Adults of Plagiognathus arbustorum can reach a length of 3.6–4.5 millimetres (0.14–0.18 in). These small mirids show a rather variable color, ranging from almost black to pale olive-green. Usually the head and the pronotum, the 1st and 2nd antennal segments and the margins of the hind femora are wholly dark. Forewings and pronotum are covered in dark hairs. The nymphs are green, with a black drawing on the legs.

Adults of these mirids can be found from July to October. They are polyphagous, usually feeding on many different herbaceous plants, but especially on Urticaceae, Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae and Apiaceae species.

Both adults and the nymphs prefer to suck on the buds, on flowers and immature fruits of their host plants. They feed occasionally on aphids and honeydew.

At 36 rue Vaugirard remains under the arcades a vestige of the post-revolutionary period. On March 26, 1791, the Academy of Sciences defined for the first time the meter as the ten millionth part of a quarter of terrestrial meridian, a quarter circle connecting one of the two poles to the equator.

This new unit of measurement wanted by the revolutionaries was to replace the old ones such as the thumb and the foot which often had for reference the king and which varied from one region to another. The Convention definitively adopted the meter as a unit of official length on April 7, 1795. Between February 1796 and December 1797, 16 meters stallions engraved in marble were placed in the busiest places of Paris in order to familiarize the Parisians with this new unit. measured. There are only two left today, that of 36 rue Vaugirard is the only one that remained in its original location, the second is located at 13 Place Vendôme.

One source says the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains range is about 1,000 km (620 mi) in length. Its highest point is 7,090 m (23,260 ft) located 100 km (62 mi) to the northwest of Lhasa. The range is parallel to the Himalayas in the Transhimalayas, and north of the Brahmaputra River. [3] Another source says the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains extend 460 miles (740 km) from Nyêmo County in the west to Ranwu County (the southwestern part of Baxoi County) in the east.

Its highest peak is Mount Nyenchen Tanglha (Nyainqêntanglha Feng) at 7,162 metres (23,497 ft).[4]

The southern side of the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains is precipitous, and falls by around 2,000 metres (6,600 ft), while the northern side is fairly level and descends about 1,000 metres (3,300 ft). Most of the mountains are below 6,500 metres (21,300 ft).[5] They contain 7080 glaciers covering an area of 10,700 square kilometres (4,100 sq mi).[4]

The Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains have an average latitude of 30°30'N and a longitude between 90°E and 97°E. Together with the Gangdise Shan located further west, it forms the Transhimalaya [a] which runs parallel to the Himalayas north of the Yarlung Tsangpo River.

The Drukla Chu river rises in the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, where it is called the Song Chu river, and joins the Gyamda Chu river. The combined rivers run about 100 kilometres (62 mi) southeast to the Yarlung Tsangpo river.

The Arno is a river in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is the most important river of central Italy after the Tiber.

The river originates on Monte Falterona in the Casentino area of the Apennines, and initially takes a southward curve. The river turns to the west near Arezzo passing through Florence, Empoli and Pisa, flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea at Marina di Pisa.

With a length of 241 kilometres, it is the largest river in the region. It has many tributaries: Sieve at 60 kilometres long, Bisenzio at 49 kilometres, Ombrone Pistoiese at 47 kilometres, and the Era, Elsa, Pesa, and Pescia. The drainage basin amounts to more than 8,200 square kilometre and drains the waters of the following subbasins:

The Casentino, in the province of Arezzo, formed by the upper course of the river until its confluence with the Maestro della Chiana channel.

The Val di Chiana, a plain drained in the 18th century, which until then had been a marshy area tributary of the Tiber.

The upper Valdarno, a long valley bordered on the east by the Pratomagno massif and on the west by the hills around Siena.

The Sieve's basin, which flows into the Arno immediately before Florence.

The middle Valdarno, with the plain including Florence, Sesto Fiorentino, Prato, and Pistoia.

The lower Valdarno, with the valley of important tributaries such as the Pesa, Elsa, and Era and in which, after Pontedera, the Arno flows into the Ligurian Sea. The river has a very variable discharge, ranging from about 6 cubic metres per second to more than 2,000 cubic metres per second. The mouth of the river was once near Pisa but is now several kilometres westwards.

It crosses Florence, where it passes below the Ponte Vecchio and the Santa Trinita bridge (built by Bartolomeo Ammannati but inspired by Michelangelo). The river flooded this city regularly in historical times, most recently in 1966, with 4,500 cubic metres per second after rainfall of 437.2 millimetres in Badia Agnano and 190 millimetres in Florence, in only 24 hours.

Before Pisa, the Arno is crossed by the Imperial Canal at La Botte. This water channel passes under the Arno through a tunnel, and serves to drain the former area of the Lago di Bientina, which was once the largest lake in Tuscany before its reclamation.

The flow rate of the Arno is irregular. It is sometimes described as having a torrentlike behaviour, because it can easily go from almost dry to near flood in a few days. At the point where the Arno leaves the Apennines, flow measurements can vary between 0.56 and 3,540 cubic metres per second. New dams built upstream of Florence have greatly alleviated the problem in recent years.

The flood on November 4, 1966 collapsed the embankment in Florence, killing at least 40 people and damaging or destroying millions of works of art and rare books. New conservation techniques were inspired by the disaster, but even decades later hundreds of works still await restoration.

Length 10-23 mm. Green-coloured but often with brown wings and sometimes entirely brown coloured. Pronotal side-keels only very slightly incurved. Some adult females are a vivid pinkish purple. Males are long-winged, while females are usually short-winged.

