn in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. L. barbarum and L. chinense fruits are similar but can be distinguished by differences in taste and sugar content.

Parkinsonia microphylla, Yellow Paloverde.

Yellow Paloverde is a relatively small spiny tree or shrub that is heavily branched with an open crown, the bark is smooth, yellow-green and has the ability to photosynthesize.

In Arizona, Yellow Paloverde, Parkinsonia microphylla, is "Salvage Assessed, Harvest Restricted" (A permit from the Department of Agriculture is necessary to transport this species off private property.)

Yellow Paloverde trees live more than 70 years of age.

Yellow Paloverde is one of the most common trees of the Sonoran Desert where it is both an indicator species and a co-dominant plant along with other co-dominant species including Creosote-bush (Larrea), Triangle Bursage (Ambrosia), Brittlebush (Encelia), Ocotillo (Fouquieria) and Wolfberry (Lycium). This community is sometimes called the Paloverde, Bursage desert scrub community.

Yelow Paloverde flowers are visted and pollinated by honeybees and native bees.

Parkinsonia microphylla is used for food by southwestern United States indigenous peoples.

To get to Pupput - see recent photos - I would follow the right bank up the Wadi Moussa and cross a footbridge to the other side and the site of that ancient city. The sandy and sometimes muddy path along the wadi is used by dromedaries and horses, and walkers. But they have to fend their way along the very ferocious branches of African Boxwood, Lycium ferocissimum. Even if you're using Olymp carefully you're liked to be jabbed...

Interestingly our shrub has pretty flowers and at the same time carries bright red or orange fruits.

The shrub is dispersed all over the Mediterranean and much of Africa. The name 'Lycium' derives from the Roman province of Lycia in southern Anatolia. Of course - given my interest in the christendom of Pupput - that brought to mind the Apostle Paul, who on one of his missionary journeys traveled through Lycia and Pamphylia, thorn in his flesh and all. As wide-ranging as his gospel, so also this plant, thorns and all.

Wolfberry. Winter garden Color.

The Duke of Argyll's Tea Plant is the common name for Lycium barbarum, a deciduous shrub known for its edible red berries, commonly called goji berries or wolfberries. It's native to Asia but has been cultivated in the UK since the 18th century, gaining its common name from the 3rd Duke of Argyll who introduced it. The plant is relatively easy to grow, reaching a height of 1-3 meters, and is known for its spiny stems and purple flowers. It was lovely to see this growing wild along the roadside verge.

Paloverde is relatively rare in the United States where it occurs only in Arizona and California.

Fuerteventura Stonechat (Saxicola dacotiae)

www.researchgate.net/publication/242743155_Diet_Compositi...

datazone.birdlife.org/species/factsheet/fuerteventura-sto...

L'estinzione potrebbe essere dovuta all'effetto dei predatori introdotti oltre all'alterazione dell'habitat.

Texas Wolfberry. This species, though endemic to the area is rarely seen in the Big Bend Ranch State Park. This specimen resides in the interpretive gardens at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center in Lajitas, Texas. The flowers are small -- only a millimeter or so in diameter, 3 or 4 millimeter long. This closeup photo is a focus-stacked composite of around 15 or 20 individual exposures. I'll try to get pictures of the fruits when they appear later this year.

Timanfaya National Park is home to a wide variety of animal and plant species that have been able to adapt perfectly to the sun and the lack of water. Fungi and lichens have prepared the soil and made way for a more complex flora. In places that were not covered by the lava flows, the most abundant species are the Euphorbia balsamífera and the Kleinia neriifolia, accompanied by the Lycium intricatum, the Salsola vermiculata and the Chenoleoides tomentosa.
