Garrison recognizes longtime employees
By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern
KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Forty years ago, just one day after Erika Darsow left school in Zweibrucken, she landed a job with the U.S. Army.
And she’s been helping Soldiers ever since.
Darsow was among more than 40 U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern employees recognized for their length of service during a Dec. 6 ceremony held the Armstrong Club, on Vogelweh housing area. Dozens of garrison staff, family and friends joined Lt. Col. Lars Zetterstrom, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, to congratulate them.
“Your dedication and commitment to the Army is admirable and we owe you our gratitude,” Zetterstrom said.
While Darsow has held various positions over the past four decades, she’s spent the past 18 years as a purchasing agent with the garrison’s logistics directorate. When Soldiers misplace a government car key, bump a fender or run over a nail, they turn to Darsow to offer solutions that help them complete their missions.
“I try to help and we do what we can,” Darsow said. “When you can help, for me that’s good.”
In 1971, a neighbor who worked Kreuzberg Kaserne — then a U.S. installation in Zweibrucken – suggested that Darsow should start work there. Then 18, Darsow took that advice. When the post closed in 1993, Darsow migrated to Kaiserslautern. She admits, after all these years, she never really learned the Army ranks.
“You just say hello to the customer,” Darsow said. “For me, a private is the same as
anyone.”
Now a grandmother, whose son serves in the German Army, Darsow looks forward to attending local soccer games and taking vacations. Sometimes she wonders where the time has gone, she said.
“I never was thinking when I started that I would work with the Army 40 years,” Darsow said. “Not everybody can work 40 years at one place.”
During the event, Zetterstrom highlighted the contributions that civilians add to the Army’s missions.
“The dedication of our civilian work force has remained constant through changing times,” Zetterstrom said. “I’m always amazed at their perseverance in the face of the many challenges they face.”
Among the recipients was Bradford Harris, who joined the U.S. Air Force in 1961, when computers he used filled entire rooms and processed date using punch cards. After retiring at Sembach in the late 1980’s, Harris sold encyclopedias in Kaiserslautern and worked states for the U.S. census before landing a civilian job at Vogelweh’s bowling center.
“I did that same job when I was 18 back in Oklahoma,” Harris said. “My life did a complete circle.”
Soon after, the Army hired Harris for his computer skills – which he uses each day to assist colleagues within the garrison’s directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. During the ceremony, Harris was recognized for 45 years of government service.
“It makes me feel good and useful, that my talents still help people do their job,” Harris said.

Exploring Volume
Part of Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier
(May to October 2018)
The mastery with which Azzedine Alaïa invented and deployed stretch fabrics earned him the nickname the ‘King of Cling’ in the 1980s. But Alaïa’s interest in the hyper-fitted form was by no means single-minded – it expressed a fascination with exploring volume, creating sculptural shapes that could redefine a woman’s body. This idea is pushed to the extreme in these voluminous ballgowns.
These styles also underline Alaïa’s life-long fascination with fashion history and his respect for the past. These pieces re-examine the grandeur of costume in the 17th and 18th centuries, re-imagining their shapes and effects through contemporary technologies and attitudes to the body. They are not a revival, but a re-evaluation. Alaïa’s volume is achieved through intricate technique.
Echoing the work of Cristóbal Balenciaga, he seldom used internal structures such as boning or petticoats, instead exploring the qualities of the fabrics themselves to achieve deceptively complex shapes that float weightlessly around the body.
Conceived and co-curated with Monsieur Alaïa before his death in November 2017, the exhibition charts his incredible journey from sculptor to couturier, his nonconformist nature and his infectious energy for fashion, friendship and the female body.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Alaïa personally constructed each garment by hand and refused to bow to the pressures of fashion week deadlines, instead working to his own schedule. His collaborative approach earned him an esteemed client list, including Greta Garbo, Grace Jones, Michelle Obama and Rihanna.
Rather than a retrospective, the show interlaces stories of his life and career alongside personally selected garments, ranging from the rare to the iconic and spanning the early 1980s to his most recent collection in 2017.

