The Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca) is a member of the duck, goose, and swan family Anatidae. It is native to Africa south of the Sahara and the Nile Valley.

The Proud Leader
In the calm of an early morning, on water barely moving, one swan stepped forward — quietly, confidently, speaking only with his gaze.
He took the lead, steady and composed, guiding his small white procession as they followed the rhythm of the river.
For a moment, it felt like a gentle ceremony of nature, a ritual revealed only to those who wait long enough for the world to exhale.

Stao je prvi, hrabro i mirno, kao da vodi mali bijeli orkestar koji mu vjerno slijedi svaki val.
Na trenutak je cijeli prizor izgledao kao mala ceremonija prirode, ritual koji se događa samo kad čovjek dovoljno dugo stoji i čeka da se svijet otvori.

A large group of shags (phalacrocorax aristotelis) flying in formation in Norway, with the island of Ringvassøya in the back.
Not the shot or location I wanted, but it works. Q217-06 with CSX ST70AH 8900 rolls down the CSX Philadelphia sub in the early afternoon sun. Here they are going from the main to track one as the close in on Bayview yard in Baltimore, MD.
CSX 8900 is the class leader of the 10 EMD ST70AH locomotives that CSX purchased.
It doesn't happen very often anymore, but just a few years ago you could usually count on 485 to give you a good lashup, with the right leader. No disappointment here with ICE 6216 leading the way past the Milwaukee Road era searchlights.
This was one of those cold February days, but the sun offered up some relief as this mixed fright blasts through Duplainville.

That relocated headlight lets you know the leader on Norfolk Southern's train 290 wasn't always a thoroughbred. NS 3553 was built in 1979 for the Burlington Northern; BNSF sold it as surplus at the turn of the Century. Helm Financial had it in leasing service until 2013 when Norfolk Southern bought it and others to add to their fleet.

As mentioned in an earlier posting, Hubbard Pond and its surroundings are under consideration as the site for a heavy industrial type facility by the Regents of the University of Michigan. If the project goes forward, another piece of the critical natural habitat necessary to sustain these and other vulnerable creatures will be lost forever.
UPDATE: In a 12 March 2016 letter, the President of the University of Michigan indicates the proposed heavy industrial project for this site has been "paused". Plus, all applications for various construction permits are suspended and no construction contracts have been awarded.
While this turn of events appears positive, all it takes is a whim to re-activate the project. Until the final determination is STOP, the possibility of this easily preventable man-made disaster remains. Now is the time to stand-up. Mother Nature needs your voice.

A "good leader" on the eastbound roadrailer headed for Detroit, here at Romulus, Michigan as NS 2558 leads the way - April 23, 2006.
SSR’s P17 leads a single BGKF grain wagon and retired Comeng cars 301M-1001T-302M 303M-1002T-304M with T381 trailing to Bendigo at Clarkefield. The grain wagon was going for repairs, the Comeng sets are to be scrapped. The units were heavily vandalised whilst in storage at North Shore yard since August, with large amounts of graffiti and numerous smashed windows. One of the cars was even set on fire, which prompted security to be hired 24/7 to watch over the trains. 301M is the class leader of the Comeng sets. Built from 1981, 187 three car Comeng sets were built by Commonwealth Engineering. They are now progressively being retired, with the oldest ones going first and the last will be retired around 2026. In the eye of the beholder.
With the Main Channel acting as more or less a runway, NYK Line's Aphrodite Leader has center frame on it's way through San Pedro's Waterfront. The ship has just been turned and burned on a quick tour of the West Coast of the United States. Arriving from Richmond, California earlier in the morning the ship is now sailing back to Japan to start rounding up another shipload of imports.
Off to the right filling in some of the frame is the Ever Future unloading at Everport "TICTF South". As well as part of a Cruise Ship at World Cruise and a very thin profile of the USS Iowa at it's home at Berth 87.

What a treat this morning to see the first signets of the year at Sudbury Water Meadow. This location is one of my local haunts and never fails to deliver photographic opportunities.
After a lengthy trip from Montreal, 321 finally makes it up to track speed, as they pass Trenton, as they’re about to split the intermediate signals.
Nothing gives me more joy than seeing CSX pumpkin units being used in ways they weren't intended to be. George Cheatwood shot this R409 at Akron on August 30th 1999 with the correct leader. JL Sessa collection.
One of CPKC's five brand new ET44AC's painted to honor the United States of America's 250th Anniversary is the leader for CPKC train 252 pulling through Minneville on Main Track 1 of the CPKC Kansas City Sub while crossing the NS diamond at Birmingham. Soon, the train will cross the Missouri River on the Harry S. Truman Drawbridge and enter CPKC's Knoche Yard, it's terminus. 5/22/26.

5411 Leads a manifest east at Price. Unfortunately this was at a time where I was seeing increasingly dirty units, especially the nose. This was at least 5 years before buying the SP.
Heading for the last change of ends of the circuit at Shettleston Loop after reversal at Caldercruix, DB Cargo silver skip 67012 this time leads 67016 on the 3S93 Slateford - Stirling - Slateford squirts, passing adjacent to Manse Road, Bargeddie in a welcome patch of fortunate sun.

Any of these units would have made for a good leader but WC soon chopped and repainted the ex ACR GP7 fleet so I'm grateful for any shots I have of them still in there original appearance. Train AORELD works south around one of the many curves on the former ACR near Heyden with 1505, 5972 and 6560 leading the ore loads on July 30, 1995.
