"The Keeper of Flooded Halls"
Digital composite, 2024
The Keeper of Flooded Halls explores what remains when monuments outlive their purpose. The figure inhabits a classical interior—clearly built for ceremony, for power, for the performance of social hierarchy—that has been claimed by water and roses, transformed into something between ruin and sanctuary.
I'm interested in how bodies move through spaces that were designed to dictate their movement. Classical architecture operates through scale and proportion to create specific emotional states: awe, submission, aspiration. But when those spaces flood, when nature begins its patient work of reclamation, the power dynamics shift. The figure here neither dominates nor submits—she simply persists, her crimson train echoing the roses that grow from stone.
The flooded floor creates doubling through reflection, suggesting that every monument exists in at least two states: what it is and what it mirrors, what it proclaims and what it reveals. Water is the great leveler, dissolving boundaries between floor and ceiling, between architecture's insistence and gravity's patience.
The roses function as both invasion and ornament. They haven't destroyed the classical detail—they've enhanced it, creating a new aesthetic language where human geometry and botanical curve coexist. This interests me: how beauty doesn't always destroy what came before, sometimes it simply adds layers, creating palimpsests of aesthetic systems.
The light breaking through suggests divine illumination in classical painting traditions—Caravaggio's shafts of holy light, Vermeer's domestic transcendence. But I resist assigning that light moral or spiritual meaning beyond its physical properties. It illuminates. What we make of that illumination—grace, indifference, or simply photons behaving according to physical law—remains open.
This piece belongs to multiple traditions simultaneously: Dutch interior painting's obsession with light and space, Piranesi's architectural fantasies, contemporary photography's staged scenarios (Gregory Crewdson's suburban baroque), and fashion photography's theatrical excess. I'm attempting to synthesize these into something that feels both historically grounded and urgently contemporary.
The work asks: What do we keep of our monuments? What keeps us? And when water rises and roses bloom from stone, who is the keeper—the human figure maintaining presence, or the space itself, patiently demonstrating that all our architectures are temporary?

Oh and the slab for the house and porch were cockeyed and so from this corner to the corner of the studio is 1 and a half inches different. Whoever poured the original slab didn't have a leveler. : O
Floor leveler and other compounds sealing up all the really nasty business that was hiding under the sink.
