"An ambivalent love song to the fading agricultural plains of centuries past, the Last Chance Module Array is a quiet complex for experiencing the subtlety of this site. A meditation on the High Plains region in Eastern Colorado in particular, the piece invites visitors to acknowledge their complex and often overlooked relationship to this place and to the environment, both built and 'natural,' positive and negative. Positioned to align with the horizon and celestial phenomena, it is also an unapologetic celebration of the openness of this land, with the sun rising and setting in the center of the main module structure during the summer and winter solstices." -- M12 Studio
one of the most rarely visited sections of trail in Mount Rainier National Park might be it's most beautiful. As an out and back from Box Canyon it's a 14.6 mile hike with 3130 feet of elevation gain to get to Indian Bar, an oasis of waterfalls and outback campgrounds. The initial climb is steep and in dense forest then a more gradual climb brings you to meadows and eventually this view of Cowlitz Park and it feels like you could just go on and summit the volcano from here (although you are still 4000 feet below it) Sound difficult, don't think you are up for it, well.... turn on this song just before you get out of your vehicle, you'll be so amped you might jog it. Dubbed the greatest rock song you've never heard of, it's from a band I grew up with, give it a listen all the way through... your welcome.
Things change quickly at times. This was just another month when it started, but now it's the very last one where gacha machines will be available to play in Second Life. I'll miss them. I love the surprise in not knowing which of the items in the vendor I'll get, so for me it has been a lot of fun to run around to the different events, playing those machines. I'll adapt though, and I am sure most of SL will. Hopefully there'll be new exciting ways to shop. If not, there's always the old, less exciting way. Better than nothing, right? I mean, at least we'll still be able to shop! :D
But... August is not over yet! Go play the machines while you can! Gacha Garden stays open till August 31st!

Figured I'd start showcasing friends, as I take pics with them. Floki has been a solid friend, and occasional RP buddy for a spell now. A sweetheart, despite what some others may say. (And he asked me for a picture. Who was I to deny him?)

Last Chance is a ghost town situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 36 and State Highway 71 in a sparsely populated area of eastern Colorado. The town was supposedly so named because it was once the only place for travelers to secure fuel and provisions for many miles in any direction.
Today
We're Here are visiting last chance.
I really thought I'd seen the last of the ladybirds in our garden for this year but today I found this one by chance before it flew off. No chance I'll ever see this one again. Even if I found it again I wouldn't ever know if it's the same one.
In the coming days I'll be sharing images from a trek to the now abandoned remnants of a community in the northeastern plains of Colorado called Last Chance.

I captured this image of an abandoned farm house during an early morning sunrise in Last Chance, Colorado.
This is my last go at the wee jetty for a while. I'm back to work tomorrow, a week earlier than planned. I was gettin' greedy though. Looking at this in IR mono, I thought "I wonder what it would look like frozen over? "

90021 Donald Malcolm rounds the Offord Curves (a few miles north of St. Neots), working the first leg of UK Railtours' "The Last Chance". This was 1Z22 06.42 Finsbury Park - Barnetby, which the 90 worked as far as Doncaster Royal Mail Terminal (giving way to 60015 and 66004 topped and tailed). The tour covered several non-passenger lines, including in the Immingham area and the line to Stocksbridge (the former Great Central route northwards from Sheffield). [Pole, 4/6 sections (~5,.4m)]
When the alarm went off this morning, there didn't appear to be any fog - but it was still dark. Checking RTT to see how the sleeper was running revealed it was still at Morpeth (and had been there for three hours), and checking the Weather & Radar app suggested the cloud would be clearing from the north, and coming to this area for 1Z22 would be my best bet. Of course, as it got lighter outside, the fog got thicker (it had been warm the previous day, and the ground was very wet as a result of all the rain during March) - and how cold it had been later in the night was demonstrated by needing to scrape ice off the windscreen.
When I set off from home, I was expecting to watch the train go past (and then set off for the south coast, to have probably a final stab at doing some Southern 313s); surely the fog would be thicker in the Ouse Valley, close to the river? There was indeed fog close to Godmanchester (it was thinner in the town itself), but as I drove south through the Offords it began to thin and there was some very weak sunlight. So, along with a few other people (eventually there were five of us in total, four with poles and one with tall stepladders), I set up anyway and watched the train's progress on OTT Maps; it left Stevenage on time.
As the train got closer, the light levels slowly began to increase, and I was able to drop the ISO from 800 to 400. Even as the train was passing St. Neots, the clarity and brightness were increasing - although when the train passed it was by no means completely clear, and this has had a bit of a tickle.
After this, I didn't set off for the south coast - we all spent too long talking, trying to work out what was going to happen to the sleeper (which was still at Morpeth - over five hours after it had arrived there), and also looking to see if there were any 91s about. So, with a much improved local weather forecast (and a poorer one for Sussex), I decided to stay around and see what developed...
