With their final consist build, the A&O departs south through Berkley Run Junction. Here, the CSX Mountain Subdivision ends and the train will continue its journey over the Cowen Subdivision, a CSX line on long-term lease to the A&O.
Bad Essen is a small municipality and health resort in the district of Osnabrück, in Lower Saxony. Bad Essen with its historical centre is located on the German Timber-Frame Road.
The "Old Water Mill," formerly called "Wedersmol," as the court mill of the Maierhof is named in 1359 in a fief register of the bishop's court of the Osnabrück cathedral chapter.
This fief register listed regular compulsory levies on grain meal.
The mill building as it still stands today is said to have been rebuilt around 1780. There is still a correspondence from this time about disputes between the "Meyer zu Essen" and the peasantry Essen around the mill pond.
After the abolition of the mill constraint in 1831, the Hofwassermühle was probably also freely leased.
Until 1880 it was managed by a miller named Bosse. Then lay still for a long time until miller Pieper took over. The miller Pieper also built a steam engine, above the mill at the mill pond, to drive the probably two grinding courses in case of lack of water.
The city of Essen became Bad-Essen in 1902, and got a station of the Wittlager district railway. The miller Pieper promised an economic upturn and built a new mill with roller grinding chairs and machine drive near the station.
miller Pieper gave up the mills in Bad-Essen in 1905 and emigrated to the Poznan area.
This was the opportunity for the miller Hinrich Melcher to take over the mill.
His son Wilhelm then took over milling and operated the "Old Water Mill" until 1935 for feed meal.
The mill was donated in 1948 by the last Meyerhof heir to the municipality of Bad-Essen.

Steel train 48962 runs practically every day from Linz steelworks to Dingolfing and on to Ingolstadt. This connection transports sheet metal coils for car production to the plants and production waste for melting down at Voest Alpine. The standard locomotive for this train is CargoServ's 193 250, which also advertises for the client. On 10 October 2021, I was able to photograph the service shortly after Kallham in Upper Austria.
After uploading my shot the other day of the Detour Qualifying Train at South Royalton, I figured I should take some time to shoot the real moves. The sole purpose of going all the way up there is not for the mediocre leased power, but to document some daylight freight trains in places on the former CV mainline that I have scoped out from onboard for quite some time. Here we see yesterday's BDRD detour crossing the Winooski River into Williston, VT on the NECR Roxbury Subdivision.

At the time of recording, the 193 710 was leased to TXLogistik by BRLL. The Vectron commemorates the 140th anniversary of electric locomotive construction at Siemens, which took place a few years ago. On 19 July 2025, it hauled the intermodal train DGS 40566 from Verona Q.E. to Padborg, and I was able to photograph it at Götzenhof in eastern Hesse.
[..CSX..] train Q372-17 was eastbound at Bush Street in Charm City with unusually clean EMD SD70AH-T4 8908 as the rear DPU.
in 2023 CSX did not renew the lease on its modest fleet of 10 and they have left the railroad for Progress Rail and can now be found in Mexico on lease.
I was at the riparian preserve yesterday and there were a few photographers standing around (all socially distanced, of course) and one guy points to theses little shore birds and asks what they are. I said, "those are least sandpipers". There was a long pause and then the guy asks, "So what's the advantage of leasing a sandpiper vs. buying one? 😂" Funny guy

Burlington Northern train 153 was rolling west on BN's East End in Berwyn in the winter of 1995.
Powered by 2 of the 100 LMX B39-8Es leased by BN, the LMX power was synonymous with Burlington Northern's roster in the late 1980s through the early 2000s.
The LMX motors have since been scattered across the country after coming off lease.

ILSX 1339 and 1303 sit outside of the Independent Locomotive Service shop south of Holt along the Minnesota Northern. ILSX 1339 usually works the trackage rights duties from Thief River Falls to Crookston for the Minnesota Northern, and ILSX 1303 is a former Alstom leaser, now ILS leaser. There is always something interesting at the shop here.
With dynamic brakes whining hard into the steep descent into Port Alfred, CN SD40u 6006 is at the helm of Roberval & Saguenay 2nd mainline run operating between Rio Tinto's Arvida Aluminium plant and Port Alfred, a distance of just over 18 miles.
CN leased 6006 and 6021 along with BLE 908 to RS a few months before. Plagued with mechanical issues since the beginning, 6021 is still in the shop in Arvida and 908 cannot lead anymore after suffering cab heating issues.
It is quite a show watching and hearing 645s prime movers and K3 horn over this spectacular piece of track built more than 115 years ago.

Another shot from back in October 2010, and we see the westbound Paynesville Sub wayfreight at the MP 110 curve east of Sedan, MN behind a leased HLCX SD60. This power held this assignment for only a short time before it was back to the usual pair of CP/SOO Geeps.

Much like last year passenger season started with the ARR short on power. So when the barge arrived in Whittier with three leased UP SD70Ms it was a welcome relief. Before they could be put to use they would need to see some shop time. Seen here on their way to Anchorage at Potter. In the background are the Kenai Mountains. 5.22.25

EU07-1510 with Express InterCity train 3550 "Giewont" to Gdynia Główna leaves Zakopane station. During summer season PKP Intercity often uses the short term lease of locomotives to assure the traction for increased number of services daily. And usually it's PKP Cargo that offers the locomotives for PKP Intercity. June 23, 2019.
