Light pink and white ginger flower ( etlingera elatior ) taken at the Singapore Botanical Gardens during our last Singapore trip on New Years Day.
Etlingera elatior is a species of herbaceous perennial plant in the family Zingiberaceae; it is native to Thailand, Malesia and New Guinea.
The showy pink flowers are used in decorative arrangements, and are an important ingredient across Southeast Asia.

Peaceful Travel Tuesday
Although autumn has now well and truly given way to winter here in Melbourne, there is still a great deal of colour around if you remember to take your time, stop and look around you.
Thus when I was on a walk to visit a friend of mine a few weeks ago, I went past a garden that always has a lovely show of marguerites at this time of year. Sitting the glorious sunshine that day, their pink petals reminded me of a party frock. This particular variety is quite an old fashioned double petal marguerite called "Jill's Pink".
Argyranthemum is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Asteraceae. Members of this genus are sometimes also placed in the genus Chrysanthemum. They include African daisies, oxeye daisies and marguerite daisies. The genus is endemic to Macaronesia, occurring only on the Canary Islands, the Savage Islands, and Madeira.
Could it be that spring is in the air, even though it is still the middle of winter here in Melbourne?
Today was another remarkably mild day, with sunny blue skies. I could not resist the call of the spring like day, and I went for a walk. I had noticed when I went for a stroll the other week that the magnolias were starting to bloom, so imagine my delight when I noticed this one today like a magnificent cloud of pink blossoms! This particular magnolia is a Saucer Magnolia or Chinese Magnolia.
Magnolia is a large genus of over two hundred flowering plant species. It is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol (1638 - 1715). Magnolia is an ancient genus. Appearing before bees did, the flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles.
You'll find kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana), a brightly colored houseplant, for sale during the late winter and early spring. This popular potted succulent needs very little attention. Its dark-green, scalloped, waxy leaves set off clusters of small flowers in a range of colors. The kalanchoe originally is from Madagascar. It prefers full sun (though it will tolerate bright light) and a well-drained potting soil. Because kalanchoe is a succulent, water only when the soil is dry to the touch. Too much water will rot the plant.
Fun fact: Also known as Christmas Kalanchoe as it flowers during winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" on the 7th of April is "pink colour" where the subject of the photo is not important; but the colour pink should be
the only colour, the main colour or the eye-catcher of the image. What a perfect theme to have, because, I have lots of pink things around my house. However, rather than use one of them, I decided to sit down and bead a Christmas bauble. Yes, I know it's only Easter, but I have many to make before Christmas time, and each one takes time to make. If I make them across the course of the year, it makes the job of beading each one easier.
This Christmas bauble, set on a backdrop of pink tissue paper, was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year and give them as gifts. This one has been made for a little girl of four, who like many little girls, loves the colour pink. I hope she will enjoy hanging it on her Christmas tree this year.
Each bauble is completely hand beaded and takes between two and three hours to make, depending upon the complexity of the pattern. This pattern uses some especially small sequins that are only two millimeters in diameter, so they can take up a lot of time to place. I do hope that you like my choice for the theme and that it makes you smile.

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for Friday the 24th of July is "buttons". It was a warm and sunny summer weekend a few months ago when I took this photograph on the outdoor table on my back terrace in the lovely sunlight. I had been photographing spools using some of my vintage haberdashery pieces. Amongst some of the more recently acquired treasures at the time I wanted to photograph was a beautiful Victorian glass button featuring a classical gilded woman in profile. Although the gilding is worn, I love the way that what remains of it captures the light. I decided to photograph it with some other glass buttons from my collection including other Victorian and Edwardian era buttons, as well as a number of Art Deco ones. Amidst them all, I placed an iridescent pink and lilac Victorian era glass droplet. To enhance the colour of the droplet, and bring out the gilding on the button, I have used some pink figured satin. I really like the pink, warm tones in this shot. I hope that you like my choice for this week's theme as well, and that it makes you smile!

Yes, spring is in the air again, hopefully as a sign that the bitter winter in Melbourne really is finally retreating. Beckoned by a sweetness in the air, the beckoning of the warm sunshine and the promise of spring, I went for a stroll a little while agi. On my walk, I walked past a wonderful ornamental apple blossom covered in clusters of wonderful pink and white blossoms which were being visited by any number of happily buzzing bees! It was wonderful to stop and photograph it in the beautiful sunlight, 'neath the bright blue skies.
Malus is a genus of about thirty to fifty five species of small deciduous trees or shrubs in the family Rosaceae, including the domesticated orchard apple, crab apples and wild apples. The genus is native to the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. Crabapples or ornamental apple blossom trees are known for their beautiful display of pink and white blossoms in spring, and colourful ornamental fruit later in the year.

The theme for "Smile on Saturday" for the 14th of June is "murals". Now, I won’t lie: being a traditionalist, I am no fan of street art, even though I know it is a legitimate and ever evolving art form. Last year I went to a famous Melbourne artists’ market, the Rose Street Market, looking for gifts for Christmas. The inner Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, where Rose Street and the Rose Street Market are, is famous for its murals and street art, as there is so much of it there. This mural is on a small apartment block on Rose Street in Fitzroy, and I only discovered it because I went to the market, and even I must confess that it is very beautiful with its two pink galahs looking down with beady eyes. As I learned from a dear Flickr friend John from Brisbane that the beautiful orange brown eyes that they have denote these two are females. I dedicate this photo to my very dear Flickr friend whom some of you know, The Pocket Rocket. She is a lover (and photographer of) Australian birds, including galahs, and her favourite colour is pink. . I hope you like my choice of this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!

Well I think something is coming, and I know it's going to be great. For finally, after what has felt like a rather cold and bitter winter, there is a sense of spring in the air as the days grow longer. There are more days of blue skies, the temperatures, during the day at any rate, are becoming milder, and the gardens around me are starting to dress themselves in their spring finery, like this old Kobus Magnolia that sits in the garden of an old Edwardian weatherboard villa, which I saw basking in the glorious sunshine on a stroll this afternoon.
Magnolia kobus, known as mokryeon, kobus magnolia, or kobushi magnolia, is a species of Magnolia native to Japan and Korea and occasionally cultivated in temperate areas. Magnolia kobus blooms in the early spring, bearing pleasantly fragrant white flowers with hints of pale pink about four inches in diameter. The flowers are produced before the leaves, as with most members of Magnolia subgenus Yulania. Young trees do not flower.

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year.
Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the stars which are 8mm. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the stars until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in.
These baubles are smaller than some others I do, however because it is a complex pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours per side.
It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.
When it was my birthday two years ago, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.
Those wonderful gifts are what has inspired me to create this series of "Embroider my World" images featuring examples from my vintage bobbin collection. In this case I am using two of my Dewhurst's Sylko Flame reels of cotton which date from between 1938 and 1954. The spool sits on a vibrant orange silk Kurta from India which has been machine embroidered. The spools are accessorised by two dainty pieces of Latvian lace which came from one of those three tins of haberdashery that Christmas several years ago now.
The theme for for "Looking Close… on Friday" for Friday 16th of May is "the colour orange", and I could think of no better a subject than some of my cotton spools and another entry to my growing "Embroider my World" series. This makes for a bright image – one which I hope you will like, and I hope makes you smile!
A Kurta is a knee length tunic shirt with long sleeves and a buttoned placket. It is worn as a casual garment on its own or with sleeveless jackets, for formal occasions.
Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.
