The colour of the egg yolk🍳 is determined by the hen’s diet🐓. .

🐣 A darker yellow-orange yolk ➡️ a hen’s diet that is rich in green plants🌿, yellow corn🌽 and other plant materials rich in xanthophylls pigment (= this is normally the diet of pasture-raised hens). Thus xanthophyll and beta-carotene are higher in the darker yolks ➡️ healthier

.

🐣 A lighter yellow yolk➡️ a hen’s diet that is rich in wheat🌾 or barley or cornmeal

.

⚠️⚠️ However, many egg farmers supplement the hen’s diet with artificial sources of these pigments or natural supplements to give the yolk the same color🙈🙈!

.

✅ Best decision when choosing your eggs: do not rely on the color only. Choose free-range pastured (or organic) eggs👌. Check for eggs that are free of cracks and stored in the refrigerator and the best-before-date should have around one month remaining from the purchase.

.

.