Mallards (male).

They inhabit ponds, lakes and marshes. Semi-domesticated birds may be found on almost any body of water.

They range from Alaska east to Quebec and south to southern California, Virginia, Texas and northern Mexico. They winter throught the United States south to Central America and the West Indies. They are also in Eurasia.

RHS Hyde Hall, Rettendon, Essex

Over many years I have posted images taken at RHS Hyde Hall and this is a continuation of a series called ‘A Day in the Life’. As the title suggests I’m posting what I think are the best photographs taken on that particular day.

This is the first day I have been able to stay out for any length of time since my illness which occurred last May. The weather was perfect, all good.

Galapagos Islands

Four sub species, each one of different length and found on different islands.

The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus), also known as the sea iguana, saltwater iguana, or Galápagos marine iguana, is a species of iguana found only on the Galápagos Islands. Unique among modern lizards, it is a marine reptile that has the ability to forage in the sea for algae, which makes up almost all of its diet. Marine iguanas are the only extant lizard that spends time in a marine environment. Large males are able to dive to find this food source, while females and smaller males feed during low tide in the intertidal zone. They mainly live in colonies on rocky shores where they bask after visiting the relatively cold water or intertidal zone, but can also be seen in marshes, mangrove swamps and beaches. Large males defend territories for a short period, but smaller males have other breeding strategies. After mating, the female digs a nest hole in the soil where she lays her eggs, leaving them to hatch on their own a few months later.

The Afon Glaslyn is a river in Gwynedd, north west Wales.

While not of great significance in terms of its length, it is one of Gwynedd's primary Rivers, and has greatly influenced the landscape in which it flows. It has its source in Glaslyn, a cirque lake on the flanks of Snowdon.

These are small solitary wasps, the length of which does not exceed 10 mm. and are called cuckoo wasps, because they lay their eggs in the nests of solitary bees. After hatching the larvae will feed with the eggs and food supply of the host insect

The pygmy seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti) measure less than one inch in length (2 cm), and is naturally well camouflaged and extremely difficult to see amongst the gorgonian coral it lives on. The relationship between a pygmy seahorse and its host sea-fan is non-invasive and non-parasitic, serving only to shelter the diminutive seahorse. There are two known color variations, grey with red tubercles and yellow with orange tubercles. It is unknown whether or not, though speculated that, these color varieties are linked to specific host gorgonians (corals). (Wikipedia)

Leucojum aestivum is a perennial bulbous plant, generally 35–60 cm tall, but some forms reach 90 cm. Its leaves, which are well developed at the time of flowering, are strap-shaped, 5–20 mm wide, reaching to about the same height as the flowers. The flowering stem (scape) is hollow and has wings with translucent margins. The pendant flowers appear in late spring and are borne in umbels of usually three to five, sometimes as many as seven. The flower stalks (pedicels are of different lengths, 25–70 mm long. The flowers are about 3–4 cm in diameter and have six white tepals, each with a greenish mark just below the tip. The black seeds are 5–7 mm long.

After flowering, the fruits develop flotation chambers but remain attached to the stem. In England, it has been recorded that flooding causes the stems to break and the fruits to be carried downstream and stranded in river debris or on flood-plains. The bulbs can also be transported during heavy floods and deposited on river banks. (Wikipedia)

The Long Corridor is a covered walkway in the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. The total length of the Long Corridor is 728 metres and it is decorated with more than 14,000 paintings, especially on the ceiling and its beams, which divide it into 273 sections. Along the corridor there are four octagonal pavilions. Each of these pavilions symbolises the four climatic seasons of the year. The more than 14,000 paintings have a wide variety of subjects: historical figures, famous buildings, landscapes, flowers, birds, fish, insects... Of particular importance are those depicting folk and traditional tales, fables and episodes from classical Chinese literature. As a part of the Summer Palace, the Long Corridor was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December, 1998.

There is no doubt that the Long Corridor is a beautiful place during the day. But it is at night, with the arrival of darkness and the lighting of the chinese lanterns, that it reaches its true splendour, creating a special atmosphere and transforming into a long, luminous and sinuous thread in the midst of the darkness. It is at night when it becomes a magical place, where stories, tales, fables, imagination... come to life and arise. Dreams and tales, in the middle of the night and darkness.

Description

Length 9 mm. A very handsome species which should be unmistakable. Although striking, it does bear a superficial resemblance to the red and black ground bugs (Lygaeidae); be sure to rule out Arocatus longiceps, which has recently been recorded in south-east England, as well as Pyrrhocoris apterus. In addition to the distinctive markings, C. hyoscyami is further distinguished by its hairiness and the numerous veins in the apical wing membrane, characteristic of all Rhopalidae. Nymphs are yellow/red-brown in colour and also rather hairy.

Herkenning - 8.5--10.3 mm.

Sandhill Crane.

Between 34 to 48 inches in length with a wingspan of nearly 7 feet. They are very tall with a long neck and long legs. Largely gray with a red forehead. Juveniles browner with no red on head. Plumage often appears a rusty color because of iron stains from water of ponds or marshes.

They inhabit large freshwater marshes, prairie ponds and marshy tundra. They are also on prairies and grain fields during migration and in winter.

They range from Siberia and Alaska east across arctic Canada to the Hudson Bay and south to western Ontario. There are isolated populations in the Rocky Mountians, northern prairies, and the Great Lakes region along with in Mississippi, Georgia and Florida. They winter in California's Central Valley and across the southern states from Arizona to Florida. They can also be found in Cuba.
