This weekend's activities revolved around the Sudarshana Chakra, Lord Narayanaya's famed spiritual weapon. Known for its protection of the surrendered devotees and its destruction of all negative forces, it was a timely focus for these days of Covid-19 and the fear that seems so prevalent in the world today.

Saturday started with Guru puja, followed by Kalash puja, and then the Sudarshana Yajna began. For this event, not only the main yajna kund was used, but eight individual kunds were placed around the Sudarshana murti located in front of the main temple. Simultaneously, 50 individually-sponsored yajnas were performed on the back lawn by Residents of The Ashram. After the yajnas, Gurudev also performed an abhishekam ceremony on the large murti.

The entire event was livestreamed and commented on by Rishis and Swamis who gave insights into the significance of the Sudarshana Chakra and told personal stories. On Sunday morning, Gurudev joined the prayers to sing a variety of beautiful bhajans, too.

John Nahrgang ordained a deacon, one step closer to priesthood

Photos by Billy Hardiman and story by Ambria Hammel, The Catholic Sun.

In his final minutes as a lay Catholic, seminarian John Nahrgang smiled in anticipation of the big moment. That would come immediately following the proclamation of the Gospel at the May 28 televised and livestreamed Mass at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral, when a chair was placed at the foot of the altar and Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted ordained Nahrgang — a convert to Catholicism — a deacon.

Men who are ordained to the transitional diaconate are one step closer to their ultimate calling to serve the Church as priests. Providentially, Nahrgang’s ordination to the diaconate took place on Ascension Sunday, when the Church recalls Christ’s words to His disciples that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit and become His witnesses to the world.

“You, my son, have been waiting for this day of ordination for several years,” Bishop Olmsted said. “Now the waiting is over — from this day forward, you will be a public witness to Jesus Christ in communion with me and my successors.”

.The Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Arts of China Gallery showcases the museum´s growing collection of Chinese artwork. Stunning examples of ancient and contemporary art, displayed side by side in an innovative juxtaposition, include bronze ware, ceramics, painting, calligraphy, and video. To enhance the contemporary perspective, the MFAH Portals Project invited artist Cai Guo-Qiang to create Odyssey.

Cai executed Odyssey, his gunpowder drawing on 42 panels, at a Houston warehouse on October 5 and 6. The limited number of free tickets for the public to attend the sessions sold out quickly, but the ignition event was livestreamed at CultureMap.com and the MFAH viewing party at Saint Arnold Brewing Company.

The Arts of China Gallery opens to the public on Sunday, October 17. MFAH Members see it first at exclusive preview events Friday-Saturday, October 15-16.

“For years now Cai Guo-Qiang´s gunpowder drawings have fascinated museum audiences from New York to Taiwan. But the public has rarely had an opportunity to see this Chinese-born artist make one. So when officials at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, commissioned him to create Odyssey, one of his largest such drawings, for its new Arts of China gallery, they decided to make the process available to the public.”