Description
California sea lions are known for their intelligence, playfulness, and noisy barking. Their color ranges from chocolate brown in males to a lighter, golden brown in females. Males reach 850 pounds (390 kg) and seven feet (2.1 m) in length. Females grow to 220 pounds (110 kg) and up to six feet (1.8 m) in length. They have a "dog-like" face, and at around five years of age, males develop a bony bump on top of their skull called a sagittal crest. The top of a male's head often gets lighter in color with age. These members of the otariid or walking seal family have external ear flaps and large flippers that they use to "walk" on land. The trained "seals" in zoos and aquariums are usually California sea lions.
Range/Habitat
California sea lions are found from Vancouver Island, British Columbia to the southern tip of Baja California in Mexico. They breed mainly on offshore islands, ranging from southern California's Channel Islands south to Mexico, although a few pups have been born on Año Nuevo and the Farallon Islands in central California. There is a distinct population of California sea lions at the Galapagos Islands. A third population in the Sea of Japan became extinct, probably during World War II.
Mating/Breeding
Most pups are born in June or July and weigh 13 to 20 pounds (6 to 9 kg). They nurse for at least five to six months and sometimes over a year. Mothers recognize pups on crowded rookeries through smell and vocalizations. Pups also learn to recognize the smell and vocalizations of their mothers. Breeding takes place a few weeks after birth. Males patrol territories and bark almost continuously during the breeding season.
Behavior
California sea lions are very social animals, and groups often rest closely packed together at favored haul-out sites on land or float together on the ocean's surface in "rafts." They are sometimes seen "porpoising," or jumping out of the water, presumably to speed up their swimming. Sea lions have also been seen "surfing" breaking waves. California sea lions are opportunistic eaters, feeding on squid, octopus, herring, rockfish, mackerel, and small sharks. In turn, sea lions are preyed upon by Orcas (killer whales) and great white sharks.
Status
Their population is growing steadily, and California sea lions can be seen in many coastal spots such as the Monterey Coast Guard jetty and PIER 39 in San Francisco. The current population is approximately 238,000.
At The Marine Mammal Center
California sea lions are our most common patients at The Marine Mammal Center. In 2009, we admitted over 1700 animals. Nearly 1400 of these were California sea lions. The most common reasons California sea lions are rescued include: malnutrition, domoic acid toxicosis, leptospirosis, cancer, pneumonia, entanglement in debris or fishing gear, gunshots, and other wounds. In 2009, many of the sea lions that stranded were malnourished yearlings. Animals can become severely underweight from maternal separation, disease, lack of food sources, effects of El Niño and other environmental factors. In 1998, the Center diagnosed the first case of domoic acid toxicosis in marine mammals; a condition caused by harmful algal blooms which causes the animals to have seizures. Although the Center has conducted extensive studies to better understand this disease, hundreds of sea lions are affected annually. (Source: Marine Mammal Center 2015: www.marinemammalcenter.org/)

The length of a journey is always in your mind, timeless as you tell it, echoing off the walls of the introduction and epilogue. The best ones end too soon, they don't know the meaning of outstaying their welcome. Susy is all energy to me, unfailing brightness and love beyond expectation. It's hard to explain that elemental intensity, the depth of heart that no one ever equals. I feel a whole lot more like me when she's around. I get caught up, for what it's worth, twisted around a daydream that feels just as good as any that come while sleeping. Hours of thundering tires from two lovers steadily wandering, meals in dark restaurants, exploring busy corners of big cities and forgotten country roads. I'm never alone with my thoughts, even when the sound of your voice is 1,700 miles away. I hear you here, in the land of kilometers, whispering my name. Until next time, my love. Te amo, or if you prefer, ik hou van jou.

This my third SP attempt in B/W today. This has to be a better "corporate directory photo" than the other two. (Especially the second!)
Do you like it better? I don't think it is awful for an arms-length SP.
Length 9 to 14 mm. The Green Jewel Bug is extremely variable in coloration, ranging from metallic green to purplish-blue. Some specimens have an orange stripe across the shield-like scutellum.

Ocellaris clownfish
The Ocellaris Clownfish, Clownfish or False Percula Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is a popular aquarium fish. It is very closely related to A. percula, the Orange Clownfish or "True Percula Clownfish", and often lives in association with the sea anemone Heteractis magnifica, using them for shelter and protection. Generally, Ocellaris clownfish are hardier, and slightly less aggressive than its Percula counterpart. Both species are found in coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the Fiji and Tonga regions.
This clown anemonefish can be recognised by its orange colour with three white bars and black markings on the fins. It grows to about eight centimeters (three inches) in length. One can differentiate between Percula (true) and Ocellaris (false) by their respective colors and patterns. Ocellaris are usually less vibrantly colored, and have 11 dorsal fin-spines instead of 10, as on the Percula. Also, the species have different eye arrangements: Percula have bright orange irises, making their eyes appear smaller, whereas Ocellaris have grey/orange irises which make the species eyes appear bigger.
There is a rare melanistic variety hailing from the reefs around Darwin, Australia, that is a darker colour with the normal white stripes. Although not common in the wild, they are becoming more and more popular in the aquarium hobby.
Phylogeny:
The species Amphiprion ocellaris are related to the class Osteichthyes which contains bony fish and ray-finned fish. A. ocellaris is the most basal species in the genus Amphiprion which is closely related to the genera Premnas. The species' most closely related ancestor is Amphiprion percula, the Orange Clownfish. It is thought that A. ocellaris specialized after diverging from the Premnas genus, and scientific evidence confirms that all clownfish belonging to the genus Amphiprion could withstand the stings of only one type of anemone, after further diverging the 28 different species of clownfish including A. ocellaris specialized to be able to resist the poisonous stings of many different species.
Analogous structures:
Clownfish have many structures which are analogous with other species, the distinctive stripes found on the clownfish can be seen in few animals. Lampropeltis triangulum elapsoidesor otherwise known as the Scarlet King Snake has a well-defined pattern of red, black and yellow bands. These two structures both have characterises that are similar in use, the bands of each species help warn off predators if the animal is in danger. These bands also help camouflage both organisms in each of their different environments. The bright orange base striped with white found on the clownfish allows it to be undetected in its surroundings of fluorescent corals and anemones.
Homologous structures:
All fish have a mucus membrane surrounding their scales. The mucus usually contains high amounts of lipids and glycoproteins; however, the family Pomacentridae (anemone fish) have a special adaptation where the mucus coating the species is a great deal thicker. Also the protective layer lacks a specific substance that triggers nematocysts (the stings of an anemone); this allows the fish immunity against the toxic stings. Little is known about the mucus except that it is a genetically inherited trait and passed through the generations of each species. In other families of fish, the mucus is used as protection against harmful bacteria, an osmotic regulator and also aids the fish in nest making. The difference in mucuses has led to the divergent path of anemone fish and other species.
Clownfish are initially male; the largest fish in a group becomes female.
Popular culture:
he 2003 Disney/Pixar film, Finding Nemo featured the clown fish duo, Nemo (voiced by Alexander Gould) a juvenile clownfish, the title character/Marlin's son, and Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks) as Nemo's overprotective father.

