Second pile-up in as many days! After a few years, it's nice to finally practice again. Check out Ivana's original shot ♥

When to Lockhart, Texas, about an hours drive from me, just to take pictures. And, I spotted this fire house. I couldn't find much history on it but I did find a lot of information on the history of Lockhart. Here you go:

Caldwell County soil was found to be hospitable to cotton. After years of experimentation, Lockhart's A.D. Mebane developed a particularly hardy strain of cotton that continues to set a worldwide standard.

Oil and Texas are synonymous and Lockhart had its days as a boom town with the discovery and development of oil fields in the 1920's. Shallow field exploration continues in Caldwell County, with a major field surrounding Luling.

The coming of railroads and automobiles changed the face of Lockhart, as for all of America. The Sunset rail route reached Luling in 1874, and the Missouri, Kansas, Texas arrived in Lockhart in 1885. The first automobile in Lockhart was hand built by Lockhart blacksmith Emil Seeliger. The total cost of the contraption, including the $60 worth of tubeless tires, was $125. He took the car for its first drive in 1904, attaining the speed of 15 miles per hour.

Excerpt from facebook.com:

A couple years ago the Frosty's Village team (Melissa & Christina (shown here) along with Annie and Leah and Robert) started putting up the same Frosty inflatable, hoping to brighten up their neighbourhood. That grew into a campaign to see if the neighbours would band together and put up as many Frostys as possible. If you want to join in on the fun, Christina has a few Frostys ready to go. They’re building on last year's great success and it's become a MUST-SEE nighttime drive thru for your family in December with about 100 Frostys up so far. So many Frostys went up last weekend, and now is a great time to visit and count all the Frostys in Frosty’s village. They partnered with @burlfoodbank to collect food donations as well – the food drive will run for the month of December. When you visit Frosty’s Village consider dropping off a non-perishable food item at 1148 Lockhart Rd! It is well lit with two Frostys, some signage and a bin for your donation!

A view looking north from Prairie Lea St. at the west side of the 200 block of S. Main St. in downtown Lockhart. My previous post shows this block looking south from Market St. All of the buildings in this view are contributing properties in the Caldwell County Courthouse Square Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

On the corner is the Dr. Eugene Clark Public Library, the oldest continuously operating public library in the State of Texas. Built in 1899 and dedicated on July 6, 1900, this library was financed with funds bequeathed by Dr. Clark, who was a prominent physician of Lockhart and San Antonio. His will left $10,000 to the people of Lockhart, of which $6,000 was to be used for construction, $1,000 to buy books and the remainder was to be put in a trust to maintain the building and purchase new books. A native of New Orleans, Dr. Clark was a graduate of Tulane Medical School and studied in Vienna, Austria. He was an eye, ear, nose, and throat specialist. He died, while still a young man, in New York City in 1897.

President William Howard Taft once spoke from the stage in the library and operatic soprano and musical theater actress Dorothy Sarnoff has performed here, remarking to her audience, "If you are bored with my performance tonight, you can just reach over and grab a good book to read." Many local community groups and organizations held theatrical productions, recitals and concerts in the library. The Local Community concert group held seasonal programs in the building until 1956.

The two-story Greek cross plan library is a Classical Revival building of red brick with limestone trim. Four projecting pedimented pavilions form the arms, while entrances are found at

the southeast, southwest and northeast intersections. On the main (east) facade, the pavilion, divided into three bays by pilasters, contains a central, stained glass memorial windows classically framed by pilasters and a round keystone arch. The southeast (main) entrance has double doors with a multi-lighted fanlight also framed by the pilasters and keystone arch. Crowning the building an octagonal drum, embellished by pilasters and entablature, supports the central dome. The building was designed and built by T. S. Hodges, who also designed the castle-like Caldwell County Jail.

The three-story red brick building with white stone trim standing to the north of the library is the old Masonic Temple built in 1925 for Lockhart Masonic Lodge #690. The building is now used for commercial purposes.

Lockhart, a community of 14,811 at the 2020 census, is the seat of Caldwell County and is located just 30 miles south of the state capital in downtown Austin. Lockhart's square and downtown is filled with late 19th and early 20th century buildings, nearly all contributing properties to the historic district. The city's turn-of-the-century appearance has attracted the attention of film makers. Over 50 films for the theater and TV have been shot in whole or in part in Lockhart, including the 1996 Christopher Guest comedy film Waiting for Guffman and the 1993 drama What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

This pier was rebuilt recently. The Gulf Stream current comes right to Lake Worth Beach, bringing species you don’t typically find close to shore right into the surf.

It's the first place an angler caught a sailfish from land. When the northwest winds blow in winter, a few diehard anglers launch live baits clipped to kites and fly the baits out to deeper water.

This pier is also a legendary snook fishing spot. Plenty of pompano, cobia and snappers are caught as well. You can rent tackle and buy bait right there as well.

The hurricane seasons of 2004 and 2005, were especially damaging for Lake Worth. The fishing pier was smashed by 3 storms: Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne and Wilma. The pier reopened in 2009 and self funds with modest entry fees for sightseers ($1.00) and fisherman ($3.00). The rebuilt pier has been raised 5 feet. The surfing in Lake Worth is consistently good, as a result of the sandbars created by the pier.

Situated on this pier is a restaurant called Benny's on the Beach, established in 1986, Benny's on the Beach has been a staple of Lake Worth Beach and continues its great reputation as of today.

Benny's features the best breakfast in Palm Beach County. Conveniently located right on the pier of Lake Worth, Benny's on The Beach offers not only amazing food but the one of the nicest views in all of South Florida. Known for the delicious french toast, pancakes, and eggs benedict, Some of their best sellers include Nutty Almond french toast, Stuffed Red Raspberry french toast, Lobster benedict, as well as our humongous three egg omelets.

Benny's also serves up an amazing lunch with some of the freshest seafood around. Appetizers include our world famous Calamari, Garlic Steamed Clams, and our delicious Mussels served in a creamy garlic sauce that is sure to keep you coming for more. Benny's also serves the best gyro pita, burgers, salads, and fresh seafood.

Established in 1986, Benny's on the Beach has been a staple of Lake Worth and continues its great reputation for 27 years and counting

Looking at a photo a second time and deciding to do something different sometimes improves the original photo. The color version of the shot was uninteresting, but turning it to black and white, darkening the overall exposure, and increasing the contrast gave the photograph more interest. What do you think?
