Bartolomé Island is named after Sir Bartholomew James Sulivan, an English naval lieutenant who participated in Darwin's voyage on the Beagle. The island is located to the east of Santiago Island. The eastern part of the island consists of volcanic cones, while the western part is a peninsula with several rock formations, including Pinnacle Rock, a steep volcanic rock.

Santiago Island has the biggest and longest lava flow, which is located in Sullivan Bay. Geologically speaking, this island is one of the most beautiful and unbelievable formations. The vast basaltic landscape performs smooth and unbroken surfaces with undulations and nods formed by the fluid lava that created the sculpture. It is located on the central west of the archipelago and is formed by two overlapping volcanoes. It is the 4th biggest of the Galapagos archipelago.

Genovesa Island, its sandy coral beach with a great viewpoint of the bay, is one of the Galapagos’ jewels. It is also known as the “Bird Island“ offering the opportunity to enjoy the most representative birds of Galapagos as: Puffball–chicks, white both yellow–crowned and lava herons, Red footed boobies contrasting with the Nazca booby and also the Swallow–tailed gulls, the only nocturnal gulls in the world that will be nesting at the cliff’s edge.

We came across this long crevice while hiking to the Thrihnukagigur volcano when we were in Iceland.

Within the folds and cold lava fields of Snaefellsjokull volcano on the tip of Snaefellsnes peninsula in West Iceland. Even in summer the volcano keeps a glacial ice cover, which unfortunately is also effected by the overall meltdown.

I find this mountain especially beautiful due to the many different minerals which become evident in the multipe colours of the rock.

This is a stitched panorama of several shots of mine from a gorgeous spot in the Icelandic Highlands, here near Fjallbakki. In the foreground are the strange structures and rough textures of an old lava field (volcano HEKLA is nearby) while the background shows gorgeous mountain streams with their glens and snow-covered higher peaks. This excursion was absolutely WONDERFUL

“The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa in southwestern Iceland. The spa is located in a lava field near Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, in a location favourable for geothermal power, and is supplied by water used in the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power station. The Blue Lagoon is ...is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland.”

This was definitely a highlight of last year’s trip to the beautiful country.

This pine seed drifted to a really harsh spot to sprout, but is standing tall and surviving in Oregon's Newberry Volcanic Monument, not far from Lava Butte along the Trail of the Molten Lands. A fascinating region full of captivating geology and history.

Framing this lone pine is Mt. Bachelor, S Sister, Broken Top, Middle Sister. Volcanoes all.