Also called Wat Maha Photharam, Wat Jed Yod ("Temple of the Seven Spires") is one of the city's most elegant sites, though it is located northwest of the center, beside the Superhighway. The chedi was built during the reign of King Tilokkarat in the late 15th century (his remains are in one of the other chedis), and, in 1477, the World Sangkayana convened here to revise the doctrines of the Buddha.
The unusual design of the main rectangular chedi with seven peaks was copied from the Maha Bodhi Temple in Bodhgaya, India, where the Buddha first achieved enlightenment. The temple also has architectural elements reflecting Burmese and early Chinese influences supposed to date back to the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The extraordinary proportions; the angelic, levitating devata (Buddhist spirits) figures carved into the base of the chedi; and the juxtaposition of the other buildings make Wat Jed Yod a masterpiece.

ANSBACH, Germany - German and American civilian employees were honored for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service to the U.S. Army in a ceremony prior to a Town hall here, Feb. 23 in the Katterbach Theater on Bismark Kaserne.
In total, the honored employees - coupled with those not present at the ceremony - have racked up more than 900 years of service in support of the U.S. Army.
Col. Benjamin Jones, commander of the U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach (USAG Ansbach), speaking to the more than 200 family members, fellow employees and well-wishers as well as the participants, highlighted the importance of the civilian workforce in supporting the Soldiers' missions, and what the many contributions they make to providing stability and quality of life services to service members stationed in the Ansbach and Illesheim communities.
"You're an outstanding credit to USAG Ansbach, and to the U.S. military in Europe." said Jones, "For me, our professional workforce in Ansbach - German and American - truly embodies the tenants of the Army's Civilian Creed: Dedication to our Army, our Soldiers and Civilians; support of the mission; and providing the stability and continuity that enable Soldiers to concentrate on their missions, which is of special importance to Soldiers serving overseas, where so much surrounding them can appear new and unfamiliar when they first arrive in country.
Jones was unstinting in his praise for the awardees. "We would be hard-pressed to complete the Army mission without you. Know that the Soldiers of this community rely on you, appreciate you, and everything you do in support of them, and their families."
Also in attendance were Ansbach Mayor Thomas Deffner and Burgermeister Heinrich Förster from Illesheim who presented certificates to honor the awardees.

The tour to reach the lookout balcony of the majestic Devil’s Throat allows visitors to approach a few meters from the most important and mighty waterfall of the Iguazu Falls, whose image has traveled all around the world, similar to a giant funnel that swallows the planet. The itinerary begins about 1,100 meters before the monumental fall, after getting off the Ecological Jungle Train at Devil’s Throat Station, which was designed with the purpose of generating the least possible environmental impact. There, you can begin enjoying the environment that the Iguazu River and its small islands offer, actually a refuge of countless and picturesque deep blue jays. The gangway leading to the balcony that faces the waterfall is just over a kilometer in length, is safe and quiet, either on wheelchair or by walking, due to the absence of obstacles and its absolutely flat character. The end of the tour, at the balcony, gives us a magical and unique moment, staring at a huge wall of water over 80 meters high, located on the border of Argentina and the sister Republic of Brazil. The folding system of gangways was designed to preserve them from being damaged due to an important increase in the flow of Iguazu River. In normal circumstances, when the river is low, the railings are raised and the gangways allow the people get to the Balcony of the Devil's Throat. When the river increases its flow, railings are fold to allow the flow to pass through, by reducing the resistance, and thereby also enabling to pass a trunk floating above. And if the river level is very high, the flow velocity increases, and that is the moment when the gangways detach themselves, to avoid compromising the concrete structure. Once the flow is down again, all the structure is reset. When this process eventually occurs, access is not enabled for people, but the Iguazu National Park never closes its doors, and those who are visiting us, can come to enjoy the splendor that acquire the rest of the falls when the river rises, due to an unusual majesty that can only be appreciated in opportunities like these. This system of gangways and security, proposed and approved by the National Parks Administration was possible because of the replacement of all the old wood gangways by these current ones, characterized by an ecological architectural development, and specially designed for for structural piles safeguard, preventing the circuit being closed long periods of time, as occured decades before.
