Value Girls is a Global Development Alliance jointly funded by USAID and the Nike Foundation to promote the socio-economic status of women by helping them develop alternative sources of income.
On the shores of Lake Victoria, traditional work of catching and processing fish is putting pressure on the lake's fish stocks. The Value Girls project works with young women between the ages of 14 and 24 who live in the fishing communities of the Nyanza and Western provinces of Kenya. The program trains young mothers to pursue alternative livelihoods such as growing nutritious leafy green vegetables or raising poultry, and connects them to the local market to sell their produce. More than 1400 young women stretched along 39 of Kenya's beaches have receive training and agro-inputs.

As part of the U.S. Global Hunger and Food Security Initiative, known as Feed the Future, the USAID Kenya Horticulture Competitiveness project is helping Kenya's small holder farmers grow leafy green vegetables. Leafy green vegetables are nutritious and contain essential micro-nutrients such as vitimin A. The horticulture project works along the entire value chain, linking small holder farmers to the market, and ensuring that a national transportation network delivers vitimin-rich cabbage to all parts of Kenya.

Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth. Calcium deficiency can lead to disorders like osteoporosis (brittle bones). Good sources of calcium include dairy foods and calcium fortified products such as soymilk and breakfast cereals. Calcium is especially important for young children, teenagers and older women.
