WM 7471 leads the 5pm NPE northbound trip from Owosso to Ashley. Blinding snow and bitter cold made for a long but well worth wait. SRI is leasing 7471 and 57 from PNLX for the season while PM 1225 gets some fresh wheel work.

After uploading my shot the other day of the Detour Qualifying Train at South Royalton, I figured I should take some time to shoot the real moves. The sole purpose of going all the way up there is not for the mediocre leased power, but to document some daylight freight trains in places on the former CV mainline that I have scoped out from onboard for quite some time. Here we see yesterday's BDRD detour crossing the Winooski River into Williston, VT on the NECR Roxbury Subdivision.

Rolling west on the old C&NW Butler freight line near West Allis (suburban Milwaukee), Wisconsin on New Year’s Eve 1997 - A pair of leased Amtrak F40PH locomotives are in the consist of Union Pacific train PRBU.
The Wisconsin Central also tried out a few of these then surplus Amtrak units in early 1998 with an option to purchase, but the unusual arrangement did not last long for either railroad. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©

Der Neuwagentransport DGS 46664 von Kecskemet nach Zeebrugge Ramskapelle musste am 28. Mai 2023 ebenfalls über Landshut umgeleitet werden. Es führte die von der Rurtalbahn Cargo bei ELL angemietete 193 249. Deren Seitenwerbung weist auf die Kooperation mit dem Automobillogistiker ARS Altmann hin. Bei Wallersdorf konnte ich den mit Produkten des Herstellers Mercedes-Benz beladenen Zug aufnehmen.
The new car transport DGS 46664 Kecskemet to Zeebrugge Ramskapelle also had to be rerouted via Landshut on May 28, 2023. It was hauled by the 193 249 leased from ELL by Rurtalbahn Cargo, whose side advertising indicates the cooperation with the automobile logistics company ARS Altmann. Near Wallersdorf, I was able to photograph the train loaded with products of the manufacturer Mercedes-Benz.
The fifth image in this series of images I took in and around downtown Toronto. The tall ship Empire Sandy, which runs chartered tours along Toronto's waterfront was originally built as an Englishman/ Larch Deep Sea-class tugboat for war service by the British government in 1943. After the war she served a number of different roles under different names. In the early 1970s she was to be sold for scrap, but fortunately got a new lease on life when she was bought by a new owner who had her completely rebuilt and converted as a three-masted schooner in the style of the 1880s.

This DC-9 was operated by Pan Adria for less than a year, 1973-74. Bought by Inex-Adria in 1974.
I was at the riparian preserve yesterday and there were a few photographers standing around (all socially distanced, of course) and one guy points to theses little shore birds and asks what they are. I said, "those are least sandpipers". There was a long pause and then the guy asks, "So what's the advantage of leasing a sandpiper vs. buying one? 😂" Funny guy
Led by a pair of leased UP SD70Ms, the westbound Rocky Mountaineer approaches Tunnel 1 as they prepare to enter the tunnel district.
Coasting on dynamic braking since two miles, CN 6006 East is passing milepost 14 on Roberval & Saguenay's ARPA subdivision, bringing empty Bauxite service hoppers toward Port Alfred for reloading. The steep descent into Port Alfred is truly spectacular as the ARPA subdivision twist and curve in order to ease up the grade for both eastbound and westbound runs with grade in excess of 2%. Air brake are mandatory for eastbounds and prayers, for westbounds as trains are down to their knees while fighting their way with loads bound for Rio Tinto's Arvida plant.

With dynamic brakes whining hard into the steep descent into Port Alfred, CN SD40u 6006 is at the helm of Roberval & Saguenay 2nd mainline run operating between Rio Tinto's Arvida Aluminium plant and Port Alfred, a distance of just over 18 miles.
CN leased 6006 and 6021 along with BLE 908 to RS a few months before. Plagued with mechanical issues since the beginning, 6021 is still in the shop in Arvida and 908 cannot lead anymore after suffering cab heating issues.
It is quite a show watching and hearing 645s prime movers and K3 horn over this spectacular piece of track built more than 115 years ago.

Burlington Northern train 153 was rolling west on BN's East End in Berwyn in the winter of 1995.
Powered by 2 of the 100 LMX B39-8Es leased by BN, the LMX power was synonymous with Burlington Northern's roster in the late 1980s through the early 2000s.
The LMX motors have since been scattered across the country after coming off lease.
The aroma of fresh paint wafts through Provo Yard as Utah Railway SD40 No. 9001 awaits its first assignment for the 79-year old coal hauler. It was built Chesapeake & Ohio SD40 No. 7523 by EMD in July 1970.
Something of a record shot but, when the light's right, you have to grab the opportunity.
UK Rail Leasing's locomotive and rolling stock engineering facility is the main subject of this one taken from a hotel window in Leicester's city centre. On 'shed' are a couple of class 57s, units 57306 (left) and 57310, while other locomotives are dotted round the site, including a pair of class 37s, a class 47, and another class 57 - they are the visible ones anyway.
In the foreground is the architecturally interesting Swain Street bridge, and just below that the northern platform ends of Leicester's station. In the background can be seen the elegant lines and steeple of St Saviour's Church - Grade II Listed but sadly closed back in 2005.
This patch of rich autumnal sunlight lasted in various shapes for around 30 minutes with the dark shadow in the background advancing at little more than walking place on this almost windless day.
I'd actually planned the shot to include a passing container train but, while the execution went to plan, the result was just too cluttered for my liking.

