Les fruits du lierre sont des drupes : une drupe est un fruit charnu avec un noyau.

Comme toutes les parties de la plante, les fruits sont toxiques pour les mammifères et en particulier pour l’homme.

Cependant, les fruits du lierre peuvent être consommés par des oiseaux. Leur richesse en lipides (graisse) jouent un rôle important comme source de nourriture à la fin de l’hiver.

La dispersion des graines est directement liée à cette consommation, car les oiseaux ne les digèrent pas et elles sont alors recrachées par le bec ou éjectées via les fientes.

Lumi loves to graze with her herd at Chiesa Farm conservation land in Lexington. Our farm's herd joined them today, like every weekend. After munching on grass and leaves, we stopped under an oak tree, where the goats enjoyed eating crunchy acorns. The rest of us gathered them in our pockets, to give to the goats in the winter.

I had the pleasure of accompanying the Goodwin Hill goats as they foraged at the nearby Chiesa Farm conservation land in Lexington today. I learned about caring for goats and using herd management in education, and also snapped many photos, of course.

This is Lumi, born February 20, 2023.
