New online sketch class, 1st page of a brand new journal (Strathmore series 500 hardbound for mixed media), new minimum palette (as close to Liz's as I could come with paints I have) and I'm starting 7 weeks behind schedule. Thank goodness Liz will keep the lessons online for a year! Happy New year of artistic pursuits! It took me way too long to settle on the minimal kit, but was very important to accomplish! I rushed the page being determined to get lesson 1 done asap so I can try to make up for the weeks of lost time, if possible. Frustrated to be starting so far behind and doubt I'll connect with other students who will be working on different lessons. A special circumstance did not allow me to begin at the start. Glad to have now begun on this first day of 2015! Thankful for this experience, it's a blessing. Also... I was trying to place paints same as Liz, and have since realized this is the wrong placement for ME, since I am not lefthanded. Once I've settled on 6 colors they will be arranged differently, (yellows at top, then reds and blues)which may morph again!
Boy, I'd better turn around at take a quick glance behind, I am again near the colorful parking in LeftHand Canyon where I stopped and explored. Here is another great color shot along LeftHand stream here so I kept at it! The color while aimed east was almost as bright as my backlit shots but that is really hard. This is more color over by LeftHand Stream and here is another good example in LeftHand Canyon. This was shot up the winding canyon next to LeftHand Stream at my right. I think that I better get another move on and keep poking around for more possibilities.
Boy does autumn always look when their "cloaking" device activated! Sometimes it takes more than on trip to find the autumn color. The flat lands will be coughing up it's color after this.
I am directly down below my unfinished narrow gauge trek. The grade is up the mountain side, nearly ninety degrees to the left of the frame. The color here beats that up on the Switzerland Trail narrow gauge railroad grade although the grade sneaks across this canyon well above here past the Puzzler, at Bloomerville, near its head . This season's color was bit thready probably because of our dry summer. When is Colorado ever really wet? Beside all that, the road is paved down here even though there is limited traffic along LeftHand Canyon. Still, it beats driving the flood-wrecked Jamestown route. We tried that a month ago and will wait for another year.

The bassist often had to check what chords the guitarist was playing, because he was a last minute replacement for the regular bassist, who got sick.
I love this picture. This is Queen Paola of Belgium. Next time the wind blows she should let go of her hat, and try to hang on to her royal dignity instead!

I love cooking and baking and because I walk and cycle everyday it gives me a perfect excuse to indulge in copious cups of tea or coffee and home baked delights. But, for a couple of weeks I can't use my right arm, surgery to my shoulder, so no cycling, agh! Walking is OK without my trusty back-pack but cooking has become a challenge! This is the cake I baked using my left hand only at midnight as I could not sleep due to my shoulder, all I can say is thank goodness for my huge mixing bowl and a hand held electric stick whisk. Cherry and apricot, apple almond cake and it is sooooooooo yummy and if anyone is interested.......
100g Self raising flour
100g Ground almonds
200g Stork
100g Golden castor sugar
100g Dark Muscovado sugar
3 large eggs
80g Dried soft cherries soaked in tea
80g Dried soft apricots soaked in tea
80g Home made apple compote
1 teaspoon baking powder
splash of milk
Bake in a medium oven for approximately one hour and serve with creamy greek yogurt and a steaming pot of my favourite tea

Taken on a rainy Saturday - that became a noisy one not long after...
During my engineer training at "BN University" (in the basement of 176 East Fifth Street in St.Paul) I had three weekends to rent a car and discover Minnesota. First priority, on the first weekend, was to see this epicenter of my beloved Soo Line and to, as displayed in an earlier posting, settle my grudge with the "Dolly Sisters." The second weekend I followed the Soo through Dresser and up to Duluth, taking my sweet time as I figured there wasn't much to see in Duluth anyway. When I got there with barely enough time to take in the ROC Buffet before returning to BNU, I decided that the next weekend would be simply planned: GET to Duluth! One place that was quickly discovered was Munger, northwest of Proctor Yard on the Missabe, where this DM&IR southbound ore train passes at 1050 behind three SD9 (170-143-130) crossing under the DW&P bridge. Missabe was double track (evidently with a northbound siding - Missabe was run lefthanded) and stalwart devotees of Duluth rail scenes will note that there was a whole lot LESS foliage! And as noted below, raw ore was served up willingly. I had no idea that years later I'd drive miles to record the passing of a raw ore train on Wisconsin Central's revival of Soo Line's Duluth-Chiago mainline.
