Kayaking down the May River today was beautiful and amazing. Will not be able visit your streams tonight because I am beat!

The golf links lie so near the mill

That almost every day

The laboring children can look out

And see the men at play.

This is a detail from an Underwood & Underwood stereo view from a set used in schools to teach about occupations. The long text on the back of the card talks about the history of spinning and the introduction of modern technology but there is no mention of the small boys working among the unprotected machines. The little barefoot one holding the spindles in the aisle I find especially poignant.

I am sure the owner of this mill would have said "I built it". But on this labor day please remember all the workers through the years, including these little children, who built this country. I think we have come to devalue labor and the contributions that the working men and women bring to our country. Any full-time job that makes a contribution to our life should pay a living wage.

Today please think of workers but also remember these children who gave their childhood in the mines and mills well into the 20th century. Remember them when a politician today says that child labor laws are unconstitutional and should be abandoned.

All the chicks were back today...

I really liked this guys beard. This is not posed he was standing like this for a long time. When I asked him for this the lady on the bench started to laugh almost uncontrollably. I wish I would have gotten her more in the frame.

A good time was had by all!
