I published the image on Instagram, where it was one of the most successful posts I ever published. Unfortunately, Instagram suspended my account after I experimented with a follower tracking app. Now the work shall live on here.

Monday was wash day, it used to be quite normal. A weekly schedule was drawn up to ensure that all the manual work, both in the backyard and in the front yard, went smoothly. Perhaps not everyone had washing day on Monday, but there was often a fixed day.

Washing used to be a huge chore. Washing machines did not exist yet, so it came down to pre-soaking, boiling, scrubbing, rinsing and manual wringing.

Drying lines

Sheets, aprons and hoods sometimes received an after-treatment with starch, after which the entire trade could go on the line. Blowing in the wind, it dried well quickly, provided, of course, the weather was sunny and windy.