The Buckingham Branch RR leasing of a former Western Maryland SD40 has been causing quite a stir. Here the crew has finished building their train at Staunton and is passing the old C&O station as they leave for Clifton Forge. It is kind of ironic there is three former Chessie cabooses with WM sub-lettering that surround the freight station end of the complex. The cabooses have been here for years as the freight station is a popular RR-themed restaurant. Amtrak's three day a week Cardinal train calls on the station each Sunday-Wednesday and Friday.
CSX Q213 is powered by a pair of HLCX SD40-2 series units wearing their previous owner's attire. HLCX 9041 drifts south with the last remnants of a setting sun at Red Oak, Georgia in November of 2004 on the A&WP/WofA Sub. (Slide Scan)

Auch der Vectron Dual Mode aus dem Hause Siemens wird inzwischen von diversen EVUs eingesetzt. RheinCargo hat beispielsweise die 248 014 von Northrail angemietet. Am 06. März 2025 war die Lok vor einem Ganzzug bestehend aus Chemiekesselwagen bei Dietfurt im Altmühltal zu beobachten.
The Vectron Dual Mode from Siemens is now also used by various rail transport companies. RheinCargo, for example, has leased the 248 014 from Northrail. On 6 March 2025, the locomotive was seen in front of a block train consisting of chemical tank wagons near Dietfurt in the Altmühl Valley.
ILSX 1339 and 1303 sit outside of the Independent Locomotive Service shop south of Holt along the Minnesota Northern. ILSX 1339 usually works the trackage rights duties from Thief River Falls to Crookston for the Minnesota Northern, and ILSX 1303 is a former Alstom leaser, now ILS leaser. There is always something interesting at the shop here.
Leaser to CN, GMTX 2260 leads CN Edmundston local 578, running around their train after doing some switching at Grand Falls, New Brunswick. We arrived here just in time, to witness the awesome sunset gleaming behind the train.

A few weeks ago when I was headed up toward Proctor to look for the AAPRCO special the road took me along the old Green Mountain Railroad as I traveled up VT Route 103. I knew it was a about the time 263 usually headed down the mountain on it's trek east from Rutland and figured I'd keep my eyes and ears peeled for them. I had no idea if they had decent power and then when I heard them through the woods I couldn't see so turned around and headed back to a simple classic location.
Alas this is what showed up, a blue leaser on the point with a burned out ditch light to boot. Not much to look at this day...but at least the weather was perfect. So I grabbed this for posterity then headed on my way north and west.
Vermont Railway train 263 is at MP B13.5 on the Green Mountain Railroad's Bellows Falls Subdivision (ex Rutland) mainline crossing aptly named Depot Street and the old 1871 brick depot (built by the Vermont Central during the time period that road was leading the Rutland).

Housatonic Railroad train NX-12 is making their Sunday turn from Canaan to New Milford and back. They have six cars behind them as they curl through the woods approaching the New Milford River Trail crossing at about MP 13.7 on the old New Haven Berkshire Line main in this long telephoto view from the Boardman Road crossing.
The historic route following its namesake river (which is visible through the trees across River Road) the whole way is exceptionally scenic, but sadly none of the road's own sharply painted green and yellow HRRC units are presently in service and they rely almost entirely on leased GATX locomotives. In charge this day were GP38-2 GMTX 2328 (blt. Feb 1966 as Illinois Central GP40 number 3011) and MP15DC GMTX 229 (blt. Apr. 1982 as SOU 2408).

Nach einigen Jahren im Einsatz für LTE fährt die 193 203 des Wiener Leasing-Unternehmens ELL nun für TXLogistik. Mit dem Wechsel des Mieters wurde auch das seitliche Design geändert. Nun weist die Lok auf den Einsatz der Lokomotivführer während der Corona-Pandemie hin, die mit dafür gesorgt haben, dass auch während des Lockdowns Güter zuverlässig ihre Empfänger erreicht haben. Am 26. August 2020 konnte ich den Vectron auf der Mariaorter Eisenbahnbrücke mit dem KLV-Zug DGS 40670 von Curtici nach Köln Eifeltor dokumentieren.
After several years in service for LTE, the 193 203 of the Viennese leasing company ELL now drives for TXLogistik. With the change of the tenant, the lateral design was also changed. Now the locomotive refers to the engagement of the locomotive drivers during the Corona pandemic, who helped to ensure that goods reliably reached their recipients even during the lockdown. On August 26, 2020 I was able to document the Vectron on the Mariaort railroad bridge with the intermodal train DGS 40670 from Curtici to Cologne Eifeltor.
