I've been meaning to do something like this for a while now. This old abandoned building is in Launceston, Tasmania. A photographer friend of mine affectionately calls it "the bunker". So imagine my surprise when this rocket appeared! ;)

My Hooded Merganser "season" wasn't as lively this last Winter as they have been in the past, but there WERE some moments. You probably know by now if they have the time (not being chased by another hoodie thief) and inclination, they give those crayfish some good shakes to snap off the legs. This shake evidently backfired and launched the crusty meal, right outathe focus plane. Of course the Hoodie made quick on the retrieve.

I usually try to avoid centering the subject of a photo, but I think it works on this one of Ripley taken at lunch today. : ) No way to avoid her at this speed, but I got lots of snowy, happy kisses once I was lying in the snow.

A great grey owl steps off a birch snag to check out some vole activity nearby. I always underestimate how long their wings are, I left room above the owl when framing in the camera, but as you can see, my mental calculation was off.

I really like the large number of large snowflakes coming down. And the bits of snow falling off its head as it launched.

Pictured here is the launch and subsequent explosion of a fireworks rocket & shell during a fireworks show. The image was captured during an annual July 4th event held in upstate NY.

My brother-in-law was part of the pyrotechnics team that was running the show, so we were fortunate to get an up-close and personal view of the launch area.

I found this one while recently looking back through the archives. ;) Not sure why I never got around to posting it, especially as I happened to really like the shot.

Ospreys always seem highly motivated for the Christmas Bird Count on Armand Bayou. This one was ready to go right at sunrise.

This church (on the fortress island of Suomenlinna, near Helsinki) was originally Russian Orthodox, but at a later point it was converted to Lutherian and its onion domes were knocked down, leaving it looking a little bit odd. It reminded me of a rocket on a launch pad.
